On February 21, 1965, civil rights leader Malcolm X was assassinated while giving an address to the Organization of Afro-American Unity in Washington Heights. Here is a 1963 interview with him and Berkeley graduate student Herman Blake. The discussion is moderated by Sociology professor John Leggett.

This is arguably my favorite debate with Brother Minister Malcolm. They all made good points and they all LISTENED to each other rather than trying to talk over each other. I’m Samoan-American and look up to Malcolm X. I’m Christian, but admire his devotion to his faith which guided him in life to stand by his morals and principles no matter what! I watched this as a 8 year old as a little white girl who'd been protected from the knowledge of racism until I was 6 (while being raised in a mixed neighborhood) when we moved out of Naval housing, moved south, and I went to public school. Then, I got a real education. (I thank my mother for protecting me so I could be shocked by what I saw when I was old enough to start consciously processing it.) When I watched this interview, it didn't matter that I wasn't on board with segregation or had a clue about the Nation of Islam--I just knew he was speaking the truth about the US society and the white power structure. (White people would only behave the way they did if they felt that they held the power. And we're seeing that continue today and worsening.) Malcolm X became my hero in this moment and his life in the couple of years before I died cemented that for me.

Anyone who has ever read the story of Malcolm X will understand and even empathize with his efforts in seeking to redeem the quality of life of the black man in America. Malcolm had a rapier-like brain with a monastic devotion in searching for a solution to this crusade and he couldn't be outwitted by anyone. His meteoric rise from a fervent preaching minister before local groups into a politically charged demagogue with a nation wide audience, could only in the end build under him a pulpit of martyrdom. If only along this personal road to Damascus, Malcolm had heard the word "temperance", the American Civil Rights Era would have been much less volatile. In this interview Malcolm brought up the subject of the Jewish people founding their own state of Israel as an example of what a people could do if they rallied together. Malcolm's comparative vision of a future black homeland, whether within the US or back in Africa was fine in principle, but practically speaking nothing more than a Utopian dream in some parallel universe. Within the biographies of those that form the history of Martyrology, the words "empowerment" and "self respect and dignity" can be found highlighted in Malcolm's. This is Malcolm X's true legacy to not just the Negro race, but to all ethnicities.

I don’t think people really understand….Malcolm X was greatly introspective at a time when change was needed. People now didn’t live through it…..getting into fights with white kids every day, being called the n-word, not being able to go to certain restaurants, certain bathrooms without getting beat up, being treated as a joke of a person….imagine the people who went through those things are still alive today….imagine the people who caused those issues are still alive today….imagine those people as parents and grandparents today and imagine people not understanding or appreciating the gravity of what he is speaking to….something that people refused to give…respect for a person because they are a person...that alleviates more barriers in race relations than sympathy for a person or efforts to get along with a person ever will….if you take away the entitlement or presumption of superiority you enter into a new phase of life where you can recognize the person next to you also has a story, also loves, is loved, has dreams, goals, hardships, successes that are meaningful to them as meaningful as those things are to you….you aren’t respected because you look a certain way, you are respected because you are a human being….there is not more you have to be for me not to intentionally harm you...than to be a human being…..but for other people, for them not to intentionally harm you they have to think you are extraordinary....they reflect on themselves as extra-ordinary…..when their behavior shows they are less than human and their mindset has become ordinary....not significant....no innovative or above the fray thoughts....just hate and rage....it's difficult to be that type of person and it's difficult to live in a society with people so hell-bent on being hateful.
