20:20 it's so true! When I buy a new crystal, I JUST wanna know it's physical properties and if it is safe to put in water and such and all Google wants to give me back is stuff about healing crystals. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Fun fact related to that Science Couch question: quartz clocks are not only used in watches. Every modern computer, from microcontrollers to supercomputers, use quartz crystal oscillators as the clock signal that keeps them in sync and running. Your processor speed is based on the frequency of the quartz crystal on it. When you turn on the computer, a small bit of electricity is sent to the crystal, which deforms; when it "undeforms", that creates a voltage that acts as the clock signal. The clock signal is amplified and sent back into the crystal, looping the process over and over, creating regular voltage ticks that tell the processor and anything connected to it when to execute the next instruction. This is why basically any electronic device has an actual clock on it, since they already use a clock to run themselves anyway.

Every clock* needs an oscillator. And a power source. It gets interesting to think about every timekeeper you see. Most PC motherboards have a coin cell battery to keep the quartz clock running when the computer isn't powered. How does it work in your microwave? In your car? Most things use quartz crystals these days, but some plug-in devices will count AC power cycles and cheap, short term timers like in your kitchen or on some appliances still use mechanical balance wheels for oscillators. You can almost always hear this last type ticking during operation, like egg timers. *some things that display time aren't actually clocks. GPS receivers are antennas that by their nature receive time signals, so they can display the time using the clocks on the GPS satellites. Networked electronic devices can similarly report time they received from other sources.

Regarding quartz timekeeping: there is a property of timekeeping whereby the frequency of the oscillator determines the smallest unit of time you can measure, limiting accuracy. Mechanical watches are generally around 2-5 hz, while quartz are usually running 32,768 hz. Actual acoustic tuning forks were used somewhat commonly for a brief period as in the Bulova Accutron running 300 hz iirc, and atomic clocks are in the Ghz ranges. This is the main reason they are more accurate. And Ceri, it is actually the escapement that you hear in a longcase clock as well, the pendulum is the equivalent of the watch's oscillating balance wheel, both have escapements with similar geometries, but the longcase clock usually runs 0.5hz and has heavy lead weights, so it ticks loud and slow.

1964 is the Tokyo Olympics, Hank. In preparation they would have had opportunity to pitch a Japanese product to the Olympic Committee. I guessed the correct year also because Seiko is a Jpn company and I know when Japan hosted.

The craziest thing about golf tees to me is that they're made out of WOOD of all things! People made things out of wood in buckle-hat witch-hunting times. You're telling me it took them 400 years to figure out how to make a pointy little piece of wood that flares out at the end? I could whittle one!
