In this video I show you how I made my crusader cup boil lid out of aluminium. If you want to go straight to the nitty gritty and avoid my rambling intro, the making bit starts at 5mins 43secs. I hope you enjoy and find it useful! Thanks for watching.

Brilliant job Simon. Takes me back to when I was a kid living in the country that's how we did stuff, little sweat, little brain power, and a lot of fun when the job was done. I think I'll use that same plan to make one for my regular old stainless steel cup.

That's great work. Better than I could do.. I've been using G.I. canteen cups since I was eighteen, and that was several decades ago. They come with lids, so I'm fine there. I also have two Pathfinder canteen bottle cups, and they also came with lids. The only cup I have with no lid is actually the cup I use the most. I don't even know what brand it is. It's blue enameled, has a fixed handle, and I keep it hanging from my haversack, or carabiner it to my canteen strap when I'm not carrying a haversack. I use it for a quick drink, or for coffee when I make a full pot. There are times when a lid would be handy. After watching this video, I think I'll try making one. Great job.

Thanks James, glad you found it useful! I now use the pathfinder cup with a stainless Nalgene bottle, I really like it, but I think I’m going to add better handles that wrap around the cup further and are then longer when in use, if you know what I mean. Good luck with your lid! Thanks for watching, Atb, Simon.

Brilliant work mate. I recently bought a battered Austrian aluminium mess kit, which arrived which some huge dents and very slightly crushed. After spending an hour with a small anvil and a hammer, I managed to get it 90% back into shape, and 100% in working order. It made me realise that whilst aluminium is not perfect, its great for home projects because its surprisingly mailable. Thank you for the video and the excellent work mate. I might do this as my first canteen diy project!

Excellent video 😀 I have one of the lids the guy on ebay makes, wish I had the skills to make my own but it was easier just paying the tenner. Brilliant bit of kit. The plastic lid,I've never used mine for cooking but once water is boiled I take off the metal lid and pop the plastic one on and drink my brew. I also have an American canteen set so I might give it a go and make a lid for that after seeing how straightforward it is

An excellent video and I have now made a lid based on your presentation using some spare 1mm Aluminium sheet and a simple hand held Jigsaw to carefully do all the shape cutting . To create a 4mm larger than template version on the Aluminium I drew a 4mm radius circle on some stiff card poked a hole in the centre then cut out the disc . Pushed the fine end of the Sharpie through the hole then firmly holding the wooden template on the Aluminium used the disc and sharpie to mark out the 4mm larger shape .

Started watching a few vids here and there and I liked them so much I thought I'd go right back to the start and watch them all 😅 Love this little gem, things like the fact you made your own but still mention at the start where someone might be able to source their own just gives off the nicest, most genuine vibe and that is something I find to be a bit of a rarity on the ol' KZbin. Get in lad it's so good to see how far the channel has grown. All the best from a new fan 😁

Thanks for the ideas and the technique. This method can be used for about any size, or shape of container. I get a good bit of my gear at the thrift and reclamation shops; easy to find pots, but not lids; this idea opens up a whole new realm of re-purposed gear...cheers.

I did this twice. Once out of alloy. Second one, out of a stainless front off an old bbq. Stainless I can slip in pouch with water bottle and it doesnt bend. I did it basically the same. Cut out bashed it down. Improvement. From underside drill 2 small holes. Width between up to you, and you dull rounded end chisel or a piece of 4mm barstock rod. Sharp tap. Turn it over you have a raised divet. Dremel or drill out one end a bit. Stainless welding rod, cut, fashion a small triangle, closing last bene in divet. You now have a handel; that when you slide it into dremellled bit of raised divet will stay upright so you dont burn yourself when you pull it off fire.

As an ex 'tinner' (sheetmetalworker) if you had made anothr 'former the same size and clamped your ally inbetween with just your beaten edge rim all the way around, tightly clamped it makes the edge lip so much easier to form. I used to make edges like this using hard wood or 1/4" plate clamping my metal between tightly then slowly working my way around the edges tapping them over. If I was using stainless I'd use two formers made of 1/4"or 3'8" steel clamp down tightly then using gentle heat just enough (cherry red ) and it formed so much easier. Then when cooled clean up with scotchbrite or fine emery then polish and it always produced a good edge. (Quick tip, use a polished face hammer like a panel beaters hammer and it produces a lovely smooth flat edge.) 👍👍😉

Nice video. Here's a tip for forming the aluminium. If you anneal it once you've cut out the shape it will be far easier to work. All you do is get a bar of soap, scribble over the aluminium like it's a wax crayon. Then heat up the ally with a blow lamp of hot air gun until the soap turns black, then plunge the sheet into cold water. It may deform a little, but will be far easier to bend and shape. Hope this helps.

that was very useful. i may be able to do it now after seeing how. wish somebody made a quality gi nesting canteen system that was bigger..... bigger cup / bigger canteen too. i looked at the one you have and wished that they had not tapered it down at the bottom. the usgi one is relatively small as well, generally speaking. stainless steel is so hard to work with. i sure like stainless steel though and more than aluminum. i have never really cared for the vertical canteen bottle systems. i thank you and i thumbed-up!
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 6 жыл бұрын
+Martina Dejaquiz - Thank you Martina, and thanks for the thumbs up! I guess all the nesting canteens are a similar size - about 1 pint fir the cup (the one I used was) and 1 litre (32oz) for the bottle. If you want a bigger cup/pot the only other option is to go for a large nesting pot that fits over a Nalgene or KleanKanteen bottle - Toaks make one in Ti and I believe there is now a bigger stainless steel one from the pathfinder school. Otherwise, there is always the Swedish army trangia canteen system (of which there is a stainless steel version if you are lucky enough to come across one!) that includes a larger pot, a lid that you can fry in, a denatured alcohol stove and stand and a fuel bottle - but no water bottle! It’s always a trade-off!!! Hope you manage to find a system that works for you. Thanks for stopping by! Atb, Simon.

I like the lid and even have the same style cup it would make a nice small project for me also do you enjoy pine needle tea if to I have found a nice way to make it if you are like most outdoors men and worry about pine sap from the needles use the paper coffee filters and some string to hold them closed in place of an infuser it works and is disposeble

Hey Simon.. new sub. Great channel, I'm just getting in to canoeing myself.. it's a new part of me I didn't know existed and so much fun.. I'd love to come up for a paddle.... you seem a great bloke. My two daughters are hopefully going to catch the bug to. Watch Ray Mears a lot got his books. But no substitute for time with a person of experience. I'm right next to the Taw and get out as much as I can. Thank you from sunny Devon.

Hi Damian. Canoeing is great isn’t it! The perfect way to explore one of our last remaining wildernesses - the rivers. I’m sure your daughters will love it too, your enthusiasm will see to that! If you’re ever up this way and fancy a paddle, just shout! 👍😁🛶
