Excellent point. It’s the same with fast motorbikes. People spend a fortune saving a few grams here and there on the latest bikes and components thinking it’s going to make them faster (the fact a modern 1000cc sports bike is so fast you can’t possibly use it properly on a road anyway seems a moot point they can’t grasp). The funny thing is, most of these blokes are about 50 Kgs overweight 😂

The guy in my bike shop in Colchester, England suggested it was the best road/gravel combo bike for my budget, which your review has reassuringly confirmed. Great video. Your channel is quickly becoming one my favorite YT bike channels. Both are clearly excellent bikes for the reasons that you aptly describe. I might note, however, they are on the aggressive side for a gravel bike. For someone (like me!) that needs a bit more stack, but wants this sort of fast gravel/road capable bike, the Argon 18 Dark Matter and Giant Revolt Advanced are excellent alternatives to consider (and are priced at or below the level of the Cervelo).

Great review, though the Aspero doesn't check all boxes for me anyway (handling like a road bike but still perfectly capable of cruising on fire roads and exceptionally lightweight). I would be really interested to see/hear your take on the Specialized Crux vs. the Giant TCX Advanced Pro 0 - from my point of view they should be pretty similar...? Great review pretty much spot on! I had an Aspero for about 6 months. Sold it and got a crux (expert) instead. I have no regret in switching to the crux. It's the kind of bike I've always wanted: rides like a road bike, can handle rough roads and is light:) The crux checks all the boxes for me. The ride feel of the crux is also much more refined than the Aspero. They are both stiff but the crux just feels more lively. I'm definitely keeping the crux and may get a 2nd pair of (lighter)wheels for road riding.

Question? When you were observing the on-road differences between the two bikes, did you run them on road wheels/tires....on the same road wheels/tires? Maybe not wheels if you're running the Classified system on the Aspero, but tires?

Great Review.. I just picked up a used Aspero and have been using as my road bike. I had a checkpoint and absolutely hated it. The Aspero is what I was hoping for in my checkpoint when I ordered it back in 2020. But, I got the updated checkpoint. I am running Aspero with Reserve 30/34 with Conti GP5000 and man snappy and fast on the road. My back up bike is my new Revolt. And love that just as much as the Aspero but I do more bikepacking and loading up the Revolt.

What are your thoughts on the Aspero vs Crux in the setting of cyclocross? Where tight handling is a key factor, looks like the Crux has more space between the top tube and down tube for shouldering and 0.5mm more BB height. The other thing that I find interesting is I would go 49cm for Crux whereas feel like I could go 51 with a shorter stem or 48 with longer stem on the Aspero. Will likely not ride either on the road much aside from winter training or some mixed surface riding/racing with 30cs. But the bike that is gonna have the sharper handling between the tape (not as good for gravel) would probably be the better CX/Gravel bike for me. Was surprised to see my Norco Search which I've only ridden once, has a very aggressive stack/reach ratio and tighter trail compared to the Crux and Aspero, however, its wheelbase is significantly longer so maybe a bit of a hinderance in CX. First gravel race in the rain tomorrow (2nd ride on the bike) so will get to understand it better with more saddle time to help determine what I want when I upgrade to a higher end carbon bike for gravel and CX.

What size bikes are you riding here? The Crux has a slammed stem and looks like the perfect size, whereas the Aspero has a very long stem with spacers and saddle pushed far back.

Great video, I've been looking at both bikes in addition to the Ridley Kanzos and 3T Exploros with further complicates the decision with them offering 2-3 variants on these bikes. All four seem to receive great reviews in areas they excel.

I contended with the same choice. Ultimately I bought the Aspero, arrived in the post today, but I'm away working, won't get to open the box until Monday night. I rode a Crux, which didn't thrill me. I think the Ridley looks great and the Explorer also looks great. I think buy the one you like or you can get a good del on in the build you like. Mine its just Apex 1x, but I got a killer price in the Sunset Purple. It will upgrade nicely.

I currently have a Bmc Urs, a gravel bike that I bought on the wings of enthusiasm and that goes great off-road, but now I realize I want something more roady because I also go out on road a lot with friends (even buying 2 bikes could be a solution). I remain with the doubt because both the Aspero and the Crux are fantastic! I want to ask you a question about the wheels: you got the 303s, beautiful. If you are running the Roval Terra carbon bars on your Crux, try swapping it out for a different carbon bar, it will greatly change the ride quality and compliance off-road. The Roval Terra bars are too stiff and make the ride really harsh. I have the Crux pro frameset with SRAM Red and Zipp 303 Firecrest and have it built to 15.04lbs with pedals, 10-50T, Easton carbon bars, Cadex saddle…

after hearing your comments re: steering/feel, I checked the geometry charts for both bikes. Some things don't make sense. For example, comparing sz 56cm (my size), both frames have the same head tube angle, and the Crux has a slightly longer fork offset than the Aspero. But, the Cervelo chart shows a lower trail number than the Crux, which is counter to how HT angle and fork offset interact to determine trail. The shorter offset should result in higher trail, not lower. One of the charts, or maybe both, is wrong, unless they're calculating the values based on significantly different tire sizes.

