Excellent information on reindeer pelt. I now know why my pelt keeps on losing hair. I bought it from a shop in Levi. Next time I'm in Finland, I will definitely search for a genuine Sami made pelt. Thank you so much.

Do you have a good recommendation of where to buy sun dried pelts? Most places I've looked up only sell tanned pelts or are completely sold out of sun dried pelts.

I loved watching this (ex Viking Age reenactor here, domestic history). Also, in my native Scottish Highlands and Islands, barley (called Bere) was commonly used in very similar ways. Even today the Orkney Islands still make and consume Bere Bannocks, a large griddle or oven baked barley cake, and still grind and sell barley flour for making breads. Interesting too that the Viking travellers and settlers imported many foods to Scotland, including some kinds of livestock. Great video, thanks for uploading and sharing. Brought back some lovely memories.

We NOW have archeological evidence of leather nets or straps holding stuff together. They found one in Norway with receding glaciers that dates to the viking age

The Germanic tribes who follows the old gods, not the same thing as being a viking ,who where only viking when raiding , had access to breads, pies, their favorite being apples.meat pies, stews, beer, mead, cheese , a type of hard apple cider, A type of honey cake are just a few, who where also very herb obsessed using herbs for food and medicines. Not that much different then Christianity that is late iron age who inherited much of their knowledge from their non-christian ancestors. The Germanic staple crops was grains, farm animals, where mostly cows and sheep. The wool was used to make cloth using spinning wheels and looms , most of their other forms of cloth where made from plants. The Germanic tribes also had access to dyes to color their clothes. The Germanic tribe where better clothed then the Romans and this is because Romans lived in a much warmer climate and did not need better cloth to endure the environment. The roman learned much of the better metal working knowledge from the goths, who historians believe learned it from the Swedes. Rations for long voyages and war are of course not normally standard foods of civilization. something you can easily carry and will not spoil as quickly or something people fallback on when running into food shortages, something stored. Some will even dream of returning just for the food. The Germanic tribe foods and ingredient where very much limited by what could be found , farmed and traded for that can be combined and cooked in many ways. When a new herb or food is found and is found to be safe to eat and if this knowledge is shared can result in a new ingredient spreading. Food culture was always changing and you will find some differences between rich, middle and the poor, the rich can effort to buy more from trade. The Germanic tribes have traded as far as china, Russia and certain parts of Europe was more common and even had a colony in Russia . Not that surprising that the goths learned metal working from the swedes. gold is not always made from other nation through raiding. the most common trading is normally near neighbors that also helps keep down the cost, The price of product from distant locations where only affordable by the rich and was not something you can normally trade for in a near by kingdom or nation. owning Land and being rich enough to hire someone else to do all the work was considered a good thing. The Germanic peoples wanted to be rich enough to be lazy. Raiding was of course part of the get rich schemes by some Germanic peoples and king where more then willing to give them a percent for joining their raiding parties ,armies and conquests.
