@@michaelrotch9773 you absolutely cannot blame Community for Yahoo! Screen's demise. Yahoo tried to take on Netflix/Hulu/Amazon but they were already too far ahead. If anything, Yahoo's acquisition of Community saved it from dying - for a short while. Yahoo had many other problems: it was browser based, much of its content was geo-restricted (meaning content wasn't released simultaneously in different countries), and it also had problems with advertisers. Yahoo Screen was a sinking ship and Community just happened to be on board when it went under.

I don't get all the people saying Joel wasn't hard enough on the politicians. Sure he made a little too many Chris Christie fat jokes, and some celebrity jokes which i'd let past since it lets the politicians laugh together for a little while(some good bipartisan laughter if you will), but honestly he was one of the hardest on the politicians second only to Stephen Colbert. If you watch any of these other comedians doing the correspondence dinners it sounds like all their bits went over review by the people they "joke" about or that'd be on some late night show too scared to offend anyone in fear of losing some viewers. Could he have gone harder, sure, but i think he had a nice balance of keeping people entertained and not turning against him but still bring up important issues that remind us of what hasn't been and needs to be done by our politicians. Things like marriage equality, our drone strike program, racism, the after effect of war in the countries we invaded, the deficit and so much more, i think he did a good job of putting them on the spot.
@anjani409210 жыл бұрын
Thumbs up! Good points. Helped me reconsider Joel's comments from another point of view. But something was off. What? I've watched all the correspondents dinner comedians. I think this guys problem was not ever getting audience to laugh WITH him. All the laughter seemed fueled by groans. That made this comedian a little painful to watch. In addition his delivery wasn't engaging. It felt like he was reading a list of jokes. Each more painful than the last. I'm a hardcore progressive, bleeding heart liberal, old school Democrat. Joel definitely skewered the pols and news folks I abhor. But I want to "enjoy" the proceedings. Laugh at, and with, the other side. I groaned and winced until the end of Joel's set. Ouch...ouch...ouch. But I loved noticing that the youngest folks in the audience, no matter what table, seemed to laugh riotously. That told me, an oldster, I'm probably a little out of touch with Joel's caustic wit. I loved Stephen Colbert best. He gets you on his side no matter how much "acid" wit he spews. Colbert is smart. He comes off as brilliant. Joel came off as a smarty-pants.
@lucasdavis19649 жыл бұрын
Anjani I see where you're coming from. I wouldn't say Joel McHale is as much a "smarty-pants" than he is a comedian who is at his best when he deals in semi-ironic remarks about pop-culture (like the show that he hosts "The Soup," which is pretty much one of the few watchable programs on the E channel). I wouldn't worry so much about being an "oldster" because I don't think you're unaware of the comedy on display here. What I want to know is who booked McHale to this kind of event. What made Colbert's stand up work was that he was a comic who focused on political events whereas Mchale get's his shtick from reality shows and tabloid blunders. He just wasn't the right guy for this job. From one bleeding-heart liberal to another, all I can say is please don't judge him off of this one video, he's a very funny guy (albeit very snarky) and a pretty good actor.

Here is a friendly guide to the WHCD (Obama and Trump era): 2009: Wanda Sykes. Pretty vanilla, but cool. Obama could do no wrong at this point. Rush Limbaugh jokes rocked. 5/10 2010: Jay Leno. Sucked. Will not be missed. Nobody cares about Leno any more. 2/10 2011: Seth Myers. Did a good job. On point. Good Trump roast that ultimately made Trump run for president, I bet. 7.5/10 2012: Jimmy Kimmel. Nothing special. About as agressive as his show. 5/10 2013: Conan O'Brien. Like Kimmel, but with a bite. 7/10 2014: Joel McHale. Totally underrated. Youthful. Love how he shows the audience their hypocrisy. 9/10 2015: Cecily Strong. Gets a bad rap, basically because she's a woman. Kinda blew it with the Aaron Shock jokes. 6.5/10 2016: Larry Wilmore. I think he totally rocked the show. Made everybody feel extremely uncomfortable. 8.5/10 2017: Hasan Minhaj. Did a great job. Spoke truth to power. Standing ovation well-earned. 9/10 2018: Michelle Wolf. The lady who broke the WHCD. Spoke the explosive truth and took the whole thing down with her. Her delivery sucked at times, unfortunately. 8/10 Earlier WHCDs: Watch Craig Ferguson (2008) and Stephen Colbert (2006). Ferguson did a nice job of giving a "foreign" perspective on the U.S., while not being a total Democrat dickhead about it. Colbert was simply legendary. Took the whole Bush administration apart.
