CROSSPLANE R1 - JUST THE NOISE

Here's a short, fun ride on 2012 Yamaha R1. A mic was attached to the passenger pegs on the right side of the bike to record sound. No helmet audio
Mic used to record was a Rode VideoMicro. Had a deadcat over it to try and minimize wind noise. I recorded on a separate device from the GoPro

It's not the pipe it's the cross plane crank. A flat plane will never sound like this no matter the pipe.

If the headers are the right length then a cross plan can sound like a flat plane (for example the C7 corvette owned by the youtuber 'Bladed Angel') and a flat plane can sound like a cross plane (for example the Mustang gt350)

That's because it technically is a crossplane V8 cut in half. Over-simplified of course, but you get what I mean. Lol. Imagine a V8 made from this design in something small like an Arial Atom or a Slingshot or something of that nature. Automotive heaven. 🤤

Holy shit that sounds sooo throaty and mean. I ride an R6 and love the high pitched inline 4 scream but you can't go wrong with the R1 crossplane. Still undecided if I'm going to get an R1 or a S1000rr

Definitely R1 man. I rode my friends S1000RR for a few days and it was awesome but there is something about the cross plane R1 that’s amazing. If I were u, definitely go with the R1 and than move on to bmw after.

Tbh s1000rr is the better choice. Imo one of the most beautiful bikes ever created. Plus the engine howl is nothing to gawk at and I say it competes with the R1 crossplane on nicest sounding bike. Plus the fact that it has 205 hp on a somewhat comfortable chassis (R1s are horribly uncomfortable) you can honestly ride all day

@@patq1924 Not necessarily. I found S1kRR's design to be polarizing, either hate it or love it, there's no between. But, on other hand, there's hardly anyone who doesn't like R1's design. As per my personal experience(one of my friend owns a '16 R1 and '12 S1000RR), R1 has way more street presence than BMW.

I’ve had the same R1 for about 8-9 years (2011 model). My riding buddy has had about five bikes in that time. Mine has ALWAYS gotten the attention. Children and animals flee from it and hide behind stuff. It’s truly an event. Never ridden the bmw, I’m sure it’ll whoop on the R1. But the sound of the R1 is truly surreal. It’s very obviously angry. Other than a new R1, there still isn’t a bike I’d rather have. I heard Rossi’s M1 bellowing at a race and learned the R1 sounded similar and that’s all it took for me. My R6 was instantly replaced.

This is factory exhaust except for the slip on, it has a Toce quad pipe. Newer video on the channel shows the sound with a Graves Y-pipe and the Toce

Crossplane engines are bred for torque, brute sound and acceleration. Flatplane engines are bred for speed and high pitch sound.

I like the sound lower to 7000-8000 rpm. It becomes too high-pitched for me if the rpm gets higher. What I like about this bike is the V8-ish sound at low rpm. At higher rpm it sounds like generic motorcycle engine, at least for me.

@@YassineOnTwoWheels makes it more unpredictable for me. It tries to cut power so you have to give it more. Better to turn off completely or on lowest setting imo. This R1 has old traction control that only uses wheel speed sensor, no IMU or true wheelie control

Because the pros don't outweigh the cons of utilizing a crossplane inline 4 as opposed to a conventional flatplane inline 4. There's little reason to do so other than sound, thus why only Yamaha has really bothered.

Yeah, I use water wetter in conjunction with normal coolant blend rated for use in aluminum blocks here in New Mexico, it normally keeps it a bit cooler by improving the heat transfer. Just don't run it alone with water
