I worked credited crew on this. She was very sweet, no entourage at the hip. Easier shoot than most. Was grateful for the job, as I was new in Los Angeles. Still friends with people I met there. A Good time! Over my head at the time, but if you think about it, the dark esoteric subtext is Crossroads (selling your soul for fame - AKA the Legend of Mississippi Robert Johnson), and three witches lead by curiously named Lucy (Lucifer) sacrifice a human life and suddenly have a record contract, thus leaving their loved ones in the southern fried dust, in exchange for bright new Hollytree Hollywood Stardust. The film was called "What Are Friends For" during filming, which sounds more like the name of a "Sopranos" episode. Better title change. I also love the related musically themed, albeit different, 1986 "Crossroads" with Cobra Kai's Ralph Maccio. Tamara Davis directed and she does not get much credit and was ahead of her time, despite making very memorable movies (Billy Madison, Half Baked). Cool woman. Dan Aykroyd is a legend, no matter your age you would find the 1980 film "The Blues Brothers" amazing - seek it out, a one of a kind that will positively leave an impression. Unlike most celebrities, I sympathize with Britney. But as of 2022, it doesn't look great as she will be handled forever. All superstars are. Fame isn't "free".

Super late to the party, but I wanted to share this story. Growing up, my family and I were next-door neighbors to Britney Spears' aunt and uncle. My family moved a few miles away after a couple years, but we stayed in touch; they were nice people. All of us lived in the middle of nowhere in Montana, and Britney would come to see her aunt and uncle once in a blue moon just to get away from the insanity of it all. Britney would dress in sweatpants and shades and go to some department store and just walk around, enjoying anonymity for once in her life. No one recognized her because even if they did, they'd shrug it off because there's NO WAY Britney Spears would be in our little hick town in the middle of nowhere. Around the time this movie was made, my mom was a Big Sister (from the organization) to this little girl who was a HUGE Britney Spears fan. My mom learned the little girl's birthday was coming up and so my mom asked Britney's aunt, "Hey, next time Britney's in town, could you-" "Say no more," she said. "I'll hook you up." Literally the day before the girl's birthday, my mom received a framed picture of Britney Spears with a personalized and signed message to that little girl. When my mom presented the picture to the girl, her brain MELTED DOWN; she froze, unable to move or react. She just stared in disbelief at the picture for a solid minute. No, I've never met Britney Spears, but I'm sure we'd have a lot to talk about if I ever did.

If you haven't heard, it was recently revealed a 19-year-old Britney Spears was coerced into getting a secret at-home abortion by her father Jamie as well as the father of her child (then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake). That year she starred in a film "Crossroads" in which her character searches for a mother who abandoned her, her friend who is engaged discovers her fiance is cheating on her, and her friend who is pregnant loses her baby. I can't IMAGINE the pain of being pressured to get an abortion and then STAR in a movie which the main plotline centers around being rejected by a mother, losing a child, and losing the (then) love of your life. She was living all of these things simultaneously.

Her father wasn’t involved in the ab--in her book, she says JT was against having the baby so she basically did it to please him which is so sad to me. It has affected her whole life since then because she regretted it. It was an at-home thing, she took some kind of pills that forced her body to reject the baby. Sounds horrifying by how she described in her book how everything happened. After that, she and JT were never as close again. Heartbreaking that she went against what she wanted more than anything because she was scared to lose him, then they wind up breaking up anyway. 😢

Yeah unlike my *lifelong best friend and neighbor* who believed me for three years (i told her, hysterical, literally crying and shaking, the very next day after it happened)..... then she “fell in love with him” while i was away at school for one semester.... (edit: when i came home, her bday was a week later, which was the first time i saw them together and realized they were legit dating) and when i confronted her, like, “you hanging out with him was one thing but are you guys legit like... a couple?! He assaulted me!”.... she called me a liar and said it didnt happen like that and i lied bc i was ashamed for hooking up with him (bc he had also dated another friend of mine years before... we all went to HS together... funny thing? This made me say fuck it and tell that first friend what happened cause it happened WHILE she was dating him and i was terrified she wouldnt believe me, exactly like what OP said. She legit blocked him right in front of me and never spoke to him again... hugged me tightly & said she was so sorry for being so into him that I’d ever think she’d believe him over me.... this is the one i wasnt as close with lol). Like my “bff” really doubled down as if she had always thought I was a liar and as if HE was the one she was friends with all along... She was downright nasty too. I mean, she said some really mean things. In reality, me and him were the same age and she was a year younger.. she legit MET him while i was away at college. But she knew who he was without question, very well. Deadass I made up with her and stayed friends with her too bc i was that pathetic and didnt want to lose my “best friend.” Then I aged out of my twenties and realized you dont need friends, especially not ones like that. And to be clear, I’m a millennial, so this wasnt like... in 1975. This was like eight years ago.

@@speeeee35 I am so sorry that happened to you. Didn’t help that assault was involved, so that guilt factor was also at play. Ugh. As I’m in my late 20’s I can’t agree more that you just don’t need crap friends. Life is too damn short haha

She really is a decent actress. Considering she was like 19 recording this movie, she could have actually had a decent run transitioning into acting if people hadn’t already boxed her into an image they would never take seriously. This was released a few months pre extremely publicized breakup of Justney, a year pre party girl Britney, and 6 years pre breakdown and conservatorship so I don’t think crossroads was an intentional warning. That said, it’s actually shocking just how much of Britney’s music hinted at feeling controlled and judged and just wanting to experience life before the worst parts even happened at a time when we were SURE that Britney had little to no input regarding the outcome of her work. It fucks me up because there were people picking songs like Overprotected, Lucky, Not A Girl Not Yet A Woman _FOR BRITNEY_ , saying yes to this script _FOR BRITNEY_ which seems to say those managers noticed that even then she was being controlled (whether by her agency or parents) and it was going to ruin her life one day but the furthest they went with it was selection while the public never caught on

It's terrible that Britney's entire life has been manufactured by people profiting off of her and they never seemed to have her best interests in mind. I was in highschool when her and Christina Aguilera came out, as well as the desiged rivalry between the two pop stars. In reality the two were previously good friends from their time on the Wicked Mouse club. With the constant fabricated tabloid smears and feuds between the two pop stars, it led to real hostility and resentment towards one another. I can only imagine the two young women, going through similar experiences with their newfound fame, their lives being in the spotlight and the pressure it must of been. If they were allowed to continue their friendship, they could of been a real source of support and confidante for one another. That could of been something that really changed the outcome of Britney's entire life.

not to mention, britney has an amazing voice that was forced to be babyish for sex appeal, and christina can sing really beautiful soft notes, but roughing her up was a good opposite to britney's sexy child thing, so she's always sang so many growling notes. it sucks. so glad we are (super slowly) abolishing female competitiveness induced by male ideas. i know i still struggle with stupid, ingrained ideas that i have to actively combat. it's a journey to being a better person.

you do realize they don't hate each other in actuality? Christina has said multiple times there was NO real competition between them. that was strictly made up by tabloids. I'm sure their agents were eating it up too and encouraging it.

The only time that I noticed a slight shift in her confidence when doing things like that was her most recent appearance on Jimmy Fallon, where they do the “Ew” segment in the basement, where I noticed that Britney, due to all of the absolute fuckery that she has endured from her father, management, and everyone else in between, seemed somewhat unsure or less confident in her improve, acting, etc. On another note, I have to thank you for provoking a shit ton of goofy and borderline obnoxious, but in the best way possible, laughs out of me, like the ones Britney made during the video, every time you edited yourself into the scenes, lol.
