Today’s video is part 1 of 2 as we document the process of preparing Delos and us for our Pacific Crossing. Stoke levels were ridiculous on board as the reality of the undertaking ahead of us began to sank in. We arrive to La Paz and immediately dive in to our never ending list of boat jobs like provisioning all the dry goods, trying to get to the bottom of our faulty transmission (this saga will continue into next week’s episode 😂), taking down our beloved dome, and going through and checking everything in our ditch kit to make sure we have everything we need in case of an emergency. And speaking of our ditch kit, we’ve always had a downloadable PDF on our website of everything we keep in our ditch kit, but we’ve gone one step further and we made an Amazon Storefront where you can see everything listed in one page and order straight from there. We’ve also got other categories of things like camera gear that we use, essential tools, our favorite cruising gear, galley gadgets, stuff for kiddos and more. You can check it out at amazon.com/shop/sailingsvdelos
It’s been so great to relive the excitement that we felt before the crossing. The only longer passage we’ve done since having Sierra was from Mexico to Panama, so we had so many emotions running through us as we prepared to spend 3 weeks at sea. We hope you enjoy sharing in the excitement with us as we get closer and closer to departure day!

Hi Delos Crew!! I just wanted to drop a line to say thank you for all you do. You have not only been my escape from all the B.S. in life, but you've also been some inspiration on a project that I planned and finally executed. We just placed our final 405W REC solar panel today! 22,275 watts of home generation!! I engineered all of it and installed most of it myself. A big thanks to my wife and son who got me over the finish line today!! Some days I didn't know how to handle some tasks and became overwhelmed by this project I'd gotten myself into. But, seeing you deal with and overcome problems made me feel less alone and gave me the fortitude to keep going. Thank you for the escape, and the inspiration!! Next stops for me, Grid interconnection, and inspection!

One of the things I really like about this channel, is that they really take preparation and safety seriously, even back in the party years. They understand that being prepared isn't a chore (though of course it can be a lot of work), it's actually an important part of having the sailing experience be enjoyable. Not to mention, when you're prepared for as much as possible, when something DOES hit the fan (and it occasionally does), you don't have to deal with that, PLUS all the other stuff you didn't prepare for. Imagine running out of food/water, or having super sick or injured crew members, AND you find yourself in a terrible storm.

The lever on the side of the transmission connects to a dog , (we called it a dog because it’s got ears on it) that slides back-and-forth between a forward gear set and reverse gear set. I would disconnect the linkage and see if you can shift into forward with the transmission installed and engine running. If it shifts your problem is in the throes of your linkage. As cables in a sleeve where the throws are often reduced.

I think Starlink will still operate over the Pacific, so that might have been an option. I'm sure this video is probably several months behind current, but just thought I'd throw that out there. I know they have a new flat panel dish. I think Sailing Doodles tried it at some point and it worked well. Unsure how much it might cost, but might be worth it for internet connectivity. Hope you all had a safe trip across. Looking forward to experiencing it all through your next videos.

My Volvo Penta transmission originally called for ATF fluid, but at some point a service bulletin changed this to diesel engine oil. A yard mistakenly replaced the oil with ATF during a service, and the transmission soon started to have issues engaging. I pumped the ATF out (in Mexico!) and replaced it with oil. Worked fine after that. The shift cones in the transmission just didn’t work well with ATF.

Interesting about the solar stuff. I hear channels talk about shading but I wasn't clear on the why. It seems strange that everyone does the high voltage option because 30A isn't that much. Call it 40 amps for a bit of headroom and you can do up to a 20 foot run with less than 3% voltage drop using 6awg wire. I've stuffed a lot of 2awg wire through outrageously small spaces in my truck, so 6awg doesn't seem like a big deal. Maybe there are other considerations though, something to think about when I get my own boat! 😁

Brian, I went through 3 gearboxes, it was a hell of a problem, they never lasted. Why? I was to discover there are two kinds of sailboat gearboxes, made for the leisure market that experience a short life span if overuse your motor, say motoring days at a time, they are not built for hard continual motoring use. Most pleasure boats have leisure gearboxes, mine were made in Germany. I can't recall the brand but very common, from your video, I think you may have one of those that looks very much like I ones I had. I discovered that there are also heavy-duty gearboxes not installed normally in sailboats (Leisure Market gearbox), they are designed to withstand long-motoring distances and daily commercial use. Commercial boats install and can run for days at a time without stopping. I ended up installing a twin disk TMC 260 for my 54-hp Perkins engine. I have had it running problem free for14 years. Very much like seeing your family bonding with each adventure you all take and your young crew member coming of age. Sorry, I'm not a beer buyer as I have my own boat to run and am not a KZbinr income fellow. You and your family have my admiration, also I do click likes. I wish you all a safe navigational experience. SV Skoiern IV.

