Very cool bridge!

A static bridge would cost too much money plus the Transporter Bridge is our history I’d love it to stay forever.

Please don’t disrespect us from Hartlepool, Stockton or Middlesbrough this is our heritage this transporter bridge.

Is it listed? It should be.

One penny for a pedestrian - with or without his bicycle - three pennies (proper money, not new pence) for a motor bike, six pennies for a car. Not sure how much for a wagon or lorry. Of course, that was in the fifties and sixties. Half of the Tees Transporter Bridge (Port Clarence side) was in County Durham (the only 'County' in England) and the other side was in North Yorkshire.

There’s a static bridge further up river The Newport Bridge plus there is the A66 flyover to get to Middlesbrough and beyond.

How many cars could it move and how long did the crossing take?
@majorlaff8682 Жыл бұрын
Going back a bit, but I think it was about two minutes. Embarking and disembarking was about the same.

Cars? I think it was three rows of three, so nine. Motor bikes were squeezed in to two or three per row. A wagon may take up a row of its own. Pedestrians and cyclists had a shelter either side to keep out the notoriously bad wind and frequent rain.

At 3:25, three cars depart the inside row, then the middle row, three more, etc.

What a waste of a bridge. What kind of bridge is this?
@ristonvesotsky9535 жыл бұрын
why not just build a normal bridge
@grahamlive5 жыл бұрын
The river needs to be kept open for shipping ( or at least it did when this was built) and this was a much cheaper alternative to building a bridge of the height that would be necessary. Also, the volume of traffic couldn't justify the expense.

what an awful looking town
@Cjbx116 жыл бұрын
How can you tell? The video doesn’t show the town. I know Middlesbrough well and despite all the bad press there are plenty of places worse than Middlesbrough.
@Cultwatch1236 жыл бұрын
Cjbx11 well I've seen other videos of town. It's very run down and chavvy
@Cjbx116 жыл бұрын
Middlesbrough is far from perfect and has problems but as I said there are far worse places I’ve been to. Maybe you should come and have a proper look for yourself sometime.

Cjbx11 I once met someone who had a friend who knew someone who once read a book about someone who might have known someone who lived near there in 1969 and they were overheard when they walked down the road saying it was crap
