Just ordered one last week and installed it on the weekend. I use it for my Steam games because my P5 already holds my OS and apps. Also, my 3 TB BarraCuda HDD caused slow loading times and sometimes even annoying shader compilation/texture streaming stutter, which is why I only use it for my lossless music collection and documents from now on. The MX500 instantly removed the HDD bottleneck, holds quite a few games and doesn't run hot at all. I definitely recommend it as a gaming drive 👍

The issue with a direct comparison for TBW is that it's tricky to test them. In addition, a lot of people barely use their SSDs to make the TBW rating relevant.

1TB cost LESS compared to my old 120GB Samsung 850 Evo :p Amazing how ssd prices are going down. I'll grab this drive soon. Also the tiny pcb size is due to the "3D" NAND layer. A regular non"3D" takes up more space and is inherently slower.

Hello, is it still worth getting 1TB version for gaming? Are there any updates on failing?
@Animal_lives_matter
@Animal_lives_matter 11 ай бұрын
I have researched all the competing brands at similar price point, and I find similar reports of failures on those too, and some worse reports like 970 EVO and WD Blue SA510. Both of those received firmware updates that claim to have resolved their issues. Crucial have also claimed to fix some "corner case" problem in their latest firmware M3CR046. I keep coming back to the MX500 even though I want to get something else, there just doesn't seem to be a better option in the price bracket. If money was no object I'd get the Seagate IronWolf NAS SSD. I don't know, I think all low-mid tier SSDs are poor in 2023. Even WD Red SSDs have reports of premature failures in Amazon reviews. All of the cheaper ones are slow, DRAMless and use cheaper and cheaper designs to drive the price down while quality and performance suffers. I get the feeling something went wrong with SSDs in the last couple of years. I don't know what it could be, maybe Covid related somehow. Maybe it's just a small amount of users having issues while the majority who had no problems don't feel the need to write reviews saying they had no issue. On the other hand the large amount of positive Amazon reviews for 970 EVO are all just short term reviews. Sort by lowest rating tells a different story, people reporting back after 1 year, 2 years. And then you have some reports from people claiming to have bought large batches of MX500 for schools and businesses with 30% failure rate. But maybe this was because they were running old bugged firmware which corrupted the data. So the drive is not really dead but just corrupted data, so perhaps it could be used again with new firmware and reinstalling everything? I'm writing this on a 2013 SanDisk SDSSDXP240G (TLC). According to CrystalDiskInfo: 20,004hrs usage, 94% health, 14TBW, 20TBR, 0 uncorrectable errors, 0 reassigned blocks. It has never done anything weird and the OS has never crashed (Windows 7).

@@TechLegend-com and what about when u buy 4TB, how much less it has to be?
@TechLegend-com
@TechLegend-com Жыл бұрын
@@kath4rsis513 For a 4TB Drive, you'll expect to have 3.73 TB of space available. This is not an issue. In general terms, the capacity of an SSD or HDD is measured in decimal bytes, but your computer uses binary bytes. Thus, your computer converts the number of bytes into gigabytes by dividing by 1024 all the way up through the scale, not by dividing by 1,000. And this is why you get less space than advertised.

@@TechLegend-com Well, it arrived with latest firmware M3CR046 pre-installed, which Crucial Storage Executive describes as an "optional update which repairs a hang condition occurring under corner-case workloads". On reddit some server admins with RAID arrays of MX500s were saying it fixed their issue. I'm having trouble imagining how a certain workload could make it hang - the controller should be able to deal with any pattern of requests to read or write data. This is basic low level stuff that should be bulletproof from day 1 firmware. The previous MX500 I bought in Feb 23 had M3CR045 from factory, which I updated to M3CR046 as a precaution. Have barely used it, only as a backup drive to reimage OS drive to. So no data from me on that one. The previous MX500 I bought before that was from 2021 and had M3CR023 from factory, and that one cannot be updated to M3CR046 because it uses a different controller for which M3CR023 is the latest version. I am using this one as OS drive and will continue to do so as I read some comments that M3CR023 is for drives that use the older controller which is rumored to be more reliable. Looking at comments it seems the problematic ones seem to be around the batch that was shipping with M3CR043. This was coincidentally around the time Samsung started having issues with their EVOs. Could it be related somehow? Weird temporal correlation. Nobody seems to really know what's going on. Some comments are saying to monitor the S.M.A.R.T F7 and F8 properties to check for unusually high write amplification factor (WAF) which if present would mean the NAND chips will fail quickly due to "drive health" falling rapidly, which some users have experienced (even on M3CR023). The WAF can be calculated by doing (F7+F8)/F7. On my OS drive I have 2.2 WAF, which is within normal range but not great. I just copied 1TB onto my new 2TB MX500 and it has 1.1 WAF after that procedure.

@@TechLegend-com Nope. Quote: SSDs are getting more expensive, and we’re just getting started. The prices of NAND chips that are used in SSDs are expected to jump by 50% over the coming months, according to TrendForce, which will translate into higher prices for storage. Even at the start of 2024, we’re already seeing some of those price increases in effect.
@TheRealJohnHooper
@TheRealJohnHooper 4 ай бұрын
@@TechLegend-com Before shaking your first at greed, though, it’s important to establish some context. The prices of SSDs dropped continually over last year, mostly driven by consistent price drops on NAND flash. The turnaround in pricing is to ensure NAND suppliers like Samsung, SK Group, and Western Digital can turn a profit. Even with the first wave of price increases, SSD prices are still far lower than they were a couple of years ago. Still, if you’re planning on picking up a new SSD for your PC, it’s a good idea to get one soon. We’re already seeing an upward trend in prices, and multiple sources over the past few months indicate major NAND flash manufacturers are going to continue to push prices up. They may never climb to the heights we saw at the end of 2022, but it’s still best to pick up an SSD sooner than later
