Just got my hands on this LONG awaited model. This video is of my first impressions of the knife and the unexpected element to it I was a little surprised/confused by. Is the scale and flex an issue for you? Thanks for watching and be good to each other out there!

I had the same concerns when I got this Crucarta PM2, but after over 2 years of EDC, I have had zero issues with this design. They did the Cruwear nice as well as mine sharpens and deburrs great. Zero issues.

@@rangerjonoutdoors6429 Right on! But you have more choices Ranger Jon ..... Para 3 Crucarta, Military 2 and even a Crucarta Manix 2. I grabbed a Para 3 about a month ago when they first hit and gave it the second sharpening this A.M. Really felt good, edge came up fast, and deburred nice. I run a coarse edge on it at 600 grit as it's a shop knife, its impressive and strops back well. The micarta on my Para 3 is a dark brown/red, not tan like my Paramilitary 2, not sure if the colors change from batch to batch.

I appreciate your review. Honestly man, Micarta is tough as nails. We use it at work for various purposes as well as my last job as an industrial mechanic at a steel mill. Heck, I've even cut lengths of it to use as a punch for bronze bushings and it held up better than I expected. I don't think it will be an issue for 99.99% of users.

Hey thanks for the input and thanks for watching! I absolutely agree with you, I also have a lot of experience working with Micarta. However my concern wasn't really from a strength perspective but more from the perspective that there shouldn't be any flex on the scales to that level where you could fit a sheet of paper in between. Not on such an expensive knife made by a company with the ability to make a high end folder like Spyderco. The thinness of the cut behind the lock tab to me just felt way too thin in an agitative way. Kind of like it ruined the "flow" of the knife in hand and in use. It will be a problem for some, not for others. All that being said, I keep thinking about the knife and trying some different scales haha (Im a sucker for exposed liners)! Rock on.

I haven’t held one so I don’t know. But I do remember people made a similar deal about the flex in the bugout, which I do have. And that was a big nothing for me personally on the bugout. It moves a little if you squeeze a certain way, but otherwise I don’t notice it or care if I do. The performance is still there and I’m glad to have the extra lightness.

Cruwear has no place in a folder?! That made my brain stroke out for a second lol. I have Cruwear fixed blades and they’re great, for sure. You can abuse them all day and they’ll take it but that’s not why I like Cruwear in folders. Cruwear gets stupendously sharp and holds its front end sharpness quite nicely all things considered (which is old news to everyone, I know). When you couple that with the fact that it’s relatively stain resistant and easier to manage than s30v, it’s a knockout for folders, imo. As long as you don’t treat it like a fixed blade, you’re good to go 👍

Really liked the vid. I think you're right about the handle scales (and that G10 would not have the same problem). I actually own a Para 3 with aftermarket Micarta scales (and I love both the scales and the knife), but this also makes me aware of the compromises involved with the material. My knife doesn't have that issue with flex as the scales are much thicker. My Para 3 also came from the factory with a perfectly tuned action (no blade play, yet it would absolutely fall shut). When I swapped in my Micarta scales... I don't want to say I completely ruined the action, but it was def no longer perfectly tuned. I had to crank the pivot all the way down to eliminate blade play, and after that I had to use a bit of muscle to flip the knife open and shut. Recently, I tried to restore the action to its former glory. I tried the normal stuff (clean, lube, even polish the washers), and that made it smoother but not lighter. So I took the knife apart again and carefully compared the scales. Up to that point I honestly didn't notice how much thinner the factory G10 scales were. So I sanded down my micarta scales everywhere I thought they might contact the blade, reassembled my knife and... eureka, I got my perfect fall-shut action with no blade play back. Until I saw your video, I just assumed the guy who made my scales just didn't have his tolerances as perfect as Spyderco did. Then I saw your video and realized why he made the scales thicker. I also notice Spyderco built that knife to a price point. It's what $165? Like $15 more than the base model? And the scales are obviously the exact same dimensions as the regular G10 scales (which as you correctly observe is a more rigid material). So Spyderco obviously just milled them on the exact same machines, programmed the exact same way as with the regular G10 scales. As I just learned, it would be possible to make a Para military 2 (or Para 3) with Micarta scales that's great in every way (perfect action, solid construction) but... one way or another the extra labor involved would drive the final cost up by a lot since you'd either need crazy specific tolerances where the blade is secured by the pivot (which I'd guess would need to be determined by trial and error), or else you'd need to assign a QC person to each knife to hand-sand and get the spacing just right (also through trial and error like I did at home). Either way it'd probably bump the price from $165 to well over $200. Even though I love Micarta (and would def customize my own knife the same way again), I'd have to conclude by agreeing with you again. The solution for Spyderco (who, great as they are, still need to build their knives to some kind of price point) would probably be to do the next sprint run in some kind of fancy G-10 instead. Maybe something similar to what Hogue or Southern Grind use?

