Crown Prince Frederik: Who is Denmark’s Soon-To-Be King?

Queen Margrethe II surprised Danes when she announced her abdication on New Year’s Eve.
She revealed that her son, Crown Prince Frederik, will become king when she steps down on January 14th.
The prince will not have a televised formal Coronation and instead Frederik's accession will be announced from Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen on the day.

​​@@whawwhat I am Danish and I've never heard that rumour before it was announced and Frederik is going to be king in January. So even if such a rumor does it exist there is not enough evidence and foundations that it actually happened for it to be a news story in Denmark. And I can also inform you that back in 2018 there were a big celebration held in honor of Frederiks 50th birthday where Crown Princess Mary gave with a very moving, sweet and quite funny speech to her husband and if I remember correctly he actually started to get teary-eyed when she told him how much she loved him and what a great father he was. There are still times where you catch him looking with so much love at his wife. So, please don't come with accusations that has little to no base to look down upon the crown prince couple. They are doing a very good job. They are in charity and they are trying to focus and create events that encourage people to move more. Because it in the has happened in the past in the royal family of Britain does not mean that it will happen in our royal family.

Whatever the motive for HMTQ Margarite, to step down and give the throne to her son, it's her choice. Adding fuel to a fire is not good. We don't need more fuel (suspicion) on the soon to be new King of Denmark. No marriage is perfect. There are bound to be flaws along the way. But it's up to the couple to communicate and talk about issues that deals with them alone, not the busy bodies outside of their circle.

That is how Constitutional Democracy functions in Denmark! When he travels abroad as Head of State ( like he did on behalf of Queen Margrethe II to India in 2023 ) he was accompanied by a delegation of CEO's of Danish companies ( 38, I looked that up!). And also by a few Members of Government, and those politicians were the ones having the POLITICAL conversations in India. Not Frederik, he visited Taj Mahal, and President Murmu of India, who is also not the REAL leader of India. MODI, the Prime Minister has the political power in India.

She is the longest reigning in Denmark, but how long did Elisabeth II rule England, before she passed? Though England, and Great Britain, isn't in the European Union anymore, they still are geogrphically a European nation.

Elizabeth II reigned (not ruled) for 70 years over the UK and 15 other countries (virtually none of which are in Europe). Most countries belong to more than one international organisation- the most common being the UN. In addition the UK is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations- which consists of all but 3 of her former colonies) and until recently was a member of the EU. The UK (and all the other realms over which Charles is king) are democracies. This is why we say reigned not ruled. The effective rulers are the prime minister and Cabinet. However the PM and Cabinet (as is Charles) are subject to Parliament, which is elected. The monarch has to sign bills of Parliament into law. The monarch acts only on the advice of the PM, or the relevant Cabinet minister. The PM and all members of the Cabinet must be elected members of Parliament. If Parliament votes against the policies of the PM and Cabinet, then they are meant to resign, Parliament is then dissolved and there has to be a general election. Also not all European countries are members of the EU. This because the EU is a political organisation not simply a geographical one. For example Norway is not and has never been a member

@@EF5Winds They are fashioned with the same structure as the UK if bicameral in the sense there is an upper and lower house. I have to say I was considering the parliaments of the realms in Oceania when I said they are all elected. In Oceania the members of Parliament are elected - but a few are unicameral houses. I have just looked at the parliaments of the Americas. It appears that in many of the bicameral houses the upper house is appointed by the MPs of the lower house (both the Government and Opposition) thus are indirectly elected. As I understand it the Senate members have to be reappointed after each election. However I did not realise the Canadian Senate is appointed in the same way as the House of Lords is until they are 75. So Canada and the UK are the outliers here with long term appointed members of the upper house. In Australia and Jamaica the Senate is fully elected. Nevertheless I think the point you were trying to make is that because the UK has essentially non elected long term members of the upper house it is not democratic. While I can understand that point of view, I note that despite this arrangement Canada is rated as a full democracy according to the Democracy Index, and I am pretty sure the UK is considered one also. Not only that but the top 2 most democratic countries on the Democracy Index are monarchies - Norway and New Zealand. No - she is queen consort also. The term queen consort is a position, not a title as such. The wife of a king is a queen consort, whereas a woman who rules or reigns in her own right is a queen regnant. Queen Margrethe II is a queen regnant, as was Queen Elizabeth II of the UK. They have the title through their birth. Queen Camilla and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother are queen consorts. Mary will be a queen consort as she only has the title through a marriage.

I am particularly not too pleased with this announcement because I read a years ago when the Danish monarch pledged to remain on the throne until she falls off. In 2013 Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and King Albert of Belgium abdicated and in June 2014 Juan Carlos of Spain abdicated. Abdications will only set a weak position for European monarchies in the future. This was why I had immense respect for her majesty Queen Elizabeth II, had she gotten to 100 she WON'T ABDICATE. Instead she might have made Charles the Regent. That's how it's supposed to be. What has happened to regency in these monarchies? With regards from Lagos, Nigeria 🇳🇬.
