My first canteen cup was the old style and I have carried that thing many many miles and eaten many good meals from it. I still have it in my collection today and it is definitely a sentimental item at this point from so many good memories in the field. Good information and an awesome idea for baking you showed. I had not seen that method before. Thanks for sharing brother! Take care!

One of the most loved pieces of mil kit (up there with ponchos and woobies) but also one of the worst. Burn your lips on the metal, and takes forever to heat with tablets. Sure, I still have one. lol Would love to see more canteen cup cooking videos.

Hello Blackie, and thanks for the tips. Just noticed I had not been notified of your video's and several other of my first subs. I see google or you tube as undid the bell . I had never seen the heavy duty canteen cup cover like yours before. We were never issued a cup cover in Nam, back in '67-'68 or the stove bottom. We made them with a church key and the short cheese can. Heat tabs came with c- rations or so they were called .
@BLACKIETHOMAS5 жыл бұрын
the cup cover is the old canvas canteen cover from early nam era it was replaced with the nylon late i n the war and thru the 90's till the modern one took over..i like the canvas one for the liner that holds heat and also can be wet in hot weather to help cool the water by evaperation

@gijr20035 жыл бұрын
No mention of the tension bubble the folding handle uses to keep tab pressure against the cup "hooks". It's between the rivets. 2:11 shows it. If handle is bent and doesn't keep pressing against the bubble, tabs can unhook. When you fold foil around canteen, press cup onto canteen, it will mold the foil tighter.

Really like the way you showed the features and differences in these cups. I agree with your selection for canteen cup stove also. I was distracted at the beginning of the video... did you mention the horizontal slot on the handle that is made for inserting your bayonet blade so as to extend the reach on the cup? That is, it worked that way back when we had skinny bayonets. 😉

Find I go back to the old style stove stands no matter how many newer gizmos I buy, they're light, totally unobtrusive in your kit, highly useful and inexpensive. If for some weird reason I had to pick one canteen stove stand to use exclusively, including all the Crusader ones and the like, it would be this one.

I have a question, is it safe to cook or boil water in an old canteen cup? I recently purchased an old ww2 canteen cup km co 1945, wash it many times with soap then i had coffee from it but i got a funny taste so this worried me so i stopped to use it, anyone can give me any advice thanks

try this go get barkeepers friend at the store with the other cleaning products and scrub the canteen cup..really well then rinse out and add water and put on stove and boil..see if that fixes the problem..if not in the long life of a canteen cup who knows what it was used for..my uncle used one to measure fuel for use in farm equipment
@robertmiller26292 жыл бұрын
I would love to get a heavey cover lid like what you are using but can't find them even in military surplus do you know where I can get one I have 2 steel canteens that I use and one cup with the solid wrap around handle that locks in place with the sliding latch and old style stove that locks to the bottom of the cup. I also have an alcohole stove ( trangiea ) that works great when needed for under it for cooking but again I lack the lid can you help?

I noticed you had a nalgene canteen instead of a GI canteen, just curious, why ? Where did you get the heavy duty lid, never saw that before, only the thin ones.
@BLACKIETHOMAS5 жыл бұрын
i got both canteen and cup lid from canteen shop .com..the nalgene canteen is dishwasher safe..so in the field that means i am safe to pour boiling wanterinto it..this will make the bottle into a hot water bottle for cold winter nights..and allows me to clean and steralize the canteen in the field..the g.i. cant take that hot of water it will melt..and if i am boiling my water as i often to to make it safe i can pour it in to canteen and not have to wait for it to cool