The full liner feel... I agree. The gayle Bradley, the pakkawood seki models. Even my sage 1 maxamet is super classy. Cruwear makes sense as a folder steel at high hardness, I’m wondering how hard they ran it. I’m getting this model to make custom scales. I even want to try to remove the show scale liner, and use carbon fiber for rigidity. I think of all materials, micarta would hold up the best against the pressures on the cutout. With stuff like g10 and cf, the material yields, then quickly breaks after the yield point. Micarta just flexes, but It does return. I’m wondering if someone could run a test flexing micarta seeing if they can fatigue it. Makes me consider a micarta framelock. OZ machine company has already done a carbon fiber framelock. The lip on the g10 model would certainly shear diagonally if that makes sense. Imagine the layers of cloth on top. It’ll have lateral strength, but twisting or diagonal forces can defeat the composite. I’m thinking about making a video about this. The way composites flex is very interesting. There’s even a difference in 1x1 twill and 2x2 twill. If you want, I can make some more rigid scales for you when I get mine, and get the pattern down (pro bono obviously)

The whole flexing micarta thing is a complete non-issue for me. Sure, it might flex a bit in extreme situations, but that's a lot different than the entire handle flexing, like in a Bugout. Those steel liners are stupid stiff and confidence inspiring. I've had my Crucarta PM 2 for about a week and absolutely love it. And like yours, mine came stupid sharp! The only knife I ever bought that came sharper was a TRM Neutron 2. That thing was beyond scalpel sharp!

The cutout looks like something that could fail if one has a bit of a bad luck when accidentally dropping the knife or getting something get caught in that area. The only ‘remedy’ I see is that on a full liner model it will be easier to make custom scales. Indeed - everyone has to decide for themselves whether this is an issue or not. Thank you for pointing it out.

The flex is there if your pressing specifically on that area! When I use (XL-XXL Sized hands) the knife in hammer grip breaking down double walled Cardboard, I don't notice the flex at all. Even activating the compression lock tab in normal use is not an issue! I personally don't see the scale failing in that area, But I'm sure we'll see post/pictures of breakage where people couldn't leave it alone. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and glad to see a video from you!

Yeah I don’t see it necessarily being at any inherent risk of just “failing” due to that flex, even tho I can see how it could over time. But for me, I can’t avoid squeezing that area of knife in general use. The biggest issue I personally have with it is just “lessening” the feel of the knife significantly for me. But! Everyone will have different opinions and use case scenarios. I know it’s going to work fine for some, be a total no-go for others, and be a firm middle ground for the rest, which is where I’d probably land at the moment. Thanks for watching!

I'll certainly agree that micarta just isn't an ideal scale material for folding knives, especially ones with locking mechanism that utilize part of the liner or frame. Even though the Shaman is of course a folder, those micarta scales are similar to scales one would see on a fixed blade knife, they are that beefy. If they would have skipped thinning the scales, that may have alleviated this issue quite a bit, but unfortunately in it's current form it does not feel like a very sturdy knife. I hope they are able to make some design changes and put out an updated version next year. It's surprising that they took so long, supposedly because of design challenges, yet still ended up putting out a moderately compromised design. Thanks for the review!

I just picked up a PM2 with CruWear and brown micarta. Comparing it to my older G10 PM2, I immediately noticed the thinner micarta section on top and larger opening. While it does look unfinished, I found this video which takes the knives apart and compares the scales and liners of the G10 and Micarta versions. I realized the G10 scales are not thicker -- they just include a top lip that narrows the opening. While the lip provides some structural rigidity and G10 is more rigid than Micarta, the author suggests there's no reason to be concerned about the micarta version in hard use. After watching this video, I'm inclined to be less concerned about the new design than I was originally. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6rSo62wh9pkeqc

On one, I changed out the scales to flytanium, and I left the other stock. If it’s any consolation, I’ve been daily carrying the micarta one for about 2 months, as I love the feel. I use the knife on a farm, and like a PM2 for a beater. I hadn’t even noticed that the scale has this cutout until seeing your video, but I have not had any issues with it cracking or the flex increasing. I’ve put it through some moderate usage, but nothing drastic. If mine is par for the course, I’d say that you’re totally fine using it as is without worrying about it breaking. Obviously, the micarta on mine has darkened quite a bit, but it’s holding up just fine.

