Nah. His first priority is "avoiding getting hurt", which "getting closer to the enemy to attack them" goes entirely against. On the other hand, shooting them from distance doesn't have that disadvantage so he's actually good at it.

Fun fact, Samurai were actually primarily archers and only really used the sword when they couldn’t use a bow. If you’re good enough with a bow that no one will ever get close enough to you to necessitate the use of your sword, you’re a top notch samurai.

Depends on time and place, but yeah. As time progressed, the horse archery lost emphasis as armor became better and more common, and Japan didn't have the horses required for true full on Superheavy Shock Cavalry ala Europe, so Samurai began to fight more and more on foot and in close combat on the battlefield, and whilst polearms like the spear or glaive were indeed the most common primary weapons there too, guys in heavy armor with a sword IS a good counter to blocks of peasant spearmen, at least when the sword guys are backed up by their own spear guys

Maple spent all her skill points to defense. Tokiyuki spent all his skill points for evasion. Meanwhile, Mai and Yui spent all their points to strength and Sonic spent all its points to agility. Imagine how crazy it is if they all team up.

Archers were actually pretty strong. He is using a longbow,meaning the lil lad is actually strong. You had to if you wanted to throw more than 10 arrows without getting tired.

What I get from this is that he's extremely athletic, it's just his muscle memory that screws him over in close quarters combat. His first instinct is to dodge so he can't put all his strength in his attacks and, even more critically, can't maintain his stance.

Samurai rarely ever used their sword on the battlefield. They were primarily horseback archers, using Naginata, spears and long swords such as Nodachi from horseback if the enemy got close. Forcing a Samurai into a situation in which he had to use his expensive heirloom Katana was like a modern, fully equipped soldier running out of options aside from his sidearm. Or a druglord using his golden Glock for self-defense. It gets the job done reasonably well, but there are cheaper, more effective methods.
