Something that I appreciate is that despite Tsubomi saying they haven't talked in a while, she never forgot Mob. She watched how he helped Emi and called him "Smooth" and was even gonna cheer him on during the race before seeing how determined he was and stopped so she wouldn't distract him.

Tends to happen the longer a series goes on. For the most part every character in the Simpsons was just a background stereotype until they got defining episodes. The VanHoutens for example were just a sight gag in their first few appearances.

Sure, but in anime it tends to not be very common for side characters to get accual character development, especially later in the story. Characters that are considered the "love interest" normally dont get any real character development, outside of a tragic backstory, or a very rose colored rather shallow depiction of their character.

@@Shockguey Yeah, but the Simpsons at the time had excellent writers. Anime in general don't have good character writing, so they heavily stagnate, so Mob Psycho is an exception in this case.

@@Wyllowisp Eh I wouldn't say anime in general is bad at character writing in a blanket statement. Really there's just a couple shonen anime specifically that don't flesh out side characters. Some of my favorite anime like Gintama, FMAB, and Gurren Lagann off the top of my head did pretty well with side characters. Hell, I still remember my boy Yoki from FMAB and how he clutched against Pride. Really it's just stuff like Naruto/Bleach that doesn't characterize side characters.

@@Wyllowisp That's a toss up question. A lot of seasons that started having weak episodes are the same seasons that expanded on the background characters. It wasn't until Season 12 or so that the slate was clean of the old writers. For example Moe's 3 episodes. The Boxing episode. The Handsome Moe episode. The Hawaii episode. Who's going to Hawaii? Am I going to Hawaii? Stop saying Hawaii in there!

I just love how sweet it shows Mob being. Not only has he grown confident enough to talk with Tsubomi, but he also noticed how the other two made her uncomfortable and provided the tissue she needed. No big hubbub, just a caring guy that looked out for her. He came.off really cool here, and I'm just happy to see Mob's growth playing such a big role in his day-to-day, even though he doesn't realize it

I just realized why it took so long for the story to show this side of Tsubomi. Because Mob is the main protagonist, we're seeing his crush the way his timid and insecure self had locked himself into seeing her. We were seeing an idealized image of her. But at this point in the story, Mob is becoming more confident with himself. With this confidence and maturity comes the possibility of seeing Tsubomi as the regular person she really is, and thus that side of her is now visible to us.

The thing about Tsubomi is that we're more often exposed to her through Mob's eyes. I'm surprised I don't see a lot of people pointing this out in the comments. Notice how at 0:17, her design is different. Her pupils are smaller and less exaggerated; she looks more like a normal girl in the show's universe. She also has lower eyelashes. At 1:44, once she composes herself and it's back to Mob's POV, her eyes return to the big moe-fied fashion we're used to seeing them as. 1:57

Yeah. Unfortunately it does come a little late in the series though, which is honestly my only real nitpick of the series. But at the same time it is pretty nice that they do it right before the finale, to keep that fresh in our minds before an important scene they share.

One thing that I think is interesting is how you look how maybe Mob came to this scenario. Considering all the powers we have seen from people far weaker than Mob, he literally could have probably read Tsubomi's mind with telepathy, teleported in/out or something crazy like that But he so happens to be there which implies to me he knew of this from pure social awareness and that's how he was able to help her out (something I don't believe he could have done prior to the events of Season 2)

Mob isn’t able to teleport or read minds, those seem to be unique abilities only certain psychics can use, unlike something like pyrokinesis. For example, mob has energy transference, something only himself and toichiro (who was very surprised Mob could do it) have ever used. The only people close to telepaths (in the anime, not the webcomic) are the twin brothers. But that’s not relevant. Mob has more than all the power he could ever want, and yet decided he wants to live peacefully.