I didn’t necessarily think of it as a point of failure especially not on a paramilitary, Just for me personally in my borderline OCD personality that scale flex and everything did bother me personally just a little bit too much. Glad it’s working out and if I ever get some spare scales or feel like dropping a little extra cash on one again in the future I know I will really enjoy it. Rock on. Enjoy the farm! Thanks for watching!

I got one of these recently. Great looking knife but was extremely stiff to open. I lubed it gently but now the lube has stained the wood and it looks crappy after owning for two minutes lol. Anyone have a suggestion to overcome this?

Use a nail file and break the inside edge of the cut out. It will stop catching. Very few knives under $400 bucks without a few sharp edges needing rounding over. It doesn’t take much. I “barrowed” a double sided one from my wife, I only ever need to use the smooth side.

Just a guess, but it's possible that they opted not to lengthen the lip, as seen in the G10 version, to prevent potential degradation of the end part of the lip, near the lock area, with a softer material like micarata.

Hi there! Nice review! I wonder if there are some other scales for this particular PM2? Cause there are tones of "conventional" scales for regular PM2 folders, but for this particular one, with full exposed liners, I didn't manage to find those.. Thanks! P.S.: maybe someone did Ti scales swap for PM2?
@HeWhoIsWhoHeIs
@HeWhoIsWhoHeIs 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm .... I think normal scales would still fit, as long as you use these screws. Maybe get G10 and sand them down a little on the back side if needed. It's still the same exact size and shape, right? Maybe when mine comes in I'll see if I can throw stock G10 scales on it and see if I can make it work.

One drop of super glue between scale and liner on opposite side of cut-out and almost all flex and definitely all warping goes away. Tried and tested.

Thats great that that worked for you! Good idea.I found that cut behind the lock tab to be overly thin and "wafery" feeling in use regardless of the flex. Just my personal preferences something about it drove me nuts. (First world problems i know! lol)

I just ordered one, can't wait for it. I'll keep the scales on until they become a problem, then I'll order flytanium scales for it. No big deal. I'm buying it for the steel, not the scales. And because it's a spyderco. The scales aren't important. I have a stock PM2, a Fradon Lock PM2, a Manix, Manix XL, para 3, I can carry while waiting for scales for this to arrive

It kind of depends on what you want from a blade steel. That will usually determine which PM2 you get. The S110V version is a great upgrade from the S30V model.

That cut out might be because that area has a tendency to pinch your hand when you slow roll the knife

For me, working landscaping/hardscape installation I couldn't use compression lock on most jobs because dirt and material would slip behind the compression tab and make it unable to be closed after a while. I've been bouncing around Spyderco's lockbacks, had a ton of use out of vtoku-2 endura but was just too thin and eventually bent. Just about to receive the Police 3 in g-10 and vg-10 so wish me luck on that, do you ever switch back to classic lockbacks?
@_brianm
@_brianm 2 жыл бұрын
I used to love the compression lock but over time have gravitated to the lock backs. Native 5 is my favorite (G10, though the FRN ones are also great). But my preferred tough job Spyderco is the Stretch 2 in K390. Police is a great model - hope it works well for you 👍🏻

@@_brianm native in LC200N is a great lightweight backpacking knife for me, picked up the police today and love the ergos and the chamfered g10. For me the stretch is a funky model but I've definitely considered it, especially with all the sprintruns

@markjg2275

That cutout is there because the linerlock has to move and flex to use it. The rest of the thin Micarta on the knife is supported by the liners . What you can do is replace the left side Micarta with an aftermarket grip or return the knife for a refund not worth keeping a knife with flaws. I am sure Spyderco tests these knives for toughness and they have a lifetime warranty if this knife should have a problem. I just ordered one of these today before I watched your video and I may cancel my order on this knife . These are not cheap knives at $171.00 and any imperfections is not tolerable.

Hey Mark I agree. I have been Telling everyone like yourself to go ahead and get the knife in your hands first before making any decisions. It’s a really nice knife and I’m looking forward to aftermarket scales to come out. I really do like the expose steel liners. The flex in personal issues I have with that micarta scale may not bother you or someone else at all I think this one will come down to a lot of personal preference honestly. The rest of the knife Is extremely appealing! Thanks for watching!

There’s always SOMEthing that gives me pause about purchasing a PM2. I was psyched to see this Crucarta version, but that giant, extended cut out on the lock bar side of the knife seems like a lazy/cheap design decision. Oh well, I’ll just buy another M4 Sage5 LW instead. They’re built better in Taichung than in Golden. That’s kinda sad, but undeniable.
