A total nightmare. We took our whole adult family with lots of grandchildren on our 40th anniversary cruise. I paid for ocean view rooms for everyone, because I was scared that the grandkids would get out of control on a balcony. Yea, I was a little paranoid, but I could sleep better at night.

makes no sense, I think you just wanted to spend less, you can't stop things from happening if they're going to happen. You teach your kids and hope for the best, that's just the way it is, what's next, no stake cause they might choke.? Do you know how many kids have been on those balconies and nothing has happened.? I feel bad ffor all, but it's impossible to avoid every dangerous situation, it's up to people to do the right thing, a 12 year old knows better.

Well I agree with you that parents need to do a good job of watching their kids, what's not forget the fact this is a 12-year-old. This is not a baby, this is a 12-year-old who should know the difference between right and wrong and that there's danger in playing on a balcony. More information is needed, but it's not a baby. What kind of playing was that kid doing with friends? Was there an element of daring each other to do stupid things? Very sad situation and condolences to the family.

As for this case we don’t know all the details to make an informed decision. Eventually the official report may be released. Maybe an additional safety video just for kids but like you said young people feel invincible, I did until my grandmother died in a car accident. If you don’t want to call something for what it is…then just state the end result. “Cruise ship horror, child dies from interior cabin.” Or in the case of ANY ADULT, “person jumps off cruise ship.” There has not been a single adult that has simply “fallen” off any MODERN cruise ship. This is physically NOT POSSIBLE.

I was going to post that too. So many ridiculous people online presuming he was just a stupid kid when they do not even have all the details. He was playing with his new friends and tumbled over the railing. It was not an act of being irresponsible. Some on the Facebook Harmony group who knew him said it was suicide, but I will not debate it as I, as well as many others here, was not there.

These incidents are called Accidents for a reason. The end result is no worse than other accidents that cause fatalities. It is tragic. Hopefully we can learn. We are retired and love having children on cruises and have gone with our children and grandchildren multiple times.

Some will tell you no one can go over unless they want to (suicide) but that does not seem to be the case. I would say as a parent I would not want any child that age on a balcony on any ship without parents. Where were the parents? That is a tough age to control but balcony should be off limits. I can't imagine the horror for passengers that saw this and of course the family. So sorry for all involved.
