We leave West Palm and cross over the Gulf Stream to West End Bahamas. The marina is booked for Memorial Day weekend, so we drop a hook and take the dinghy ashore.

I don't usually make a recommendation, but I have one since it worked so well for my old Hatteras. You have repeatedly had issues with fuel contamination. I have a similar vintage boat and it was in Florida in the hot sun and diesel contamination breeding ground. I hired a guy to "fuel polish" all the fuel in the tanks. Paid about $500. He pumped all the fuel from the forward and aft tanks into 55 gal. drums and filtered it and put it back. He found a fair amount of crud in the forward tank and some in the aft tank. Bottom line, we've travelling 2,000 miles up to New England without a fuel contamination issue. Drain the Racors once a season and change the filters. Never stopped due to fuel crud even after being in some nasty sea (tank stirring) conditions.

Have to have the hull cleaned every two weeks in Florida from June forwards especially this year as the waters warmer and all the nutrients being thrown into the waters from golf course and farm field run offs, you can almost see the growth grow in front of your face.

A few things. Regarding the algae. You need to have your tanks “Polished”. When they do that they basically suck right off the bottom of the tank. They filter all the fuel several times and they do it at high flow to get all the sludge mixed up to its drawn out along with the water. The algae lives in the water in your fuel tank. The sludge is actually the algae’s poop. There is several types of fungicides to treat the algae. There is the maintenance doses and there is shock treatment to kill it. The people who polish tanks will know exactly what to advise and do. The bow thruster probably has a “weak link” coupling between the motor and the gearbox. So if you google the brand and model of thruster you’ll probably find what you need to investigate.

Most likely the shear pin in the thruster did its job. Does your motor run but blades dont turn? If so 99% sure it is the $5 shear pin. Depending upon the model you might be able to access this from inside the boat. It is a fairly simple fix. You probably dont need to wait until the trip is over. I know you dont often use the thruster but would be comforting to have it available. Order a few extra pins.

Electric Thruster? Maybe consider getting a clamp-on Ammeter that will do DC. Once it is working again, you can get a baseline current reading. And if it goes up, you would know to check. (Handy piece of test equipment in general.)

For diesel additive I’ve been using this for years and boats and also my own diesel pick up. It works excellent but I think it’s one of the best ones in the market.,, hot shot secret Diesel extreme , it will help clean your injectors out specially, the tips good it’ll help lubricate the high pressure pump and also help boost the fuel and also will help protect metal fuel tanks. It has a special additive in it for that. It has been tested for horsepower wise racing diesels so far up to 3000 hp

Hey Guys! Looks amazing! I'm off to Bimini on Monday... any suggestion on where we can anchor out?
@tryingnottosink91077 ай бұрын
Depends on the winds. If they are from the east, we anchor right on the USA side, near the beach that leads to Browns/Bluewater. We have never anchored with west winds. I suppose we would anchor near the ship wreck. I guess you are no longer heading up the coast to Georgia?
@ShaylaVie6 ай бұрын
@@tryingnottosink9107 As Lynn says, all plans are written in sand at low tide!!! I was headed north, but I really wanted to see Bahamas this year (after all, Bahamas or Bust has been my motto since I bought the boat) so we decided to make a short trip to Bimini before heading north. I read down 6 or 8 comments and didn't find what I was looking for so I guess I'll just ask. Why are you paying someone else to dive, inspect and clean? Bro, if you own a boat you need to do that yourself. I've seen people get stuck where they didn't want to be simply because they never did anything like that before. After I did it the first time ever, my wife started doing it because according to her, I wasn't getting it cleaned like I should. Pfft, what does she know anyway? At least I don't have to do it anymore and we're both 70. She thinks she's a regular Esther Williams now. Fair winds and following seas.
