Another huge outbreak on a cruise ship the second on over 100 passengers this year. A man jumped from a cruise ship and luckily was rescued but may now face charges by police. cruise ship delayed getting back to port and more cruise news.

You may wash your hands but you probably caught it because most people do not wash their hands and they touch everything that you have to touch. That has been a pet peeve of mine most of my life. I just wish people would wash their hands!

Exactly this. I also wash my hands constantly while onboard and after hand washing at the buffet washing station, I still carry and use hand sanitizer at the table after filling my plate and before unwrapping my utensils and eating, because as you correctly mentioned it's using serving spoons/tongs that people who don't wash their hands just used that can have someone contract Noro.

Wash wash wash, and use a napkin to pick up tongs if going to the buffet(which I avoid🤢)and I have wipes that I use once I have touched a menu, etc before I stare eating…my sister in law mocked me, but I really don’t give a 💩😑

If not mistaken when you mentioned you became ill, you had ordered room service, you may have had food poisoning, totally same symptoms.

People can be pretty gross. You never know where those hands and fingers have been. I was standing in line at a store, and a guy was looking at a mirror on a shelf by the cash register and was popping pimples on his face..... what did he touch next? !!!

Anything can happen when the ship is out on the voyage or returning. I book a flight home after 12 noon and if I'm driving, I will stay another day at the hotel that I stayed at before I got on the ship. Anticipate the unexpected when cruising. I just will not rush to a cruise and rush back from a cruise. NOTHING is a big issue when I'm cruising. Enjoy and Embrace the experience and the journey.

Wow…WASH YOUR HANDS! I feel lucky having just got off a very short 4 night on Celebrity… no floods, not sick, everything on time…although we too had to divert to Miami from Key West on our way to Nassau for a medical emergency. It was a sea day so no harm…hoping that person fared okay!

Don Glad you are feeling better. I'm so glad they arrested the man that jumped off the ship. They think it's cute but it's not. I hope they get along time in jail or send his butt back where he came from. Glad you are home safe and sound.

For Voyager of the Seas. Carnival Dream also got into same storm. Captain ordered everyone on the ship to go to their cabins. I was on the Breeze at the time; and we got into the same storm hours earlier. It was no where as bad as those 2 ships had. We where happy went through it when we did.

We had an evacuation from our cruise on Princess years ago, between Vancouver on the way to Juneau. 2am, someone was banging on our door really hard. Opened up the door to see a crew member saying there was an emergency, to dress warmly, grab your life jacket, and meet in the atrium. That'll wake you up really quick. We went to the atrium, lots of people there, staff running around but not telling anyone anything. Around 430am we were allowed to go back to our cabins. The following day we got a plate of chocolate dipped strawberries and an explanation from the captain. A crew member, on his 1st day, had appendicitis and needed immediate surgery. The seas were very rough, and they needed a helicopter transport off the ship with a basket. Coast guard ship was along side to coordinate. They evacuated the aft 1/4 of the ship, all cabins as a precaution due to the helicopter transfer. It was very exciting, lol. The crew member had his surgery and was fine.

We were on Cunard Queen Elizabeth for a 24 night cruise, there was a cough going around called the Cunard Cough. I witnessed this lady well into her 70’s everywhere on that ship, she would horribly cough into her hand and immediately start rubbing the chair backs next to her, the handles on the ice cream machine, in the theatre. I called her Typhoid Mary and after seeing her behavior repeatedly I talked to the purser, he said there was nothing we can do. We wound up getting sick and spent most of a week in our stateroom which is the responsible thing to do. When we got back to the public area, there she was deliberately contaminating more chairs, I confronted her and told her I saw what she was doing and that she should know better, cough into your forearm not your hand and use a napkin, you are making others sick, I am watching you! She just said leave me alone and go away, at least I called her out but there are many more just like her onboard with such inexcusable behavior, just have to double down on handwashing and the sanitizer because of these idiots!🤬

Unfortunately there are many people who do not care for the sake of others. Call me freak but every time I cruise I always carry my sanitizing wipes to clean where I will be, washing my hands all the time. No one else is going to take care of me means I have to do it. Taken many cruise and because of my hygiene practice I do not get sick.

@@alasanasilvia5605I totally agree with you. I’m a longtime Cruiser and I’ve never even gotten the sniffles because I keep my Costco antiseptic wipes on me at all times while traveling. Basic hygiene goes a long way but some people just don’t get it, apparently 😢

Don, just returned from the NCL Sun on a 16 day sailing from Buenos Aires to Cape Horn then to Chile. We noticed that there was no cleaning of the rails and other parts of the ship. The only washy-washy was when you entered the buffet. They had hand sanitizers at different points but they were empty. The sheets in our cabin were never changed during the16 days. Seems like NCL is neglecting the older ships and their passengers. Maybe you could do a video on cruise ship sensitization. BTW, we came back with Covid.

