Just make them alone for 3$ plus 10$ for the tool. An idea for the next video to follow DIY history 😀

You’d need to stress test the DIY version. Most people don’t have the ability to do that.
@CryptoGuide2 ай бұрын
Most DIY stuff will be very robust if it's stainless steel. :)
@martinlutherkingjr.55822 ай бұрын
@@CryptoGuide Lopp’s stress tests in 2018 showed even just a different manufacturer with the same general design can make a difference. Billfodl performed worse than the cryptosteel cassette. Cryptosteel uses 304 stainless steel which has a higher melting point than the 316 stainless steel used in Billfodl.
@CryptoGuideАй бұрын
304 and 316 stainless really don't have a meaningfully different melting point, the main issues in his tests have often come down to poor material selection (some that use aluminum, instead of stainless) or when the design itself has problems. (Which is very much the case for cassette style options)

What happens if I accidentally spill all the letters when I decide to open it?
@mellowtime97122 ай бұрын
Thanks for the video as ever. One thing I don't understand about these kinds of permanent steel wallets is the fact that the seed phrase is left in plain text. That would be fine if it was part of a multisig solution but not for a single sig solution. The tamper-evident seal won't stop anyone taking your coins, they'll just let you know that someone has been there. The emptied wallet would give you exactly the same information. Not all family members are trustworthy! What I would like to see is a system where you can mix up or encode the seed phrase somehow. The instructions for decoding can be in a separate location or even multiple locations. It would be the equivalent of password protecting the steel wallet. [This would of course be in addition to other electronic hardware wallets so there is no single point of failure.] Or given your experience of helping people recover wallets, is this a step too far?
@CryptoGuide2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment :) Basically if you want to add a layer of protection to a 12 word seed backup, this is best done via a BIP39 passphrase.
@dave476632 ай бұрын
Agreed. Use a BIP39 passphrase.
@mellowtime97122 ай бұрын
Yes - that makes sense! Thank you.
@CryptoGuide2 ай бұрын
No worries, just be sure to include your passphrase in your backups somewhere too, just not with the seed words ;)

Hi great videos, I was wondering if you could make a video setting up a block stream jade with sparrow airgapped and setting up a watch only wallet through sparrow ? Thank you
@CryptoGuideАй бұрын
So would you intend to have the Jade initialized with a seed and be doing the QR unlock thing or would you be looking to run the Jade statelessly? (So load a SeedQR each time)

Hello! How safe are the fasteners at the beginning and at the end, an accidental opening is possible and that the words will sleep?
@CryptoGuideАй бұрын
They are very firmly closed, you would need to cut them off or prize them open with plyers to get them off. (It isn't going to happen by accident unless you didn't compress it flat to start with)

Hello, Im missing 1 word for my cardano (shelley era) wallet. I dont have the address for it. Is there a way to go about this?
@CryptoGuide2 ай бұрын
BTCRecover doesn't currently support creating an AddressDB for Cardano, but could likely be added through a direct feature sponsorship. At the same time, if you are only missing a single word then it would be straightforward to code up a custom script to do this. As long as you have the recovery seed, that is a straightforward recovery. Just follow my video on recovering from sending funds to the wrong blockchain for Eth clones.

That's right, the recipient was a normal wallet with a seed phrase on your phone, so it's a straightforward recovery. (Doesn't matter where the funds originally came from)

The security wire seems like kind of a gimmick…can’t an attacker just get some of that wire? There’s nothing unique about it from what it appears.
@CryptoGuide2 ай бұрын
It's about being tamper evident. One of the challenges with private keys and stuff is that someone could have your keys, but choose to wait until a later date to rob you.
@martinlutherkingjr.55822 ай бұрын
@@CryptoGuide Yeah, but if an attacker has some of that wire they can just re-seal it so there’s no tamper evidence. The wire isn’t serialized I assume.
@CryptoGuide2 ай бұрын
The wire is distinctive and the yellow clamp at the top can't be reused, once it is locked that's it.