Watching your transmission troubles makes me so glad that I converted from having a diesel to electric auxiliary power back in 2008 on my sailboat. No more squeezing down through the cockpit hatch for me and my aging body. :)

@@haydenwatson7987 Not a problem with EP. Years ago I was anchored up the Hudson River when Super storm Sandy was heading up the coast. I knew I needed to make it back to my homeport before it hit.. The forecast winds however were pretty light (5 knots or less) which meant I would be electro sailing (motor sailing). But, the real nice thing about electric propulsion is that motoring with it for the forty nautical miles was nothing like motoring with a diesel engine. It is very quiet and there is almost no vibration. You can even hear birds squawking over head . It makes for a much more pleasant trip. The small Honda generator ran five and half hours on one gallon of gas before I needed to refuel.

Having attended the USAF survival school, I recommend you include two hand-pump water desalinators, along with a significant amount (3 gallons per person) of fresh water already in jugs. 2 L coke bottles are best, as they're nearly indestructible, can be tied off around the neck with 550 cord, and around their waists, as well. Done right (lay-flat three packs) they won't be sliding around in the life raft, either. Consider a steerable kite, as well, for pulling the raft towards wherever you need. Oh, and a bucket for bailing the raft.

Yeah, I'm thinking of wiring 4 - 6 Vanlife panels in series to make a secondary house electrical system at 48+ Volts in order to run a Starlink in here. And a smaller 12 Volt one so I can charge it with an Isolator while driving from a 12V custom high amp output alternator. But I'm still planning on building my own Lithium Ion batteries out of new 18650's or 21700's with a nice bluetooth VIP BMS to be safe. And eventually a LiFePO4 engine compartment battery with hotplate & 5000+ cycles out of 4 - 6 cells in Series. Starlink requries 48 Volts minumum.

Brian. Whatever you do. Do not take beer cans out of the case. Then place them individually like even near clothing. If they burst. Then the clothes get mouldy. Which = problem after problem upon problem. Keep them all intact in the case away from any central point near the hull causing too much motion on the liquid 🍺 at the pivotal point. So as far away from Any central, pivotal point. Use "sticky tape" [the type used for packing boxes] Tape down remaining beers into a group. And so on . . . . . . . 24 beers down to 17 (tape all 17) then down to 9 (tape them) 💪👊😁

I asked Chat GPT to compose a toast to the crew of Delos and this is what it generated. I think it captures the sentiment of the moment. “Ladies and gentlemen, friends and fellow adventurers, Today, we gather here at the edge of the vast and mighty Pacific Ocean to bid farewell to our dear friends as they embark on an extraordinary voyage to the tropical paradise of French Polynesia. This moment marks the beginning of a remarkable chapter in their lives-a journey that will test their courage, deepen their bonds, and fill their souls with the wonders of the sea. So, let us raise our glasses high, filled with the spirit of the ocean and the warmth of friendship, as we offer a heartfelt toast to our intrepid sailors: May the winds be forever at your back, guiding you on this epic voyage. May the mighty waves beneath your vessel carry you swiftly and gently, embracing you with the rhythm of the sea. May the stars above be your guiding light, illuminating your path through the darkest nights. May you encounter the wonders of the deep blue, marveling at the majestic creatures that call this vast expanse their home. May you witness the breathtaking sunsets painting the horizon in hues of gold and crimson, reminding you of the beauty and splendor that surrounds us. May your days be filled with laughter and camaraderie, as you navigate the challenges that come your way with unwavering determination. May you find solace in the tranquility of the open ocean, allowing its serenity to cleanse your spirits and rejuvenate your souls. And when you finally reach the shores of French Polynesia, may you be greeted with open arms by the warm embrace of its people, the vibrant culture, and the pristine beauty of its landscapes. May this voyage become a cherished memory, a tale to be shared with future generations, and a testament to the indomitable spirit of exploration. To our dear friends, as you set sail towards the horizon, we raise our glasses in admiration and wish you fair winds, following seas, and a voyage filled with endless wonder. Loved the ditch kit. I have one that's specifically designed for southeast Alaska. Because where I sail is a 'temperate rain forest' with bears on the islands of S.E. Alaska, I've tailored it for our conditions. Here in our fjords, shore is never more than about 5 miles away and because the water is cold (about 45 degrees), we'd likely be going to shore, so my ditch bag has: * those SOS food bars like the one's you guys have (and like you, I ate them after the first round expired). I have enough for 4 people for 5 days * flares *binoculars, so I can see if it's a ship in the distance or a log, before I shoot off a flare * waterproof fire starter, to provide warmth and dryness. Did I mention it's a temperate rain forest?! * limb saws, to cut some wood for fire *water filtration bottles. There are streams all over the place here, so that covers water * a large tarp, parachute cord, and zip-up space blankets. Tarp goes up to provide shelter from the wind and rain * VHF handheld radio and a DeLorme inReach * two flashlights with extra batteries * a nice Leatherman multi-tool * bear spray. We have both black and brown bear here. If we go to shore, after setting up camp, we'll start a 'bear watch' where someone stays up and watches for bears while others sleep, then rotate... I'm sure I'm missing something but you can see that my ditch bag (which BTW is a military grade 'dry bag' with a painter on it) is stocked w/ things useful for my location. As for your tranny, I'm wondering if the issue is related to the clutch? Or the shift fork that engages either the forward or reverse gear. Hope you guys get that figured out!

