Jason, I do NOT eat at any of the restaurants at any of the Ports of Calls. I have always been leery of getting food, ice, and restaurant tap water for fear of getting sick. I wait until I get back on the Cruise ship to eat. If I'm at a reliable Resort or a beach excursion that has been vetted by the Cruise Line then I will eat the food.

Yes - We pretty much always eat at port restaurants. It's a great way to sample local cuisine and to try new food items we wouldn't otherwise find at home.

I really do think the cruise line should refund the $$- at least half. The cruise line told them flying in the same day wouldn’t be an issue. He believed the professional and what the professional told him. Should he have bought insurance, yes. But again, he was assured by the cruise line it was “all good”… don’t tell me it’s all gonna be ok unless you KNOW it’s all gonna be ok.

I agree. I’m sure there’s a contract protecting the cruise line. However, I’m a seasoned lawyer and I’d argue that this is a breach of fiduciary duty. The cruise line chose the flight and refused to change it without charging them more money and then assured them it would be fine. I’d argue that the cruise line had a duty to book a flight for them that ensured that they would be able to reasonably make the cruise and that it was reasonable for the family to rely upon the advice of the cruise line agent who was advising them. I’d also argue that people rely on booking agents and travel agents to give them professional advice. I’d argue that either they ought to have been able to rely upon the advice given by the cruise line and that in refusing to change the flight without an extra charge the cruise line was in fact extorting money from them. That is “we are booking you on this flight which we know might not get you to the ship on time and if you don’t give us extra money we aren’t going to fix the issue and put you on a flight which will ensure that you get on the ship “. I think if they were to sue a civil jury would find for them and force the cruise line to reimburse at least half the costs, but it’s also reasonable to foresee that a corporation doing this will anger the jury and the jury might just order NCL to refund them in full and award aggravated damages on top of that for their bad attitude. Honestly if I were a judge hearing this case I’d force the cruise line to reimburse them and award aggravated damages and damages for the emotional harm caused to this family with having their vacation ruined. I don’t think it’s likely that even the clauses in their contract will protect NCL because it’s a one sided contract which is not fairly negotiated by two parties with equal bargaining power. I’ve been in practice for over 20 years and the refusal to change the flight without the family paying out money to NCL would not sit well with most judges or juries. It’s a clear breach of fiduciary duty. This was a three bedroom suite so NCL would be wise to offer them vouchers for three ocean view state rooms and airline vouchers as a settlement and get them to sign waivers to they can’t sue. They have their own legal team of course, but honestly I can’t think of any judge I’ve ever been in front of who would not award the two families this happened to more than the cost of the missed cruise. I think that the cruise lines had better pony up and settle this before those families get lawyers.

I just booked a cruise through a very big travel agency and they booked me traveling cross country with a very tight change part way. The agent implied that I had nothing to worry about because if anything were to make me late the cruise company would get us to the first port. I am now very worried about this and cannot change flights to go the day before.

As a former travel agent, I slightly disagree. They are 100 % responsible , in my opinion, because the cruise line offered them a service that they should have recognized as a potentially inadequate service. Next, for what reason were they denied the land portion of their vacation? Too many mistakes were made by the cruise line, and they should be held accountable.

It is a LOT of money to the majority of people but apparently they can afford to loose that money ;) Personally, I get insurance for any trip that go on for any major vacation. We had a cruise planned with Royal Caribbean and had a death in the family. We put money down on it and purchased the insurance. BUT.... when we tried to cancel due to our circumstances, they told us that the insurance wasn't in effect yet because the cruise wasn't paid in full. Seems that the "Art of Customer Service" is just a part of History now.... Never again...

I actually do make it a point to get something any time i get off the ship. Maybe not a full meal, but at least a local snack and a drink or three. Modern sanitation and water treatments have made "Montezuma's Revenge" pretty much a thing for the history books.

B here. I can’t believe they didn’t have travel insurance especially with spending that much money. We always get it. There have been too many medical disasters that would cost a fortune for medical evacuation. You never know what could happen.

Yes, we love to talk to the locals (guides) and find out where they eat - and treat them if possible. Nitya of De Kros Jewelry in St Maarten is fantastic for showing us an out of the way place that provides local fair for a great price. Virgil in St. Kitts does the same. We made friends and check up on them when we get home and go out again!

A - We ate in Skagway because we did a half day excursion and didn’t pack a snack. We had plenty of time after our excursion/before all aboard and wanted to shop in town, so we didn’t go back to the ship to eat. This was our only cruise (so far).

Regarding cruise insurance, I recently heard about a man who had heart issues on a cruise ship & was airlifted to a hospital. The insurance did not cover transportation back to the ship a couple of days later when the couple wanted to get back on the cruise. I have always gotten back on the cruise ship to eat lunch while at port so I don’t have to take a chance of not liking the food or drinking the water while in Mexico. While back on the ship you can also swap uncomfortable shoes, drop off purchases or freshen up.

A- but5 it depends on the port. We have friends that were on Aruba and the husband got food poisoning from a hotdog purchased at a beach vendor and actually had to be hospitalized due to the severity of the food poisoning. Luckily Carnivals doctor recognized the serious situation and they had the passenger taken off by ambulance to the local hospital where he spend 3 days. Important to note is that they had cruise insurance and passports.

re-travel insurance : while researching for my own coverage I discovered that many/most insurances have a pretty low maximum payout if you need it. A 10 day cruise is costing me nearly 5,000 Can. The standard seemingly well priced all inclusive travel insurance cost abou $300 but maxed out at $2500 if I cancelled for any reason. I had to pay another $150 for a "top up" policy to cover the total cost of cruise, hotel and flights if I cancelled. So please CHECK exactly how much coverage you actually get on the advertised rates that are so enticing. They may in fact be almost useless.

Those people with their Alaskan cruise screwup seem to have had "more dollars than sense." Of course they should have travel insurance, that's a given, but even without travel insurance, what were they thinking??? They still could have flown to the first port the ship stopped at and got on there. Sure, that would have been expensive but it would be a LOT cheaper than losing $58K by missing the entire cruise.

Jason, This was a great video. I always get travel insurance. The mother should of checked if it was okay to jump ship. I usually don’t eat in cruise port except in both Puerto Rico and St Thomas. Great places to eat there. The beach is nice in Progresso but the water not so nice. Progresso in general is a bit dull. Merida is a great town.

I made this statement today on KZbin,; I purchased /deposited on a cruise this month. When I read my invoice it said INSURANCE DECLINED. I WAS NEVER offered insurance. Consumers need to read. This includes me.

@Nancy-nx9cf You can still buy travel insurance. You have something like a 2-week grace period after your initial booking to add insurance without any consequences. After that, you can still get insurance, but it may exclude pre-existing conditions regarding medical coverage.

Always, always, always add travel insurance into your calculations. The only time I don’t bother with travel insurance is for domestic holidays within a couple of hours drive of home. Our insurance is more expensive because of chronic health conditions. Last cruise it nearly cost as much as one extra person, but we still took it. The biggest reason to get it, IMO, is for if you have to have medical repatriation after a serious accident. That’s “remortgage your home” levels of expense.
