Yea this seems like a hack job with terrible QA. The PC port still not being multithreaded and the performance issues on consoles make this a very disappointing release. Seriously, the 31 FPS issues is "surprisingly difficult to pin down"? I can toggle half refresh v-sync in any game on PC, it's really not that complicated. If it IS actually that hard to pin down, it just speaks to how terrible the code base is that they're working from and makes these devs look like a bunch of clowns.

I think John did hold back a litle He did not mentioned or show any of the terrible problems the game had before patch Image problems everywhere! It was almost umplayable .. you had to reset the game in differente graphic options many time so the imagem can be " normal". Besides many more glitchs

I also find funny we now have 4 completely different versions of Crysis 1) OG PC DirectX10 version 2) CryEngine 3 port on X360/PS3 3) Switch version of the CryEngine 3 version from X360/PS3, but with SVOGI 4) The new PC/X1/PS4 versions, with a much better implementation of SVOGI, RT and different water rendering I'm here wondering ... WHY are there so many versions. And ironically, the biggest issue with Crysis, the poor multithreaded CPU scaling (which WAS FIXED in Crysis 3) is still bleh in the Remaster

Honestly I was scratching my head when they decided to go with a remaster rather than a remake.. I feel it would've been a great opportunity for them to rebuild the game from the ground up using elusively next gen features to give a new generation a "can it run Crysis" moment. But ultimately their goal was to make money so a remaster makes more sense in that lens.

If Crytek truly cared for there flagship game, they would have handled the port themselves. Making a new port from the original source code & converting asset to the newer engine to use. 'high tier'? Maybe ten years ago, but they haven't made anything noteworthy in awhile. I know hunt showdown exists, but its reach is limited and has its fsir share of issues. But even if you regard it highly, ryse crysis 3 and warface are definitive steps down from their previous work. Also they're massively struggling financially, not to excuse the port. I do agree they should've handled it themselves, it seems very obvious but they might be a reason unbeknownst to me.

This goes to show that it's not the tools themselves that make a game look great ( raytraced lighting, shadows, reflections etc ), it's the way those tools are used by the artists. The xBox version maybe technically superior, but the Switch version uses it's limited tool set with more creativity. It seems more visually balanced.

Not true. You and John are ignoring the fact that HDR can be turned off. When HDR is off, it looks similar but much better than Switch artistically. All the color, grass, and lighting issues on PS4/Xbone disappear when you shut off HDR.

Reminds me of Halo 2 anniversary vs original. Anniversary is obviously much more technically advanced, but the original graphics are so much more pleasant and lend themselves better to the actual gameplay by making it easier to tell what's going on. I felt similar seeing this comparison between Switch and Xbox One. Between this and Witcher 3 the Switch team at Saber is really flexing their muscles with that console.

Sure, for what it is and it's running on. If you play it handheld it looks absolutely wonderful considering that most mid-range phones in 2020 have more powerful hardware in them than the Switch. Nice and crispy, the screen is small with a low native resolution which the game matches. Problems aren't as noticeable because of the low res and screen size. The one area where it truly kicks the ps4 and Xboxes asses is it's color palette, which looks like the original (much better than the newer versions imho). In docked mode on a large TV though it looks very blurry and poor all around, like most 3rd party Switch ports in docked mode. It's not the ideal version unless you only want to play "on the go". There is no ideal version really, they all have drawbacks. The original PC version (modded of course) is probably the closest you can get to the best Crysis experience. It just still doesn't perform as well as it should given it's age and visuals.

Somehow, the switch version reminds me a lot of the original PC version. The smoke effect of the dead guy getting disintegrated looks exactly like the original, and that was changed in the remaster. Even the more washed-out look of everything reminds me of the PC version.

I absolutely agree and I only have PC and ps4. The other versions of the "remaster" just don't look like Crysis. Also although distant objects are low resolution and aliased, the attempts to cover that up with a slight blur and fog makes the atmosphere on the switch seem more realistic. Seriously the only good versions are the 2007 PC and the switch if you want a mobile version.

vexyxero Switch is using a worse Global Ilumination and runs on 720p on docked and looks blurry possibly because they used TAA. There is also a lot of pop in in the switch version but even with all these issues

I love how the Switch version handles exposure in a photographic sense. Especially how bright outdoors are blown out when observed from much darker indoors. Is it because the XBOX footage was captured in HDR?