I have 32mm GK standard rubber (kind of a semi slick but not the SS) on my Aspero, on Zipp 303 Firecrests, and the tyres measure 35mm on the wheel. I’ve done the same comparison as you - checking power when riding with people on road bikes - and I’d agree that I’m needing to put out 15-20W more to keep up. I keep meaning to put 28mm slicks on the Cervelo and see how much that margin comes down; intuitively I reckon it will be down to 5-10W at that point, judging by my times and average speed for a regular 115km ride on my road bike (30mm slicks) and the Aspero on the GKs. Another good video mate.

I recently made the move from a Diverge to a Scott Addict Gravel 30, big difference and improvement in my opinion! The Diverge definitely soaked up a lot of the bumps better, but the Addict Gravel is such a speed machine without sacrificing too much bump absorption. Would love to see what you think of that Addict Gravel!

@@samcp I have no experience with 650B wheels, but it does have clearance for 700c x 47c tires (with a 1x set up). I used the 45c tires it came with and when aired at 30 psi rear and 20 psi front it really helped a ton with absorbing impacts! Personally I felt the trade off was worth it, I feel like I gained a ton of speed and lost minimal comfort. The addict gravel is also much more of a pleasure to ride on the road too which was something I was looking for! The Diverge was too sluggish on the road for me, so it stayed on the trails whereas this Addict can do both very well.

All things equal, generally speaking, I think the Crux is probably 5-7% slower than the Tarmac and the Aspero would be a bit slower. That's my hypothesis.

I truly love my Aspero on both gravel and road. Did you try the Aspero after flipping the fork adapter? I would guess the shorter wheelbase would make it feel more “twitchy” on the road like the Crux….

Many confuse or do not understand the two settings on the fork. The setting to the shorter wheelbase means more smoothness. The setting for the longer wheelbase means more agility. It's not primarily about the wheelbase, but about the trail on the fork. If you move the front wheel more to the rear with the setting (smaller wheelbase), the trail on the fork increases. The bike runs more smoothly. If you set the adjustment forward (bigger wheelbase), the trail on the fork becomes smaller, making the handling more agile. So it's the other way around than one would intuitively think.

It wouldn’t change my opinion between the bikes, here’s why: The Aspero was my first gravel bike from April of last year and I feel the same about it now as I did when I rode it last year, which I rode with the same Reserve wheels I currently have on my Crux, but with 38mm GravelKing SK’s. My opinion here is independent of the heavier wheels and tires. Hope that makes sense.

Agree with the cable management. One observation: if the Crux is built with GRX Di2, you'd run into the same issue you have with the Aspero. I built mine with Di2 and I dislike it so much, that I am ripping it off my Crux and re-building with Force etap AXS 2x. While I absolutely love GRX Di2, it is not the best choice for the Crux in my opinion -very messy, plus the e-wire is too thin/flimsy, I feel it could break very easily; plus aesthetically, it doesn't look good.

I built my Crux up with the 12 speed Di2 Ultegra. Works great and since it’s semi-wireless you don’t have to deal with cables going into the downtube. I prefer the looks and shifting of Shimano over SRAM, and the front derailleur is much less bulky so you can fit larger tires. Also, it’s about 300 grams lighter than Force.

I routed the di2 cable behind the rear brake hose in the same port, so avoided the normal hole that the cable would normally go into. Agree SRAM is neater but no XpLR about so I couldn’t go that way.

You don't mention the tyre difference between the two, which is a significant difference both off road and on road. The Aspero tyres are bigger and chunkier and heavier, so of course it's going to be slower on the road and more comfortable on gravel! Therefore the comparison doesn't work. Tyre selection is everything. ....I have an Aspero which I ride on road with carbon wheels and road slicks - it's an amazing road bike. The geometry of the Aspero is also virtually the same as a Cervelo R5 or Soloist, especially with the flip chip in the forks mounted in the rearward setting (which you also neglect to mention). I think you'd find that if you put road tyres on the Aspero you'd easily keep up with your road bike mates.

👍🏻 given you can only ride one bike at a time, I suggest you swap the same wheels and tyres across both bikes in another comparo on and off road - one set with road tyres and the other with gravel tyres. The Allroad N-1 comparo is really interesting. … In my experience the Aspero is actually better on road than on gravel! In fact it’s so good it’s become my road training bike! The crux would be great on road too I’m sure, but I think the Aspero is more versatile. …NB: Having said that, I ride a 3T Exploro on gravel which also has road bike geometry, but has real tyre clearance for wider tyres. The tires I was using on that ride have a really low rolling resistance, which are a huge factor into that number being so low. It’s my best guess. If I were to compare my crux setup now vs my tarmac setup, the difference would be much bigger.

Crap fabrication, little to no real quality control (if it makes it out of the cookie cutter mold in one piece it’s getting sold to gullible fools regardless of how shitty the layup is, how poor BB and HT tolerances are, and how crappy the frame alignment is). Fools will knock themselves over to buy this silly priced cheaply made garbage. 😀😀
