This was the old Athens International airport which operated for sixty years and closed in 2001. Olympic Airways operated a total of five 747-200’s. Two were purchased new SX-OAA and SC-OAB (shown) the three others were second hand units from Singapore Airlines. SX-OAA was delivered new in June 1973 and was sold to TWA in April 1985. It has been scrapped. SX-OAB (shown) was delivered new in Dec 1973 and was leased to Aerolineas Argentinas in April 1996, it was returned three months later in July 1996. The 737-200 SX-BCA was delivered new in June 1976 spent it’s entire life in service to Olympic Airways. It brings back fond memories of my father taking us to Greece each summer when we were kids and teens way back in the 60's and 70's! We flew into this airport many times on Olympic 707's and then 747's! We were on the Olympic Eagle 747 (shown in your video) nonstop from Kennedy Airport, NYC to Athens too! Unfortunately we couldn't save the first 727-200 adv Boeing constructed from that fate. For more than ten years, we struggle with the aircrafts left and other material (ground handling equipment, vehicles, documents etc) to create a civil aviation/Olympic Airways museum in order to preserve Greek aviation history with no success so far for reasons that no one can understand... The 727 is a -200, definitely old, 60's. That 737 is a -200 series, which are old, mid 60 early 70's, this one '73. The 747, is a -200 series, also '73. The one tucked in the corner is A BAC 111-215AU, '70's era... "The drivers seat" really?! Maybe you where to excited and a loss for words... Pilots seat or crew seats... "where the wheels go up in"... wheel wells for the landing gear... The "engines or at least what's left", these were nothing more than the engine inlet cowls. The "corner of the runway" This one ticks me off when people assimilate the WHOLE airport to one small function of the whole airport... The "runway" is where the aircraft actually takeoff and land, then "taxiways" where they move to the "ramp" or "tarmac" to the "gates" or "apron"...

Great video!! I have great memories of this airport I stayed in a hotel under the flightpath many years ago but boy was it hot!!! Its funny how there are no less than three different members of Olympic Airways' fleet still sitting on the apron, a 737, 727 and the 747 "Olympic Eagle".........it's like going back in time!! 😁

In November 1986 I flew on Olympic 747s from JFK to Athens to Nairobi using this terminal. Olympic put us up in a hotel for 2 days. I also recall transiting through the terminal in the 1970s and seeing bullet damage from the 1973 terrorist attack.

So the story is these airplanes where owned once by the Greek government but at some point they could not afford them because the tickets where very expensive and people didn't choose to travel that way so they begged ( literary) Onassis a Greek man that became a business man in USA bought the company and the few planes they had , brought new ones in and made "GREEK AIRLINES" the "OLYPIC AIRLINES" the most known and luxurious airlines in Greece and the world , at the time, in a matter of two years. He offered economical tickets and when traveling with Olympic Airlines ( the only airline in Greece) no matter the seat you choose or the ticket you paid you were offered drinks and snacks for free and also were served in pure gold utensils for long trips. Many people actually bought tickets just to keep the utensils and bring them home or any kind of souvenir really. When his son was murdered by his enemy's Onassis became ill and decided to give some of his assets away since he only had one son and he knew his empire was going to collapse after his death ( he had a daughter as well that he gave money and an private island called Skorpios that he owned in Greece that she sold immediate after his death, so you understand the reason he gave most of his assets away) . One of them was the Olympic airlines that he gave as a gift to Greece , his home country and a country he loved , which was a shame really because the Greek government wanted quick profit and sold the airlines immediately after his death which is now renamed to AEGEAN/OLYMPIC AIRLINES. They still offer free drinks and snacks but the luxury and wealth the planes and company had when Onassis was alive is long lost in history. The planes that you see there are the original ones from when Onassis owned the airlines and it was how he gave them fully equipped to the Greece. These planes made their final flight a few years after his death and then were left like that in various airports around the world , most of them in Athens ( since they couldn't fly because they didn't invest money in them) till the government found the next buyer. If you've seen a man ( he is featured in various YT videos) that lives in a similar airplane in a forest in America , he bought the OLYMPIC airlines airplane from a airport in China were many years ago the airplane flew but never returned due to the Greek government not caring or wanted to save this amazing company and looking for quick money.

Also this airport you were in is the old national airport that now relocated outside Athens due to that being near homes and causing noise pollution and stuff and is now legally owned by an individual that ones a football team in Greece and a few other things and has plans to destroy this place and whatever is inside and make it a casino. The man in the Fiat that came to you was probably just a civilian telling you that this is a private place and you can't be there but in reality lots of people go there and is actually a really good spot for new drivers to learn how to drive ( I learned there) so if there were two people it's possible that they were there for that. They told you to leave because you are foreigners and they didn't want you to get in trouble with the police probably language barrier and all that. But you really shouldn't be there it is a private property and it is illegal .
@joeb50807 жыл бұрын
95% of what you wrote is wrong, incoherent nonsense. I'm not sure where you heard all this BS. 1. The airline was founded by the state, sold to Onassis in 1956. You're right that Onassis is the one that changed the name to Olympic from Greek Air Transport Corporation. 2. Onassis *sold* the airline back to the state in 1973. He didn't "give it as a gift". 3. Airfares were cheaper *after* Onassis, partly because of the airline's acquisition of more economical aircraft like the 747 and 727. But also partly because the airline was subsidized by the state, and *that's* what did the airline in. 4. The airline was *not* renamed Aegean. *Aegean is a separate company that was founded in the late 80s.* 5. Olympic Airways went bust in the 2000s; the government drastically reduced and sold what was left of the airline, and changed it into a small regional carrier called Olympic Air. A group of investors bought the airline from the state, and further reorganized it. 6. Aegean Airlines bought Olympic Air from the investors, and uses OA's branding on some domestic flights, and some regional southeast-Europe flights. 7. The former airport won't just be a casino. It'll be a huge mixed-use development half of which will be park. The developers aren't "ruining" anything. It's a decaying old airport. As for the "Greek government not caring", actually the state put lots of money into the airline and couldn't save it, because it wasn't salvagable. A waste of taxpayer money. State aid for airlines is illegal under EU free-trade rules, anyways. The EU rightfully made the state sell the airline. And Greece is now served by *far better* air travel. Aegean Airlines consistently wins awards, let alone Astra, Ellinair, Ryanair, easyJet, and so on and so on. In the age of EU deregulation, low-cost-carriers, luxury business class seats on full-service carriers, airline alliances, and massive hub airports, Olympic was an airline stuck in the 60s and 70s. OA was neither an LCC nor a hub-spoke nor a business--oriented airline. It was still operating on the loss-making "tourists and diaspora" model that was a failure and a losing business model in the 21st century, and constantly needed Greek taxpayers to subsidize it. Good riddance. OA may have had the *appearance* of prestige, but it was a business failure, and the state couldn't save it no matter how much it tried, let alone that it's illegal to do so.

Just awesome! I'm so jealous, love love abandoned things and planes so this is the perfect combo. Just FYI: that 747-200 that doesn't look that new or that old was actually built in 1973 for Olympic so pretty old! Also, you don't need to climb the wing to access a 747 as just behind the nose landing gear is a hatch with a sketchy ladder to climb up. Of course, depends if it's locked, but my guess is open!