Nope. There's nothing better about the Switch version. The problem is the HDR mode on PS4/Xbone is broken. In SDR all the negatives they have compared to Switch are null and void.

It looks like they used more of the original PC version as reference there instead of the downgraded crap on 360. You can see a lot of effect in the switch version that are missing in the ONEX version like the icing of the visor or the dirt on the windscreen of the car. Hell there are some shadows in the switch version where there are none in the ONEX. WTF

That's not what this is. There's clearly a significant amount of work put into this. Failure to focus on performance is the failure in this case I think, remaking the game wouldn't have been feasible for them financially. It's unfortunate that some details aren't as refined from the original, but they probably made a sensible technology decision.

I've noticed that those color flashes seem to be the voxel grids around objects used for the SVOGI in Ray-Tracing mode. I found that switching back and forth between modes, loading and reloading the level as you change it, seems to remedy the problem temporarily for the remainder of your session.

As with Alex's PC build analysis, this games remaster NEEDS to be a ground up rebuild on the newest Cry engine or at the very least built from using the original PC build to fix the baked in issues of the x360 and ps3 port. I feel this game, and the fans deserve better.

I was stating to fix the issues you need to rebuild the game from the ground up or remaster it using the original PC code to fix the x360 and ps3 ports baked in issues. I do not think this was a "quick and dirty" port of the game by any means. There was a nice amount of touches made to this remaster, but the flaws are obvious. Crytek did allocate from what Alex and John's trip may suggest a decent amount of resources to the project, but in my opinion the game absolutely should have been a compete rebuild period! You have the tech Crytek... build it right! The game and the fans do deserve it!

I'm kicking myself for not following John's Twitter account more closely. I bought Crysis Remastered for my Xbox One X on the day it came out, and now I can't even play it on the included modes, other than quality and performance. I had never seen ray tracing before, so when I noticed that as an option, I was very excited. I turned it on, along with HDR, and was greeted to images on the screen with the screen ghosting and the image torn into sections.

I’m assuming you guys are using properly calibrated pro monitors so the differences we see between the amazing Switch version and Xbox version is correct - cause I agree the Switch lighting actually looks more natural to me in most cases. Truly amazing can play Crysis on a portable :)

At best its better than the original console releases. However I think I will wait for Series X to play this. Patches should improve performance and fix bugs, but still need more power for locked 60 fps. Hopefully Crytek also has a patch to utilize new hardware.

The lighting and coloration on switch looks the best. Looks like they based the color palette of the xbox and ps4 on farcry:instincts . Super over saturated and cartoony. Really disappointing

Switch can't even go above 30, when the new consoles come out, you'll get a locked 60fps with this game and the game is being shown through capture footage, not a properly calibrated TV in person.

Indeed. My theory: for the original Crysis they had specific reference photos that the game had to look like - and in the case of the remaster they were probably just told to slap on technology X and technology Y and to "make it look better".

I am very happy the game came along when it did; if it would have released later I am afraid the new gen of consoles would have overshadowed this game and it might not have received this worthy amount of attention. It is nice to see the amazing effort placed towards this remaster on all versions. It is also surprising to see an RT setting in the top consoles. This is especially impressive when you consider how weak the Jaguar cores really are, which are complete garbage compared to the Ryzen cores available in Xbox Series and PS5.

5:35 I think you might have mistaken the shadow cascade switching for penumbra shadows, because this technique is only present in the "can it run crysis" preset on the pc, and the consoles probably couldn't handle it. Overall they are looking too sharp up close for the penumbra shadows.

9:50 that’s an error in the setup of the lightmapping on switch, and I’ve seen things like that before. The precision isn’t the problem, since that door shadow comes through fine with the light map resolution they use.

CryEngine 3 vs CryEngine 2, they probably saved a good month or two of work not having to upgrade the PC data. I mean, the results speak for themselves but you don't think Crytek released this game for anything other than a quick buck do you?

Yeah I think CryEngine 2 was just way too difficult to upgrade and port. CryEngine 3 is the better engine and was made with ports and stability in mind. Just sad, that the original wasn’t restored at least content wise
