sour crudes include a lot of asphaltenes and heavy waxes that cannot be ignited by compression. Sweet crudes have a much more white product ( naphtha, gasoline, paraffins, etc. ) that makes it possible to be ignited by compression. That's a good experiment though

@@ProjectFarm You're welcome :) - I have heard a myth in a barber shop from the keeper tells that he was a trucker in the age of the first Gulf War in Iraq (early 1990's). The sweet crude oil that is extruded in Kirkuk,Iraq was so liquid and thin which is suitable to use with old Ford Cargo 2520 and the old Ford D1210 without any treatments. I was quite skeptical about it even I have learned that the Kirkuk Oil has quite high (38) API Gravity. The transparency and viscosity was like a strong tea. You have *confirmed* that myth with this experiment :) Btw, that's one of the reasons why there are long-standing conflicts, though :) Keep up with the good work 👍

Isn't heavy crude the stuff with long-chain waxes and large asphaltenes? From what I've read, the difference between small and large molecules is between light vs heavy crude, rather than sweet vs sour crude.
@AW-nz5st4 жыл бұрын
This is completely wrong. Sweet vs Sour refers to the presence of sulfur in the crude. Sweet has less than 0.5% sulfur, Sour crude has more than 0.5% sulfur. It has absolutely nothing to do with the length of the hydrocarbon chains in the oil.

Neither would work well, to be sure. The diesel doesn't like the sour because it probably has too many "light ends" which are very volatile and ignite before they should in a diesel. Those light ends are why the gasoline engine works at all. So you'd make it harder on the gas engine and the diesel would still knock.

This will run. This is what a diesel engine is running on when it is "running away" which is a situation ususally caused by failed turbo seals where the engine is burning on its own oil. the only ways to stop a runway diesel engine is to either starve it of oxygen, or by releasing compression (Jake Brake or when it drops all its vavles from overrevving way past redline)
@MrTheHillfolk6 жыл бұрын
GT20Modding I used waste oil in the work truck, you could blindfold me and I’d feel the difference. I used to use it so much I never had any to return to the shop 🤣 But for my personal car I use new motor oil and other cetane improvers in a 30% amount in my fuel, it really wakes it up as smaller diesels want 50-55 cetane. the swill at the pumps is like 40. Bruce Roger Morgan here in the states there are kits that allow you to put a tank in the back of truck or trunk where veggie oil or just old used oil of any kind can be put, one thing most of the tanks have heaters in them to heat the oils up before being pumped to the engine where once it starts running on that you can then turn off the diesel line and according to them it will run!!! ???

Yeah it works great. The key to successful running on used veggie oil is ensuring the same viscosity as diesel fuel. You can achieve this with heat, or by thinning it out with a solvent. I run an old Nissan SD30 diesel on used veggie oil from Macdonald’s, thinned out with around 10% jet fuel (kerosene). From what I’ve read you’ll need an older design Diesel engine with a pre combustion chamber.

Have you heard of bunker oil? It's a heavy oil with a high sulfur content that is closer in consistency to tar than oil, it's used in steam locomotives and large naval ships. Apparently it needs to be pre heated to have a low enough viscosity to flow into a regular internal combustion engine. I have been unable to source where to buy it or if it's even sold outside of commercial applications. If you could get your hands on some I'm sure it would be interesting to see if it runs in a normal diesel engine or has any practical use as a crankcase lubricant.

I've been working with running various diesel engines off used oil for years now and it's not too hard if you know the tricks. In typical operation its best to use E85 as the fuel thinner. About 15 - 35% depending on the oil thickness and type and working temperature will run most common mechanical fuel injection type engines. The reason for the E85 Vs using gasoline is that gasoline depending on the seasonal or even local blend and the engine it's being used in can cause adverse hard knocking issues. With the high ethanol content E85 that problem is eliminated and when blended properly the engine will sound and operate just like it does on normal diesel fuel. Beyond that good filtering is a must. I don't recommend anything courser than 10 micron due to the very tight clearances that many injector pumps have depending on their designs.

This is helpful. Thank you!

but wouldn't it still clog the pentiles in the injectors? < i think i got that wrong lol
@tcmtech75156 жыл бұрын
"Pentile" Do you mean 'pintle' or is there some type of trademarked injector name I don't know about? All of the older designs of pintle injectors I have played with have no issues with running reasonable well filtered heavy oils. The biggest issues I have had are with the small engine type cam driven single piston type injection pumps that rely on nothing but tight tolerances between the plunger/piston and cylinder wall for a seal and rotation of the plunger/piston to determine the injection volume and timing. It doesn't take much to jamb up those types of injector pumps and stop them from working properly so good filtration is a must. On the larger inline and rotary pumps commonly used on bigger diesel engines I have not found much issues with it.

I've got a few tests in mind. * Diesels are supposedly able to run on their own lube oil quite happily. * If a diesel engine has run away, will a shot from a fire extinguisher down the throat stop the engine without doing irrepairable damage to it? * How much gasoline will the engine tolerate before it refuses to run properly, if at all?

@philtripe6 жыл бұрын
yes, yes and i'd think they explode rather than refuse to run...gasoline is much more volatile
@TestECull6 жыл бұрын
@stickloaf actually, no, they can't ignite it at all. I'm a diesel mechanic and I've seen plenty of vehicles come into the shop full of gasoline that just don't run. It can and often does totally assfuck the injection system, but it does it because the gasoline can't lubricate anything rather than gasoline's volatility exploding anything. What I don't know is what the threshhold is where there's enough gasoline in the diesel to make it actually die, and that's what I want to see put to test here. Feed it steadily thicker ratios of diesel-and-gasoline until it just won't run anymore.
@TestECull6 жыл бұрын
@Martyn Watson I say they will run on their own lube oil quite happily because they have zero qualms about burning it in place of diesel fuel. The engine is happy to burn it and will chug-a-lug the stuff down until something gives way. Problem is, if one's drinking its own lube oil, it's not saveable. BY the time it runs out of 'fuel' it will have already totally dickered every wear surface inside the engine. If you're lucky they just sieze or clatter to a halt, but often, they undergo rapid unplanned disassembly...

