I finally watch NAPOLEON DYNAMITE (2004) for the FIRST TIME!
------------------------------------
Movie Summary:
In small-town Preston, Idaho, awkward teen Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder) has trouble fitting in. After his grandmother is injured in an accident, his life is made even worse when his strangely nostalgic uncle, Rico (Jon Gries), shows up to keep an eye on him. With no safe haven at home or at school, Napoleon befriends the new kid, Pedro (Efren Ramirez), a morose Hispanic boy who speaks little English. Together the two launch a campaign to run for class president.

I'm always worried when people react to this film with no warning whatsoever. This film is semi-autobiographical on the part of the director. It's an indie film that was picked up by a big distributor after it did well at a film festival. This film was really funny to the high schoolers and young adults at the time it came out, but I'm not sure if the dry humor and strange pacing makes sense outside of that context. I would say that the film is kind of about the mediocrity of rural life and of being just an average nerd in high school when that was unpopular, and the humor relies on that relatability. Things just kinda happen, and there isn't always a through line, because that's how life is. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It was such a big cultural moment, and it's fun to see new people liking it. Also, the director went on to make Nacho Libre with Jack Black, and the actor for Napoleon went on to act in Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell.

Deb is ploayed by Tina Majorino, who was the main girl in Waterworld and went onto Grey's Anatomy after this. Jon Heder (Napoleon) was later in School for Scoundrels with Billy Bob Thornton, Benchwarmers, a surprisingly decent Rob Schneider film with David Spade, and Blades of Glory with Will Ferrell. Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) played the Wolfman in the brilliant The Monster Squad.

I was teaching HS English at Valley High in Sacramento when this came out, and for some reason all my students went to see it and DEMANDED that I see it, too. So I dragged my daughter and fiance to a Sunday matinee and watched it. I was not at all sorry; I thought it was hilarious, but what I really appreciated was the fact that my students loved it. I taught kids from all over the world and all over south Sac. Only thing they all had in common was that they were all from financially strapped families. But they loved that goofy ass film, so I did as well.

Since you asked, my "favorite" scene is one that probably no one else is gonna pick or talk about: I like the moment when Uncle Rico is recounting how he almost made state champ if only his coach would've put him in the 4th quarter. I love that scene because his acting is really top-notch in a film like this. It also shows the reality of people like his character in that moment, stuck in the past, trying to somehow still capture their lost dreams in a life they didn't ask for yet somehow ended up in, unfulfilled and dissatisfied.

Holy crap.... This makes me feel old or maybe it was just small town life vs city life, I don't know. It took a while before people actually got this movie and then it exploded, there were T-shirts everywhere, people talk like this now in their everyday speech and this is where it comes from. Welcome to the Northwest. The Director Jared Hess went on to direct Gentleman Broncos with Sam Rockwell starring in it and Nacho Libre starring Jack Black about a Mexican Friar that wants to be a pro wrestler. Jared Hess got the idea from a couple of years he spent in Mexico along with his later to be wife who helps him co-write all of his movies. Jon Heder has been in a few other movies, probably most notably Benchwarmers with David Spade and Rob Schneider. He was in Blades of Glory with Will Farrell and was in an episode of My Name is Earl with former Misfits Jason Lee. Man, the fact he doesn't know about this movie or the humor goes way over his head, yeah, makes me feel old, or maybe it's just urban vs rural. Its also worth mentioning that Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) is in this. What a champ. Jon Gries was in the Taken trilogy, with very small roles but in them nonetheless. He was also in Monster Squad in the 80s and Real Genius alongside Gabe Jarrett (Apollo 13) and Val Kilmer. He was also in a really bizarre movie called Joysticks (a very adult movie) that I thought was his first screen appearance

I sat here trying to think of my favorite scene for the longest time and couldn't do it. every scene is my favorite scene. this movie is a gem and super quote-worthy. I still say "eat the food!" and "your mom goes to college!" regularly. 🤣🤣🤣also, Lafawnduh is a queen. 👑

The school bus scene: in rural areas, the elementary, jr high and high school studentbodies who live in the sane area are so small that they all ride on the same bus. They just don't have the budget to take the kids on separate buses.

I grew up in the western part of Washington, think the town in this movie, but wetter. My town had about 150 people, and I had to go to school the next county over. They had to gather kids from 7 towns, and all 400 kids, kindergarten through 12th grade, fit in one building. To say this movie is anything but an accurate docudrama about rural life in the PNW, is a flat out lie. I lived this life until I was 11, and then my parents moved me to California, so I could have more opportunities in life than teen pregnancy, drugs, and cow tipping. When this movie came out, my brother freaked out, and refused to watch it ever again, as, in his words, “there, but for the grace of God, go I”….I guess it hit a little too close to home😂
