I overheard a mother and daughter looking for ducks. the mother said we need it look earlier in the day. So when they were facing away I put a duck on a table for the girl to find. She was so excited when she found the duck.

KZbinr THE HONEST GUIDE actually cut the locks off and invited tourists to help. Then they donated the scrap metal to help make a new bell for one of the famous churches. I think he actually took donations from tourists for the privilege of cutting off locks. Hamburg should do the same😊

I am a grumpy old man and I think the duck thing is dumb. But after I saw the look on some kids faces when they found one, it made me think differently. Now, I just ignore them when I see them. At least they are small and they don't make the ship sink. LOL
@agentaemme7 ай бұрын
Back in 2019, a nice hostess showed my kids where an older couple had just hidden two ducks. For them it was completely magical. They now help with hiding the ducks for other kids to find. I normally save mine to "hide" in plain sight for the smaller ones to find after getting a nod from their parents that it's okay. On our last cruise we met a large gaggle of teenagers that were collecting them as a competition. Their uncle apparently usually hides ducks, but was paying whichever of his relatives gave him the most ducks on this cruise $100. As long as they're not hidden inappropriately (the miniature ducks where small kiddos can reach, in potted plants, in bathrooms, outside, etc.) I'm okay with them being in a larger quantity. We only found 12 on our 7 day cruise (probably because of the teenage gaggle), but the hunt gave our kids something productive they could do that didn't disturb anyone else (i.e.: cartwheels in the atrium, or seeing how loud they can sing) when splash academy is closed. I also bring duck pens, keychains, and stickers for the splash academy crew and for any crew members that we encounter that mention they love finding the ducks.

I have seen dedicated "lock sculptures" places like Curacao where people are encouraged/allowed to do the love locks and it isn't a problem for bridges, fences or gates. As for the cruise ducks ... meh ... I used to be into it, but don't do it anymore. I recently found ducks 4 times on a cruise and I just re-hid them. The people who REALLY seem to be thrilled to find them are crew members. I have no problem with something that gives a little entertainment to people who are working 12-hour days on 8-month contracts and rarely have a day off the ship.

Morgan made a good point though. One or two are cute and unique, but 500 is too much. Maybe something biodegradable made from paper would be better. A little origami duck or swan would be lovely to find. Nothing plastic. Certainly nothing advertising a business. That is actually forbidden on cruise ships. Maybe spend a couple of bucks on Wish and get some hand fans or back scratchers. Hide them. Something people might actually use. 😊

I saw on another vlog that Disney is saying a big fat NO to ducks. They are serious about it. Donald and Daisy are the only ducks allowed on Disney cruises. I also saw that John Heald of Carnival said you could get in trouble if you attempt to solicit on any of their ships throughout all their brands by putting your card on a duck. Lifetime banning was even mentioned as promoting any business on their ships is strictly forbidden. Apparently there are serious consequences for breaking the no soliciting rule. Wish they'd enforce all their rules like that.

Perhaps the cruise line can have a policy where the crew collects ducks as they come across them on the last day of the cruise and donate to charity periodically. It is extra work on the crew but I would say that if folks know they’re going to be “disposed” of at cruise end they may not be as inclined to hide as many. Just a thought. I just don’t think that the years/decades that the materials take to breakdown in landfill are outweighed by the 2 minutes of happiness at finding one. To me, they just seem to be novelty objects that are destined for the trash from the moment of their manufacture. Sure, the journey to the landfill might be delayed for a bit whilst they spend time on a shelf or in a bathroom but eventually…

I agree with you and in fact believe that almost anything, however cute and innocuous it may be when only done occasionally, can easily become obnoxious or even dangerous when done to excess. I would hope that if people realized that their silly symbolic gesture in the case of the locks was creating genuine damage and potential danger to the structural integrity of their preferred locations, they would stop doing this of their own accord. In the case of the duck trend, I am concerned about the enormous amount of plastic that will at some point become nothing but trash when this trend loses its charm and all those plastic duckies end up in landfill or floating in the ocean. As you said clearly and repeatedly, it is not so much the trends themselves that are problematic but the volume and breadth of their popularity. Be warned however, that this support of your position is coming from a grumpy old lady.

OK,as far as locks I think that’s inconsiderate because all of the problems they cause. I do not recall whether or not you’ve been to the Grand Canyon or not but this is a problem there as well. The lovers then toss the keys into the canyon. Doesn’t sound too bad except for the condors like shiny things so they get a hold of them and sometimes swallow them. Not a good situation. The ducks, I don’t look for them. The cruise lines have start banning them because if they’re not found then they have to dispose of them. This just causes prices to increase!

9:42 Grumpy old man or shall I say Grinch. I don't have an opinion on the locks, but do on the ducks. First of all the girl hid 50, get your facts straight. If you find a duck on any ship, you are lucky. They are VERY hard to find. Those 3 you saw must have just been hidden. I've been on several cruises and I hide a TON of ducks, but I only find a couple. She started it to bring "Joy" to others. If you don't like it, don't participate. No one is forcing you.

I don’t think you need to do architecture based not allowing love locks. I say let people do them it’s good for tourism, good for economy, and when it gets out of control remove them all and let the tourists start over. Good job security for city workers. Even let it be know on the webs/news they are being removed which would maybe make people revisit the city to put a new one on.