Diesels will run on about anything. My old Mitsubishi work truck, I was almost out of fuel in the sticks. So I took the 5 gallon pail of waste oil and dumped it in and drove home. After that I put almost all my waste oil in that truck. The boss liked the “improved fuel mileage”🤣 My summer car is a diesel and with this new swill they call diesel , I run 70% fuel and 30% “other”.... Other being a mix of cetane boost, new 15-40 engine oil, some 2 stroke oil and a little MMO. Oh and some atf if I have it. I ask people if they have any new oil in their garage they never used and give em a buck or 2 for it. It really cuts down on the cetane knock and adds a little power. Since I don’t run it in the cold weather I don’t have to worry about the cold, but the old work truck just cranked a little longer when it was cold out.

From what I have heard about so called vegetable(polyunsaturated) oils the vast majority were originally a waste product used as lubricants and fuel oils and you most certainly didn’t want to eat them. Until someone washed them and added chemicals to make them stable all they could be used for was in machinery. Now they are too expensive to use in the only place they should be. All the hype about vegetable oils being good for you and animal fats being bad is 100% marketing all the real independent studies show that with the exceptions of olive oils and palm oils the healthiest place for vegetable oils is in the fuel tank of a diesel.

@anomamos90956 жыл бұрын
WineScrounger . Actually there is no such thing as vegetable oil unless it is called that because it is derived from vegetation in general. Palm coconut and olive oils are closest to being vegetable oils then there are the nut oils other than peanut which is a legume then there are the seed oils such as Linseed sunflower safflower grape rapeseed castor and many more then there are the husk oils that are taken from what is essentially a waste product, I believe these are rice corn and cotton and probably many more. With the exception of palm coconut and olive and possibly cold pressed grape and rapeseed none of the so-called vegetable oils should be consumed by anything but a Diesel engine or a turbine or maybe an oil heater.

Glad you didn't get injured. Sour crude has H2S in large concentrations. Sweet has it as well but not like sour. Both likely has the middle distillate that a diesel engine would like. There would be different concentrations depending upon the type/grade.

You can start a diesel using a variety of different aerosols. I once got my friends van restarted using a can of deodorant, when he ran it out of diesel and wouldn't self bleed. Anything flammable should get a diesel going.

Outside of the crude oil, I used to have a 94 Ford F350 a few years ago with the naturally aspirated 7.3 international motor. I poured everything I had into that fuel tank, including used motor oil from oil changes, brake fluid, mixed fluids with coolant in it, you name it.... and it ran better on that than it did on today's straight diesel. I didn't try running it straight on that concoction, but mixed it 50/50 with pump diesel and filtered it. No problems at all. I almost regret getting rid of that old truck, but it would get stuck in wet grass so it was time to go.

Disgusting. Such little liquid that even if you were stranded it would do nothing but make the coolant absolutely repulsive when it came time to fix it. If the rad is low enough to overheat an engine you'll need at least a 1/2 gallon of liquid. Maybe a van full of drunk people and no beer to use for coolant. Haha.

Westport GX engines run on 95% methane (CNG / LNG) and 5% diesel. This is because methane will not ignite under compression in a diesel engine. All methane based diesel engines like the Cummins ISL9G require a spark plug. Westport GX engines use a modified Cummins ISX engine with an injector that only sprays 5% of the normal amount of fuel and the methane is allowed in as the primary fuel. The 5% diesel works like the spark plug to get the methane to ignite. So lets see if we can replicate that with a highly restricted diesel fuel supply and letting it inhale a controlled amount of natural gas.

As a mechanic, I had to upvote for the use of wd-40 to help start a diesel. Its so much easier on the diesel engine, more so than normal ethers or starting fluilds (made for gasoline only). Though I would probably be misting wd40 in the intake rather than streaming (most of the time), somewhat lessens the chance of hydro-lock damage. Good video on crude.

curious as of weather a forced induction diesel would have as a reaction to this as well. Makes me wonder also how jp-8 would work in this engine. We have a set of generators when sent to a certain area were'n rated for jp-8 but that was what was available for fuel so we ran them on it. Then kept going putting on well over 5000hrs on this fuel also with the old oil from services being dumped into the fuel tanks to hopefully hep provide some lubrication for the fuel system. Wasn't an idea situation, but they worked and they were going to be thrown away afterwards. These were atlas copco qas45 units they use the kubota v3600-T engines.

Yes! Have really been looking forward to the diesel tests! This reminds me of the stories of the old diesel deuce and a half’s and how they would run on just about anything (kerosene, jet fuel, peanut oil, etc) What did the exhaust smell like when running the crude? Lol love the smell of diesel so this has me very curious Also just seen a old Motorweek video the other day of an old Oldsmobile GM made that ran on coal dust (was a very interesting video that I highly suggest checking out! I believe it was from 1982) They had used a turbine engine, but I think if you could test coal dust as a fuel (possibly mixed with other fuels or mixed into oil to get it to work in a carburetor or diesel injector, unless you can figure out a way to get it into the engine in a powder state? Ha even just this is interesting! If anyone can figure this out it’s you!) that would be INCREDIBLY interesting to see if it could work in a piston engine!!! Anyways, this was a great video! Take care! 😊
