Crumbling Brick Repair | Save Thousands

The exterior brick work on my chimney was in poor shape. Chipped brick, missing brick, broken brick...it was a mess. This is a quick overview of how I transformed the exterior brick in to something more visually pleasing. I'll also talk about the contractor's I've dealt with and what their cost were for repair. Doing the work, at your own leisure, will save you thousands.
Supplies:
Behr concrete stain ($30)
Four 1.5" paint brushes (About $3/each)

My Uncle taught me how to tuckpoint. The mortar gun by Quick Point is a dream! You'd probably be better off dropping that brick in a bucket of water before you start. Mist that mortar three times a day for three days.

Your problem was a weak or cracked crown which allowed water inside the stack and slowly spelled brick or left the white powder which is salt driven out by salts of mortar that was used during the build. All you had to do was remove the crown and install a new cement crown. But the bandaid you did will last a year or two and then will flake and shall again. Always adress the crown on a chimney 9 times out of 10 it'll be the crown.

Should dampen the brick before applying that patch...applying to dry brick, it won't last long...it'll crumble off...wetting the brick first will adhere it properly

long term though it will come off best thing for it is to re point the brickwork and while theres no morter in the bed and perp joints give the bricks an acid wash. this way they will weather in correctly.

My chimney brick is spalling but I can't get it worked on until spring of next year 2022. It November 2021 now. I had a brick mason lined up to repair the chimney by doing brick repair and repointing and a new cap and waterproofing, but he never made it to do the job. No one will work on it until spring. Now I need to get it through winter with as little new damage as possible. I bought some sealer to apply before it gets too cold. I was also thinking about covering it with a tarp to keep it dry. Would covering it with a tarp be a good or bad idea?

Please do not put a tarp on your chimney. You could kill your self with carbon monoxide poisoning or burn your house down.

Three no-show up here in Maine. Including one guy who had recommendations, wasn't the cheapest, and had a $1k lock-in fee up front. He no-show'ed and I'm going to have to take him to court to get the money back. One guy who was willing to do the work we need (install smaller liner for a wood insert, and do some brick work on upper 8 feet of chimney) wanted..... get this... $23k. He recommended replacing the whole chimney though, as the hearth was cracked due to broken crown which was never fixed decades ago.

$500? Just setting up the scaffolding would cost 3x that easily.....if you hired the scaffolding company to do it, that alone could cost 3K +++!! And setting up scaffolding by yourself as an old guy? Its a real pain in the ass and could be dangerous. It could take all day for an older gentleman to just set it up......$500 is RIDICULOUS! I would just stay home.

I had a couple of spalled brick near the base of my garage door. Probably 10 years ago I filled in the front of the brick with plain mortar and painted the face. with exterior paint The patch is still holding though I did repaint the face maybe 3 years ago. IMO much easier than chiseling out the bad brick and then trying to hunt down a brick that matches in size and color. And I'm happy with how it looks.
