I got my L1 a couple weeks ago, and this video makes me SO EXCITED to begin my coaching journey. I love watching the interaction between coach and athlete when working towards a movement that the athlete has the capability for, but not yet the technique or practice. The moment when the athlete says "Ohh, I see!" when doing a movement, and finally connects the coaching cues to the movement and realizes that THEY CAN is what I look forward to in coaching!!

Firstly, one does not attempt kip pull ups until one can perform strict pull ups. I love the break down here and will share with my coaches. The argument against CF is getting old. I was totally anti CF until I gave it a try. It is DIFFERENT than body building and does not claim to be the same. You train your way and let others train theirs.

Kipping isn't cheating. Its a pullup that uses multiple muscle groups instead of just your back. Kipping will work your back, abs, and its also a cardiovascular workout because you are going fast and for longer. Yes I believe you should still do strict pull ups because that will work out your back the best, but I don't think that a kip pull up can be considered cheating. Its just a different type of workout.
@sebastianschweigert711710 жыл бұрын
It also works your shoulder joint. Each time you do a kipping pull up your shoulder joint is strained. Over time it will slip out of the socket at which point you have achieve transcendent flexibility.

Andy I Face Yes, you are correct if your trying to be a body builder. It's a totally different movement with a totally different purpose. I have done strength training and body building type movements for over half my life and just started Crossfit about a month ago. I was extremely skeptical, like yourself, but I wanted to challenge myself in a different way. I have found it to be the most challenging training I have ever done, and I've done a lot. The movements are about core and explosion(Olympic),very different from what I have done in the past. Technique based with efficiency. The biggest mistake Crossfit made was putting the word Pull Up in the name of the exercise. It's totally different and requires recruitment from all the muscles especially the core. It makes the body builder or layman upset, because they want to see a strict dead hang pull up. Trust me the athletes doing 30-50 reps of the kipping ones can do plenty of strict pull ups. The best thiing about Crossfit is, if you want to do strict pull-ups instead, go ahead. As I stated prior, I was very skeptical myself. The best thing you can do is to go to your local Crossfit gym and try it for a week if you want to be a better athlete. If you just like body building, it would not be for you. Regards, Rich

@RichardSmith-xp5yf10 жыл бұрын

why does everyone hate on crossfit so much? You people do realize that kipping pull ups is just a techinuqe to help people who can't do strict pull ups. It works really well and the more you do it the easier it is to do strict pull ups. So everyone just chill out.
@ChipKempston10 жыл бұрын
That explanation makes no sense. Why do they do kipping pullups in Crossfit competitions? Why does Rich Froning do them in his workouts? It's not for people who can't do strict pullups.
@victorandrew64610 жыл бұрын
Chip Kempston You try doing 50 strict vs 50 kipping pull ups. It's about efficiency of energy not form
@ChipKempston10 жыл бұрын
Victor Andrew Clearly I was addressing a fallacious statement here that kipping "pull ups" are for people who can't do strict pull ups. CLEARLY, that statement was false. On to your point, "it's about efficiency of energy not form" is precisely the problem. I see so much absurdity from Crossfit outlets. Just the other day, one Crossfit source shared an article for why you shouldn't do crunches because it's bad for your back, and then proceeded to share other articles about various horrible form exercises that are way worse for your back (and other joints) than crunches. You guys will certainly keep orthopaedic and physical therapy medical professions occupied as you get older.
@Parrott6510 жыл бұрын
Rockergrl496, I appreciate your support of CrossFit. However, you're comment is inaccurate. Kipping is not taught to those that can't do strict pull-ups. You are required to complete 10 strict pull-ups before you learn how to kip. The point of kipping is to teach efficiency for functional life and for those that compete so they can sustain longer rounds of pull-up reps.
@Parrott6510 жыл бұрын
Chip Kempston So, what you're saying is, because one person from one out of 10,000 CrossFit locations posted something you don't agree with. Therefore, you feel that is the viewpoint of all 10,000 CrossFit boxes and their members who number into the hundreds of thousands?

In a WOD it's eaiser to maintain a certain level of intensity with Kipping pull-ups rather than doing strict pull ups. They are not nearly as demanding on your strength, so you'd be able to do a lot more kipping pull-ups that strict obviously. That said, I believe that strict Pull-ups are better to develop strength in your lats and arms, so once you master the kipping technique I'd only do them in a WOD, and not as strength training. :)