By continually dwelling on ‘bad news,’ you are making cruising sound like a risky adventure - a meltdown just waiting to happen. We’ve been on more than 40 cruises and only had a problem once. That’d be the time I forgot my passport at home.

Exactly. We have been on 45 cruises and only been sick once when we picked up the norovirus in a restaurant in Rome. In that case, it was a 24 hour bug and by the time we got on board, we were no longer sick.

Since the pandemic I just don't rely on anything inagural with a new cruise ship, not even the first sailing from the port. I book a cruise on the ship once it's been in service for a while. Work out the bugs before I cruise on that ship please and thank you. I don't care about being the first to be on the ship just the cruise that I book when I actually go.

It’s our 30th wedding anniversary and my husband surprised me with a 21 day cruise on the sun princess . We have never been out of the country ! I am not sure of all I need to do by August. We do have our passports.

We are scheduled for.the 18th on the Sun. The cruise goes out of Rome so the ship just needs to get there from the ship yard, it doesnt.need to go to Barcelona.

Didn't the cruise line bother to tell passengers why their cruise was cancelled the day before they were set to go on the cruise? How does that go "Hello, just called to let you know that we hope you haven't left the house yet...we've cancelled your cruise!"

You mentioned weight issues on your checked bags on a different post, but be aware there are weight restrictions on carry-on bags also unless you have a medical device in the bag like a cpap machine.

So does food poisoning have those symptoms.. Many times, I see food not at proper temperatures on the buffet and who knows how long it sits in the galley at the wrong temperatures. No one checks these ships regularly for this like a health inspector on land. This would not be a wash your hands situation.

On the Pride Jan 20-28, they took regular temps on the lido deck. Not sure about the MDR meals. But some hot soups were not hot. I watch for all of it. My internship in college was with the MKE Health Dept in summer 1977 and 1978. I learned all the ins and out of food service inspection. My BS is in Food Science and I did work in Food Industry for 6 years and then got certification to teach HS Science. I have been carrying around frag. Free wet ones or baby wipes for over 30 years. Malic acid is the disinfectant. I have allergic to the hand sanitizers plus they are harsh on your skin, cracking the skin open defeats the purpose of it and can cause serious bacterial infections. Anyway, my deal is determining what organism is causing large food and or water outbreaks . We did lots of simulations in college. Norovirus wasn’t even in our list.

@@ljrothman2584 I was thinking Noro isn’t the only thing either. Salmonella was my first thought. For what it is worth, after I saw them testing foods I thought were too cold I tasted it, I was t impressed. I did see them remove a tray though, but the is a while back! While I’ve had a minimal food handlers certificate my experience is more based on living in foreign countries where I had learned if it isn’t blistering hot and I’ve seen it just come off the fire, I’m not eating it! Bugs that others tolerate aren’t necessarily okay for the rest of us. After being in country about 6-8 months I learned there were some things I could eat less than hot, most curries! I bought a probe to take on my next cruise but forgot it. Of course, I’d have to just test on my plate, but still.

lets be honest it is not the cruise line that says the ship is not ready... it's the dock that is building it! I mean, you can only blame the line for so much sort of same goes for the build-quality and delays in a hotel (which I, as a former part time guide am more familiar with) the tour-operator can only do so much, if they cannot enforce their time line or quality (due to lack of builders) that's a problem....

Hi Don You only made passing comment of cruise ship damage on a carnival vessel in Gulf of Mexico during a storm. When similar event occurred in Bay of Biscay to English cruise boat you were all over it asking why was in that storm etc etc. Very different review. Cheers keith

It's a "Heeling" incident. And yes, tilting until your balcony door is 30 feet above the waves is a real thing. We were on the Brilliance of the Seas in 2010 when during 80 mph hurricane force winds, and waves that would swallow a yacht caused us to have such an experience just out of Alexandria. It was horrifying. It shook the captain to his core, it was evident in his voice. We got our money back. All of it. Everything except for excursions we already took. Just know that if you're in a bad storm, and the ship can't maintain the minimum nine knots needed to make the stabilizers functional, it can happen. You can toss port to starboard very deeply and it can go on for several minutes. Athiests will pray. (To imaginary ghosts of course, but they will pray nonetheless.)

what percent were those 100 passengers? today the ships are gigantic, so this may not be as large a number as it's sounds... also, if that's a new stomach bug it is important for those disinfecting to be aware it may be needing a different set cleaner-liquids for better effectiveness, if that's so, I am glad they are not pretending it's just another Noro-virus. as the prevention methods may have to be updated a little... and well, the fact they are keeping there mind open can only be a positive thing.
