Stretch 2 xl in cruwear is a slicey devil and thin. Try that if you want thinner behind the edge.

Quality manager in an aerospace company here. Any time you heat treat a steel, there is a variation is hardness throughout the lot. You really have a .5 to 2 HRc variation. When you check hardness your putting 150kgf of pressure on a diamond indenter and measuring how far that tip moves into the material. Something like this you probably are not going to be measuring in HRc but will be using a lighter pressure scale like HR15n and converting it to HRc scale to reduce the damage you’re creating. There are other reasons to do this as well but we won’t get into it. You can’t really say what a given blade hardness is unless you check your particular blade. You also can’t easily control how hard the material will get as slight variations in chemical composition that is allowable by that material’s specification yields different hardness results. Knife people think that this is something specific to the knife industry, where these things are much more rigidly controlled in the aerospace and automotive industry standards. When people say, “they should heat treat it to a higher HRc”, I cringe because they don’t understand that it’s not that simple..

With that knowledge, I have the same purple PM 3 as he does in the video. I got the metals tested to see if it’s actually cruwear or I got a fake. Should my stuff be identical to his? Unfortunately this is all they got for me Fe 82.81% Cr 9.34% W 6.07% Mo 1.78% Help plz lol

You still have the crucarta satin one? Has that patina/rusting going by now? I threw some frog-lube on mine initially because I figured tool-steel=rust, but no real patina after light use and I’m wondering how much is frog lube and how much is the crucarta?

Did you notice any difference in edge retention between the black one and the micarta one at the different hrc? I’m always tempted to go for higher hrc with cruwear but I do like the blacked out KnifeCenter models.
@allthingsknives
@allthingsknives Жыл бұрын
The current knife center ones will have plenty of edge retention and odds are they have a similar heat treatment to the latest runs. Any hrc of Cruwear they run is a joy to sharpen and use.

Excited for the fully serrated ayoob. I feel like cruwear is a great steel for serrations

It keeps it’s fine edge for quite awhile and has a great toothy edge
@MDM1992

Serrated edges are the worst, the only use for a serrated edge is if your too lazy or incapable of sharpening a fine edge. A fine edge can do everything a serrated edge can and more, a serrated edge will never be able to do everything a fine edge can do.

@@MDM1992 personally I don’t own a single serrated edge for that reason, I could see it having use if you cut rope all day

I know this video's over a year old but I was looking at DLT and saw that they still have the coded PM2 and para 3s still available, i wonder if that means most of the purple para 3s will be around 61 like yours

How would the Micarta PM2 blade sharpen up with traditional whetstones? I have 320, 1000, 3000 grit stones (not diamond) and then a green compound on leather strop. How far should I take it grit wise, or would you recommend avoiding whetstones and investing in a diamond set? Ideally I'd like to stick to the set I already have! Cheers!
@allthingsknives
@allthingsknives Жыл бұрын
I’d do a diamond set your edge retention will suffer and your stone will wear more

I would look up videos of people who actually use traditional stones to sharpen all kinds of steels. Rough rooster knife sharpening is a good channel. He mostly uses Arkansas stones.

If you don’t like spending too much time to sharpen then diamonds are the best but if you don’t mind taking a while then I’d say it can be done, me personally I only have 3v as a super steel and It’s not hard at all to get sharp.

Personally I like Cruwear more than 20cv I find edge retention on factory knives is better toughness is better and so is sharpen ability 20cv is more stainless though so if you live with a lot of moisture definitely something to consider
@YaYa-ke1zr
@YaYa-ke1zr Жыл бұрын
20cv kicked my arse the first time I sharpened it… but I’m still carrying it over my Cruwear because there’s never any rust (and it holds its edge better than LC).

Yeah I'm struggling to pull the trigger on 2 pm2's for a similar reason, I use o1 tool steel a lot, and have a couple of very well heat treated n690co blades which while they don't hold the edge forever are surprisingly tough, I want to buy a pm2 cru wear purple and the "blurple" s110v (or whatever it is) but I'm scared they will be brittle and chippy compared to what I'm used to. I don't care if my blades don't hold an edge forever because I always carry a pocket stone and mini strop. Toughness is my main concern for any knife.