Getting close. Love La Paz. Spent about a year there outfitting and some refitting. Figured that I would much rather do it there than the states. So we know the boat would make it from SFO to La Paz. And it did. So spent a very enjoyable year working on the boat and in joying “paradise” and sailing the nearby islands and harbors. It worked out well.

Probably a slipping cone in the transmission. You can strip it down and hand lap it and then put it back together. Search youtube for how to do it.

Wonderful vid again, the clutch is to slow as it need some more oil press to move. Probably the oil press to make a shift is too low due to a small internal leak.

The correct approach to handle the transition issue is to remove it, drain all the fluid into a measuring cup and record exactly how much fluid came out. Take it so the stern and bring a screwdriver, 2 meters heavy gauge chain, chain clip quick link and a cell phone. If you have about the same lubricant as you originally put into it you attach the quick link to the mounting hole. Then take your cell phone and turn on the theme from The Godfather as you push it overboard. You get extra points for using a NY accent as you deny any knowledge of the ‘incident.’

On your transmission, if everything is okay, then move to the forward and reverse switch.

you are brave setting out without knowing if your transmission is good. "Its so beautiful is feels like its not allowed". such a great line. Those are the places that you look for in life. I'm dealing with some difficult health issues and your channel always makes my heart feel good. Watching Sierra on the pony run into the step reminds me of her woo hoo on the boat on her bike. It also kind of makes me laugh because its like her bicycle experience is limited to 3 feet. that is way too funny and precious at the same time. Cheers Y"all. Thanks for taking me along on your. journey.

Brian, have you disassembled the shift lever on the dash to make certain it is functioning correctly? I know this is pretty basic stuff but, when moving the shift lever into forward, at the end of the cable, is the cable moving to engage the transmission into the forward position. Please check the same idea when moving the shift lever, on the dash, into reverse. Once upon at time, many, many, many years ago, I found my computer wasn't turning on when I pushed the power button. So I called my tech savvy good friend to come over and help me troubleshoot. The first thing he checked was to make certain the tower was plugged into the power outlet. Hmm, very, very, RED FACE, it wasn't plugged in! That's why I suggested that you check some of the most basic functions of the drive system. Sometimes we can't see the roots of the trees because we are used to looking at the entire forest for so long. Good luck Delos. May your transmission always keep you moving in the direction you want to go! May the forward FORCE be with you. 😂😅🤣

Ok....your new transmission. It goes into gear but there's long delays. Alright...delays like that comes from the transmission pressures not reaching like 300-450psi operating pressures. Ok...soo...ur engine is idling when you put it into gear....and nothing. Means the engine RPM is to low to generate the proper pressures. Which ACTUALLY means...the little pumps and dual disc's are not generating the proper pressures at idle speed. Since you just installed the transmission. Your cable length could wrong. So leave the cables off and shift it by hand. If it goes in and out of gear quickly.your cables need to be adjusted. Or...if you have an external oil cooler. .try to flush the transmission for some junk that might have contaminated the oil in the transmission. AND...if you have a transmission oil cooler....I put one on my 62' ketch. As...There could be corrosion in there. BUT....more than likely its in the reduction pumping valves in the transmission. Or in warped plates/duscs. All of Which would require a transmission tear down. BUT... Since it's a new transmission....like your doing....swap it out from the company. With modern transmissions....they're VERY reliable if they are kept clean. Soo clearly....its got a valving internal issue inside of it!! Not your job Man....swap it out. Jeffery....⚘️

Good video ! Re: Transmission not going into gear right away is usually a Low Fluid Level / Low Fluid Pressure Problem. Im guessing the internal Pump Failed. Possibly from a Piece of Debris from the Last Transmission failure. Common problem if u don’t flush out the Cooling Lines Before installing a New Transmission. Also might be advisable to install an External oil filter in the Cooling line somewhere to catch any debris before it enters the New Transmission. Also a Transmission temperature Guage & Fluid Line Pressure guage would be a Good idea too.

There are no cooling lines. The transmission is self contained. This transmission is simply forward, neutral and reverse. It is a very simple design.
