The Jeff Beck Group set the template for Led Zeppelin IMHO. Beck and Page played together in the Yardbirds. Beck released his Truth album nearly 6 months before this album. Both albums contained "You Shook Me" and think of Beck in place of Page, Rod Stewart in place of Plant and you'll see what I mean.

I think your PERCEPTION and ARTICULATION ratings are maxed out ;) I’m impressed with your thoughtful and seemingly effortless critique. Led Zeppelin will continue to evolve and surprise you. Going album by album is the best way to go, however I highly recommend watching some live performances to see them in all their glory. Jimmy Page, in classical terms, is the composer, conductor, first chair violin, and featured soloist, all at once… all the time. I look forward to more Zeppelin reactions, the depth, density and variety of their catalog is incredible!

Oh I forgot to say that the strange sounds in the centre sections of both “ How Many More Times” and ( on side 1) “ Dazed and Confused” are made by Jimmy Page using a violin bow on the electric guitar strings. Check out the colour video of Led Zeppelin, London 1969 to see how he does it on “ Dazed & Confused”. Or the much much longer 1973 video from Madison Square Garden in New York.

Led Zeppelin have so many musical influences - trad English folk, Delta blues, South Asian/Eastern, rock and roll, psychidelica. You name it. And they honour and are respectful of those traditions, I feel. You can take an album like this and then work backwards through the influences to discover a whole host of other great styles and musicians. As someone commented about Black Mountainside taking you to Bert Jansch, which would lead you to the folk-jazz fusion band Pentangle (which I also recommend you check out), and others.

The sessions were self-funded, and the group was without a record contract; but Page knew his new band would sell, and the production and instrumentation at the outset were much simpler than later on. "How Many More Times" interpolates some of the lyrics from the song "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" (written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays and first recorded by Jimmie Rodgers in 1957, which went gold and hit #7). The first stanza goes: . Well, when I was a young man, never been kissed I got to thinkin' it over- how much I had missed So I got me a girl and I kissed her and then, and then Oh, lordy, well I kissed 'er again

Great reaction! You do a wonderful job breaking the music down. Such an amazing album. Looking forward to your Led Zeppelin II reaction. One thing to keep in mind about that album is that it supplanted the Beatles Abbey Road for the number one album to close out the 60's (I noticed you're a big Beatles fan too). As someone once said Led Zeppelin was the last band of the 60's and the first band of the 70's.

The "listen to the entire album first" approach indeed works better with like.. concept albums as you already found out with Pink Floyd's Dark Side and will find out with The Wall or Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, where (some) songs flow into each other and the album is one entire story. Led Zep can be done by using the "song by song" approach. And aren't you a lucky one that their next album LedZep II is the absolute Mount Everest amongst their entire catalogue of Himalayan-sized masterpieces.

“Black Mountain Side” was nicked from a folkie guitar genius named Bert Jansch who was actually the originator of the whole British folk-baroque school, and a huge influence on a whole list of players up to the present. He’s worth investigating for any youngster who wants to know “where it all came from.” His album of instrumentals, “Bert and John,” recorded with his friend John Renbourn, is endlessly listenable, and a crucial underground classic. When an interviewer asked him when he was going to get around to suing Page he answered “I thought about it but then I figured fuck it, I can always write more music.” And he did.
@steelers6titles2 жыл бұрын
From the beginning, Page was featured almost as much on acoustic instruments (Black Mountain Side, et. al.) as electric guitar; you hear a top studio musician indulging himself. By the third album, he is overdubbing hugely, and getting all sorts of tonal qualities on different unplugged instruments.

