Relays, gate openers, door strikes - integrating these into your infrastructure gives you some powerful functionality and security - but how do they work exactly? This video gives you a simple example of how to wire up a relay to an electronic door strike from a non-electrician.

NO and NC is referring to the circuit, not the lock. NO strikes remain locked until their circuit is closed. NC is more common for magnetic locks, since their circuit is constantly powered (closed) in order to keep the electromagnet engaged.

Great video on home automation Chris! Basic concepts of relays, it took me back to my college years when I build a lot of that stuff in the lab. Are you going to do more videos like this for home automation? Enjoy your vacation!, you deserved Cheers to that! 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺

Could you please please please do one for the Axis A8004-VE? I am struggling with it and would prefer to use the 12v output it supplies rather than having to plug anything in as the whole point of getting the A8004-VE is to take advantage of PoE

Is there a certain brand you are using in your video example - for the magnetic door strike ?

Through the PoE/Network Cable, You setup the SIP Extension, and thru a GUI you tell it what extension to ring when the button is pressed, it calls that extension, allowing you to talk to the device. When you press 9 or what ever DTMF tone it will unlock the door.

Yup - as Brett said - it's just a SIP extension in FreePBX.

You could just use the 350mA that Axis 8105-E relay output is capable of to also power the strike lock rather than plugging strike lock to a dedicated power supply. The length from Axis to strike lock will also be short specially if both are connected to same door so very low voltage drop if any

Title and content don't really match, was expecting a more technical video ala BigClive or EEVBlog. Still it was interesting to see an implementation although it doesn't seem very secure since it could be overridden with a few 9V batteries and access to the wires.

If someone unscrews my intercom wont the be able to connect the wires and unlock my door? I dont understand how to physically protect my intercom from an attacker.

You wouldn't need to splice any cable. Just run your positive from the PSU to the relay common and have it return via the NC to the lock.

It would appear that you have a Tungsten ring on. I didn't read all of the other comments because I don't have time but I was working with low voltage stuff and some 12 volt batteries and I highly do not recommend having a Tungsten or any metal conducting ring on your finger when you are working with live electricity in any circumstance. Trust me when I say this

DC Voltage is always Positive / Negative. AC is Line and Neutral / Common / Ground.
@srokalapy

AC its not always Line and neutral. Line and neutral only happens when you have electrical service which is AC power. But if you have 24 v AC for HVAC system then we have T and C. Or if you have 240V in american system you have phase 1 and phase 2.

Think hard about NC vs NO... you'd hate to be locked in an NC room during a fire... you'd hate to be being attacked by a movie trope style killer, locking yourself inside for safety and realizing he just cut the power ... Sometimes fire code doesn't give you a legal option to choose NC ... that's why you can switch some of them.
