I own a 2015 Mirage DE here in America. It is possibly the most hated car here by most self-styled "experts", but I love mine. It's an honest little car. It's a "city car" but I did once take mine over 100 mph. It gets excellent fuel mileage, and I love driving it. It's a challenge to keep the speed up, but that's part of the appeal to me. On the interstate highway, I can keep up with traffic with little or no problem. In Germany, where I am at the moment, this car is called the "Space Star" and there seems to be quite a few of them around. It deserves much more respect than it gets.

Buddies always get a good chuckle when I say I've wanted a Mirage for a good while now. Dead serious. 1. Dirt cheap 2. Lighter than a bag of hot shit 3. Isn't something I'd cry about if I damaged it 4. Has pretty good dimensions and turning radius to start with. As a person who has a decent collection of Mitsubishis in the stable, I can say I just want something I can play with. I've got spare engines and drivetrains and parts just sitting around. And, even if nothing's done to the engine, a quick M/T swap and proper suspension treatment would make this fun to take out on the A/X or R/X track. I mean... shit. For a car that's extremely cheap and easy to get, gut, and prep for race - why the heck not? If anything, saves me the costs of maintenance on the other larger, more expensive cars. Not to mention, how awesome would it be to whip around a hot pink shitbox Mirage (obviously properly prepped) and have it compete against proper track cars? In a 2000lb chassis? I'd say it's do-able. And, really, how expensive would it be to just drop that engine and trans and replace it with something more potent, when the host itself is cheaper than a tootsie roll to begin with? There is endless value in owning shitboxes for casual weekend race events.
@crustph3 жыл бұрын

I've got a 2015 (2017 engine, 2019 transmission) and eventually I'm planning on turning it into a racer. I'll turbo (should be able to torture 120hp out of it), but I'll keep the CVT. From what I've read, it should be able to handle it, and having max power the entire time I'm accelerating would be fantastic. With weight reductions, I could see it getting down to 1800lbs. Not an atrocious power to weight. I'll also install a sway bar on the rear axle and swap all 4 brakes to upgraded discs. Most of those mods are well documented on the forums, and none are particularly expensive. I'm not expecting to win races, but I definitely can see myself having fun with this little gassipper.
@slippercream3 жыл бұрын
@@Amy_A. The challenge you'll have with a CVT is that the gear "ratio" is still not ideal. And the fuzzy logic associated with shifting on these Jatco transmissions makes very little sense, if at all. So, not that it wouldn't be able to handle the torque (there are always doubts with a Jatco transmission) - the biggest downside is you wouldn't be able to extract as much usable torque to the ground as your engine can provide. If you want to stick to a CVT, I'd highly recommend looking at the DCT-470 found in something like a RalliArt CZ Lancer or Evo X MR. Lots more equipment and fabrication associated with retrofitting this (esp if you really want to retain a FWD application) - but you'll be much happier with the result in the end. Really, what you could just look into is getting a wrecked example, and sourcing drivetrain (and powertrain?) components from that, then retrofitting into a Mirage. Good luck!

Sounds like a bucket, but unlike the Aygo, it has actual boot space that is noticeably larger than an Alto's, I believe. Also safer than an alto. These cars are actually noticeably more expensive to buy, but would be one of the few cases where it is worth it

I drove about 1800 miles with 4 200+ pound guys plus packed with luggage in the back. It flew up the mountain passes and handled so much better with weight. Going up the passes it never went below the speed limit. High end torque is right! It wasn't a bad drive the seats are comfortable enough, and heat worked well. The only problem is it's way too light so it's just strange to drive as it always feels like it needs a sand bag in the trunk.

@ crustmediaph. The problem isn’t that people are used to driving sportscars and luxury cars. It’s that even other econoboxes like the Civic and Corolla have around TWICE the horsepower of the Mirage in their lowest trim. 78HP isn’t just slow. It can be downright dangerous in certain situations. ‘Not a sportscar’ is one thing. But ‘only half the power of a typical economy car on the road’ is something completely different.

Kinda wish mine was white.... its black. If I ever heal from my spinal cord injury I think ill wrap it with white.... and go for that classic white with red accent because fuck yeah.
@crustph3 жыл бұрын
Best wishes mate! yes white is waaaay better for cars than black. Its actually hard to maintain a black car. You know what, we're gonna make an episode about that lol

I had a 2018 first owner and it was literally the worse car I have ever owned. I never felt so unsafe. If I test drove it any season other winter so I could really feel the car out, I would have bought anything but this. Wheels bearings going out at 30k miles, rear defogger going out at 60k miles, cvt was over heating after 40k mile fluid flushes, wind knocks the car around, little sound deadening, engine sounds like an angry blender. I averaged 32-34 city and 38 highway. You're only getting more than that by driving like a semi with a full load. Highway merging is always scary since the car takes ages to get from 45 to 75. Crash safety videos from department of transportation has the Mirage rated at the lowest possible passing grade. I went off the road a little in a snow storm. Went in and out of a ditch, bent a wheel, broke a headlight, had some bumper damage, and needed an alignment. My insurance adjuster asked me if I just wanted to total it because he has totaled Mirages with less damage and simular miles. MSRP was $15.4k at the time and dealer wouldn't move on price. I don't know how anyone was getting them cheaper, claiming $10k with 0 miles. That's 1/3 off. I owned it for almost 4 years and the wife said our baby will not be brought into this world while I owned that car. It got traded a month before he was born.

if you dont mind if i ask, you mentioned that the mivec kicks in at 4k to 5k. what does that mean?
@natt72503 жыл бұрын
I own a Mirage. The engine has a low torque that I need to press the pedal to pass 4000 revolutions per minute to get the power I need for overtaking.
@crustph3 жыл бұрын
If you're familiar with the honda term "VTEC kicked in yo!" then its exactly like that. If not, it means that you'll suddenly feel a surge of power from the engine at 4000-5000rpm and above (because of the MIVEC). This is good for some cases like over taking and spirited driving. Hope this helps!
@johndanaway3 жыл бұрын
@@crustph dont think that any regular driver will be willing to rev the engine that high up. That won't be good for the engine in the long run. 3 to 4k is the max I would go. Moreover , it is damn noisy at high rev.btw, mine is white cvt 2012 model. I still keep this car as a backup car.
@johndanaway3 жыл бұрын
@@natt7250 me too, this car is kind of dangerous when overtaking on highway because the pick up is slow for cvt transmission. But I agree with this entertaining long term review, saying that it drives like a go cart. I suppose the 4k rev is for manual transmission only.

It's a good car but not great. The 3 cylinder engine vibrates on idle, sounds like a truck on cold start-up, shaking the top mounted airbox, making more noise. Rear spring is soft, rear shock is even worse, making the ride and handling bad especially with passangers. But the fuel consumption is good, so I will just have to live with that.
@crustph3 жыл бұрын
Do what we did, replace the shocks and get KYB springs. Changed the ride significantly
@tkangwei3 жыл бұрын
@@crustph I'll look into that. Does your car makes noises from front and rear going through speed bumps or bad roads?

I bought 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage in 2 weeks ago. I paid to fix caliber about $800.....and I don't know what is next....and they don't have parts in Vancouver, so they ordered it from Quebec. it will takes 2 weeks to come here.......if you live in canada, there is reason buying Honda and Toyota.

Sadly we aint from Canada. But note that the Mirage was also released in the US, which means your neighbor has stock piles of OEM and aftermarket parts for your Mirage! Cheers

When i over rev my mirage, the rpm goes down like really low, the rpm dosen't bounce like other hondas or mitsu, i dont know why, does your mirage have it too?
