Hands On History

Күн бұрын

The Lendbreen mountain pass route between Skjåk and Netoseter was rediscovered by archaeologists in 2011. Artefacts dating as far back as 300 AD have been found in the melting ice patch. From the 12th-13th centuries AD the traffic through the pass declined and knowledge of the route fell into oblivion. In August 2020 Hands On History and friends decided to hike the spectacular and ancient route.

This made me wonder. We often see talk of 'affixing helboots' to the deads feet, but we never see mention of removing of their shoes or why helboots are needed when dead (or what helboots are) but we know they go over shoes. When I saw him affixing his cleats it answered something I've always wondered. Our ancestors were not stupid. And turn shoes are not equipped for walking outside much. Have we overlooked other items that are designed to be affixed over your shoes? I mean, gluing an extra layer of hide to the bottom of your shoes is a logical step if they're thin like almost all turn shoes are, but turnshoes are found in cities where they'd be walking on muddy streets. It stands to reason that affixing an additional layer to ones shoes would be needed if hiking. And if 'helboots' go over shoes, perhaps other boots went over shoes too?

They are called Pattens. Over shoes made of wood. Sometimes made of metal. Elevate the wearer over the muck of the street.

No trees in any direction. Nuts! Reminds me of when we lived in desolate Idaho after living in beautiful Western Oregon. I've heard about the Norse being blamed for deforestation, but am still looking for historical facts outside of Greenland.

I think you will find that its Iceland, which had forests when the first farmers arrived. They are trying to replant forests now.

There's lots of forest here in Norway, but once you get up to a certain altitude they can't grow. This was filmed high up in the mountains, where it'll be too windy and cold for trees to survive. Sadly nowadays, thousands of square kilometres of wilderness disappear each year because of cabin/skiing resorts and infrastructure projects.

Dette er i Breheimen Nasjonalpark. Fjellet Lendbreen ligger på heter Lomseggje, og ligger på grensen mellom Skjåk og Lom kommune :)
