Fully loaded for travel with my wife in the back seat. Saddle bags, top case and a backpack on top of the case.
I have obviously started recording this ride halfway through the ascent. Reason? Simply because the traffic on the way up here was horrendous. They allow full size buses and supplies trucks to use this narrow, twisty road with hairpins!!
3 months ago, I did the Stelvio Pass and now I was able to properly compare these two, seemingly similar, but also very different, roads.
Kotor hairpins are very similar to those of Stelvio Pass. But the sections of the road between the hairpins also have more turns and twists than those of the Stelvio. Another important factor to consider is the lush vegetation in Kotor. There’s no much vegetation at those high altitudes on Stelvio thus making it easier to see around the corner and to prepare yourself for what’s coming ahead of you. Here at Kotor serpentines, you have to deal with uncertainty of what’s around the corner and be ready to react instantly. From that perspective, in my opinion it is more challenging than Stelvio.
The road itself is pure pleasure and the surrounding nature and landscapes of the Boka Bay are breathtaking. Steep Dinaric mountains, Adriatic sea in the background. There’s exactly 15 km from the main road under the mountain to the village of Njegusi where the entrance to the Lovcen mountain national park is. There’s a tolled, mountain road in the national park and that will be our next ride in the upcoming video! Stay tuned!