What an incredible debut album from a band. This was the sound of the future of rock and roll as the 1960s gave way to the 1970s. That opening chord on “Communication Breakdown” is like a bolt of lightning crashing through the heavens. “Black Mountain Side” shows the influence of Indian music (thanks, George). “Your Time Is Gonna Come” has that ethereal organ. Heavy blues influence. Fantastic album and analysis, Crystal. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

No views. Posted 42 seconds ago. I never catch a video this early. John Paul Jones showing off his keyboard skills. It is a bit out of place on the album, but important for the duration of the career. Jimmy Page is an incredible producer fir drums in particular. They sound loud as hell because Bonham is beating the crap out if them, and not by Jimmy having manipulated that sound. I also love his acoustic guitar production. From Wikipedia, as I couldn't remember the other names. "Black Mountain Side" was inspired by a traditional Irish folk song called "Down by Blackwaterside". The guitar arrangement closely follows Bert Jansch's version of that song, recorded for his 1966 album Jack Orion. Jimmy dropped the vocals and slightly cleaned up the guitar work, but it is nearly identical. The Indian table work is unique though. Communication Breakdown is one of the songs that allow people to claim Led Zeppelin are a metal band. I had a who bitvwritten, but it was about You Shook Me and not I Can't Quit You Baby. Oops. Well, screw it. 6 months before the release of this album, Jeff Beck debuted with Truth by The Jeff Beck Group featuring future legends (and Faces) Rod Stewart on vocals abd Ron Wood on bass (later guitarist for the Rolling Stones). Jeff was upset that Jimmy and Zeppelin also covered You Shook Me, and better. And largely recorded on the Telecaster that Jeff gifted Jimmy back in the Yardbirds. The debut of Jimmy bowing hus guitar on How Many More Times. My friend Grant Langston would often close his sets with an original song that would end on that main riff here, except being played by a hard country (think Merle Haggard) band. Another lovely reaction. Have a great weekend!

“Though its the era before autotune…” Yes! And thus before vocals became robotic and thus sounding electronic generated, not emotional and fully human. If only we could ban the cursed things!

I love that pulsating guitar riff opening on Communucation Breakdown. It could've been the opening song on the entire album, imo. It's a great song to introduce new fans to the band with. It's just rock-n-roll without any excuses. How'd it get buried in the middle of side 2?! 🤔

Good Times bad times fits the bill for an intro to zepp though. That's as hard hitting as it gets, but yeah a lot of good material here.

True, it's a perfect example of a fast hard opening track that were on many albums in that era.

I would love to hear Crystal's review of David Bowie's "Hunky Dory" album from 1971. I believe it will become one of her all-time favorite albums, based on her taste in music from watching her KZbin music reviews.

I sometimes try to make a list of my favourite Zep songs. I start with this album and realise most of the tracks go on it and that it would be quicker to make a list of not my favourite ones, but that just seems rude so I give up.

On "how many more times" Jimmy Page plays with a violin bow on his guitar in solos bridges. This idea comes from Eddie Phillips, the guitarist of the Creation.

Maybe next you can try reacting to Cream which was Eric Clapton’s band he was in after playing with the yardbirds and before he started playing with the Beatles in their solo careers Their best album is probable Disraeli Gears

Not 100% sure, but I believe that Jimmy Page is singing backing vocals on the outro to Communication Breakdown. Which was the only time he ever did that.

Zepp's studio albums are ace but to get the full experience, you MUST listen to them live (at least in their prime: 69--75). If you ever have the time, I would recommend listening to the live album The Song Remains the Same or How the West Was Won, or BBC Sessions. Furthermore the bootlegs are usually great too. Cheers.

You got to love it when he does it over Rosie parts and the drums come in and then Jimmy Page does the guitar part that goes along with the drumming on you still have that down beat it's almost like offbeat or syncopation on our way Mana descends to that higher cord and then comes back down another hi-hats going The rhythms already starting while Roberts singing a little bit slower the hi-hat and the vocal part don't go together until it's the guitar part comes in it's really cool

Artfull study on a difficult task. This album is the yardstick by which so many will be measured . Try Paul's band on the run. Full of meaningful songs that are a joy to sing, lots of sunshine, birds., or 👧 with sugar and spice.

Nice job on my fav Zepp lp! However, I still prefer going thru the entire side before discussion/analysis, which is more important for concept albums such as Floyd's lps IMO... Thanx for covering the music of my youth; this one came out when I was all of 14.
