Crossley BTH Magneto. Ow dear, we have a problem.

Not a shim Adam, it is a reed valve for the crank breather system, it helps to maintain a partial vacuum in the crankcase as the piston rises, it helps to stop oil weeps through the crank mains which have non existent seals. Timing marks are dots/lines on the cam gear and the mag drive gear.

My thoughts too, also will the points be opening up at the same time with the different mag. Magnetos that I have timed on old motorcycles are timed by the position of the gear on a taper

The reason there are several sets of holes in the mag mount bracket is so the Crossley can use different makes of magneto, the mag on there is more than likely the original but it is scrap any way not due to the bearings but the rust on the com is too deep so will destroy the fiber cam follower on the points double quick. What about fresh lubrication for the mag bearings which is through the holes underneath with those screw plugs.

As this is a potential replacement for Rachel's engine, I think you should go the whole 9 yards with it. It would be a lovely token to give back to her. She bought an engine to experience your world, maybe she could do bits of this engine with you, as her health allows.

I can't help thinking that it's been mag issues that have resulted in it being a low hour engine. Maybe the first mag failed, infant mortality, then other second hand ones failed too.

How come most of the screws nuts and bolts you take off seem to come off so easy,most of what I get my hands on have corners rubbed off screws with slots buggered up.

The mags you’re trying out are ML Lister magneto’s im pretty sure i spotted a BTH mag when you got the collection of magnetos from Kent. The Crossley should be fitted with a BTH or Hills bro’s magneto.

Isn't there a carbon brush under those face cam type points? It ain't gonna play well with grease.

Dont paint, check the mag gear it looks like it is wobbly the key may need more work. I don't think grease is good on the points area as i think there is a carbon brush.