@ryanz736810 жыл бұрын
I actually dislocated my shoulder doing strict pull-ups during a PFT in which it popped out on my 24th a personal record. Doing Crossfit and learning the kip-up actually helped me break a plateau that I had of around 15-17 strict pull-ups that I had for around two years or so. These sorts of negative comments just go to show that people can be cynical about anything. I can gaurantee that most gymansts are stronger and more athletic than nearly everyone who posted a negative comment and this movement mimics that of a gymnast. Go away curmudgeons. It's so much easier to be a dick about everything rather than share in this womens joy as she accomplishes and learns something new and different.
@ChipKempston10 жыл бұрын
Newsflash: if you popped your shoulder, you weren't doing strict pullups correctly. I was a gymnast and you're full of it. Gymnasts don't do kipping as an exercise. Ever. They do kipping to get into position to perform other movements. And guess what? Almost all gymnasts end up with serious joint issues. So, yeah, keep doing jerky, cheating crossfit movements, and keep an orthopaedist on speed dial.
@ryanz736810 жыл бұрын
I had previously dislocated that shoulder already playing hockey when I was a teenager. If you were to watch me do strict pullups you can physically see when the motion and momentum of the exercise actually catches in my shoulder as a result of this. It's something I've always received comments on and something I still haven't been able to correct or control. The afforementioned PFT was a reinjuring of the shoulder close to 10 years after having done it the first time. I love your ability to tell me what happened to me in my life. Get over yourself Chip.
@ChipKempston10 жыл бұрын
Ryan Z I am over myself. I'm also over crossfitters thinking they understand gymnastics. You had a dislocation injury and thought kipping pullups were a good idea? Yeah, OK, that tells us all we need to know. You did repetitive exercises that stretched the ligaments, weakened the joint, and causes muscular imbalances, and you thnk strict pullups are the culprit. And...Momentum = not strict. Your kipping pullups to "break your plateau" clearly caused imbalance and weakness in your shoulder girdle.
@ryanz736810 жыл бұрын
I meant momentum in a physics sense, mass times velocity, in this case in a linear direction and not a rotational one. The imbalance and weakness were always there as it was never corrected properly. I will most likely have to have surgery at some point and more than likely should have already. Please stop thinking you know how I do pullups based on pure speculation. I never once claimed any sort of gymnastics knowledge of any kind and all I merely said was that kip-ups mimic gymnastic like movements which you verified for me by saying, "They do kipping to get into position to perform other movements". My post was really about people that make inferential and speculatory statements and those that are consistently negative or derogatory. I tried to do this by simply providing an example from my own life and past experience and by corallarily relating kip-ups to gymnastics in a response directly related to all the negative comments about this women learning a skill. A skill all gymnasts learn as beginners. I never once said whether it was good or bad for your shoulders. My point was simply that gymnasts are incredibly strong and do these sorts of movements. I know...reading comprehension is tough.

@Heretical_Theology8 жыл бұрын
best kipping instructional video I've seen so far. So much better of a work out than straight pull ups. Love how kipping works out the entire body and allows for a great energy burn. Straight PU's only work a small amount isolated muscles. If that's all you want to do, rock on, but the people saying this is "sh!t" they are only showing their ignorance... Both are excellent work outs with different purposes that work different muscles in different ways. Why people can't understand that is beyond me. And why they can't be happy for a lady getting exercise, whether they agree with the work out routine or not, just flat out makes me angry.
@reconpeon8 жыл бұрын
They say that because it's true. Any muscle group that this "works out" would be more effectively done solo. Do real pull ups for back and biceps and do sit-ups and crunches for abs. This is a poor way to do both of those. this is essentially cardio.
@utm46388 жыл бұрын
id*ot. physically non-active and non-experienced woman in her age doing that kind of exercise is good????? only one showing ignorance is you and the rest of your brainwashed crossfit community. pls do this exercise regularly and then tell me how good your back and shoulders feel.
@TactlessGuy7 жыл бұрын
Are you fucking stupid? Kipping pull-ups are like the equivalent of rapid half-rep deadlifts with incorrect form. Kipping relies on momentum instead of muscle strength and will just result in inflamed joints. Learn how to do a proper pull-up instead of being a wuss. There's a saying that Crossfit teaches you the correct way to workout incorrectly, and this video is a prime example of that.

All you haters should make a trip to one of your local CrossFit boxes to have your egos handed to you by "grandma" and "papa" who are getting a grip on the aspects of functional fitness. But wait.... what could these older folks know? Wisdom comes with age. One other small point-- many of the ridiculous posts below are riddled with spelling and grammatical errors seriously calling into question any credibility the author thought they may have had. Bottomline is while good folks looking to make positive fitness changes in their lives are out putting in the work, cowards will crouch namelessly behind their computer screens making wise cracks or offering unsubstantiated criticism-- all the while illuminating their own stupidity and highlighting the fact they have not even mastered the art of high school spelling--fools!!--with spell check even lol!!!

@reconpeon8 жыл бұрын
Functional fitness is just natural body weight exercises in general. CrossFit is still a less effective and less natural way to do body weight.
@beatsbyelvis68906 жыл бұрын
Jon Steckbeck this is the most autistic comment I’ve ever read... all you’re doing is desperately grasping at straws and sounding like you have an extra chromosome in the process. Most of your fellow crossfit fanboy twinks have god awful spelling and grammar too, and most of these washed up losers are as young as the average gym goer or athlete if not younger. You do realise crossfit is a generally recent fad compared to actual exercises, right? So it appeals more to people in their 20s - 30s. You sound like the most ignorant and socially inept snowflake who had no friends in school but did their best to seem like they felt superior due to their supposed intellect...the same intellect that couldn’t help you figure out how to make friends or exercise properly. I’ll give you a little hint as to what to do from this point since your “superior intellect” hasn’t helped you figure it out yet: eat a bullet.
