Just recently I was filming some Amtrak trains in Albuquerque that were giving me tons of horn action. In this area of New Mexico all of the crossings from north Albuquerque to Bernalillo are quiet zones, but the engineers don’t really care. Whenever they see a railfan they honk the horn no matter where they are. Also I believe that Bernalillo was gonna have quiet zones but there were way too many trespassers so they just put speed restrictions for trains passing down.

This reminds me of people who buy a home next to an airport that was there long before their home was built. Then they piss and moan that they hear planes passing low overhead and start crying and screaming for regulations. Simple solution.If you don;t want to hear planes then don't buy a house next to an airport. Likewise, if you don't want to hear train horns then don't move next to a railroad. Otherwise you take what you get.

When I worked in Austin TX we would have to blow the whistle at pedestrians all the time in the middle of the quiet zones. The gates might convince drivers to stop but it only encourages the pedestrians and cyclists to go around. That's okay though, the FRA supports the use of a whistle in a quiet zone when there is an imminent danger that warrants the use of the whistle.

I agree 100% with this protest. Many people have been struck and killed by trains in my area. Many are kids who are walking on the tracks to go to school since the tracks pass right by their school. Also, I've seen 3 people almost get struck by a train, luckily the train blew it's horn and broke the rules, but still. More and more No horn zones are getting put into affect in my area and the rate of people struck by trains is rising. The railroads need to put an end to quiet zones since just because local residents don't want to hear train horns, more people are dying. Railroads need to think, which is better, peace for nearby residents or causing less train related deaths?

I understand your protest but i have a different point a view. I am engineer in France in SNCF and the horn is just used for the railroad crossing whithout barriers or unprotected and the accidents are rare. The drivers mentality and responsability is very important when the train hit car.... I often see vehicles cross the railroad crossing when the train coming, over the videos of the American trains and it is specific to the USA. But, i like the american horn and yours videos millenium! gcor rule 5.8.4 Whistle Quiet Zone- Within designated whistle quiet zones, whistle signal (7) must not be sounded approaching public crossings at grade except when: • Necessary to provide warning in an emergency. • Notified automatic warning devices are malfunctioning. • Notified automatic warning devices are out of service. or • The whistle quiet zone is not in effect during specified hours. A locomotive engineer may sound the train horn to provide warning to crews on other trains in an emergency situation, vehicle operators, pedestrians, trespassers or animals if, in the locomotive engineer’s sole judgment, such action is appropriate to prevent imminent injury, death, or property damage. Train crews are not restricted from sounding the horn when:• There is an emergency situation. • A wayside horn is malfunctioning. • Active grade crossing warning devices malfunction. • Grade crossing warning systems are out of service. • Supplemental or alternative safety measures are not compliant. • Needed for purposes other than highway-rail crossing safety, for example, to announce the approach of a train to roadway workers. All other whistle requirements remain in effect
@HughFSmith9 жыл бұрын
It's interesting to me that people are missing the big point here. EVERYONE is missing the point! I am a huge fan of railroading, I have been my entire life. The point here is, that with all the warning devices in operation, bells, lights, gates, etc. a "no train horn" crossing should really be a no brainier for any driver on the road. You would think with twice as much crossing equipment at a crossing, someone would be smart enough to know that if that equipment is active, (Lights flashing, bells ringing and gates blocking the crossing) then that should be more than enough to keep the crossing safe. Let's put the blame where it really belongs, on the stupid drivers who do not pay attention to all those warnings. Legally, no railroad, city, county or state is negligent if someone is injured or killed do to their colliding with a train. Remember, trains are on rails, cars are not. The engineer has no control on where his train goes, a motorist does. A mile and a half train traveling at 60 mph would require over a mile to stop completely. A car or truck can stop quickly. Everyone has common sense, or at least I hope they do so stop blaming everyone else for your mistakes and USE YOUR HEAD!!

Here in Germany the Trains almost never honk their horns except when you are stupid and stand really close to the rails, so why is there a problem

Hey Allen just a suggestion but try getting an auxiliary microphone for your video camera with a wind sock on it. That will eliminate most of that annoying background wind noise.

Bars come down, bells go off... We stop our cars. Then comes the horn. Driver awareness at crossings is supposed to be learned by the time we get our drivers lisence. Its in the manual! Be honest now, horns are an antiquated solution to undeveloped crossings. Nothing more...and definitely not needed when bars block the road. THAT'S your first warning, and the only warning needed, that a trains coming..
@TheScreamingMelon8 жыл бұрын
It's not for the cars it's for the pedestrians that go to the side of the bars. He made a whole video about it after someone was hit.
@Michael-ou4ph8 жыл бұрын
If you walk around lowered bars and are hit by a train, you're a full on idiot. Period. And the video you are referring to, she was wearing headphones and still didn't hear the horn. Soooo ya... If you're looking, you really don't need the horn. Have a good one, and look both ways before you cross the street or at an grade crossing.

By the way, personally, I love hearing the train whistles. I wish they would not keep banning them, but we live in an age of the spoiled kids. They cry if they don't get their way. I have no idea why train horns became such a big deal. The driver of a car is ultamitly responsible for his/her actions. There is nothing a locomotive engineer can do about that, train horns blasting or not.

Totally assenine! If Lakeland really wants to quiet the trains they should build overpasses and/or close grade crossings. Not only would that quiet the trains, the trains could pass through town faster. PS: Was it as hot in Lakeland on 6/7 as it was here in Jacksonville?

Milleniumforce (or other Americans who would like to respond), can/could you elaborate on why silent zones (which we do not have in The Netherlands) are considered to be so dangerous? (Prepare for a long elaboration on this subject down below) In my country, trains are not allowed to sound their horn for anything other than trying to avert imminent danger. When trains do sound their horn, people here usually tend to get the chills (at least I do) after being scared shitless (it's quite the uncommon sound to hear), because people know something is up. When the horn sounds longer for a second time, that's when there probably is a collision ahead. Whenever someone does get killed, it's usually because they made an error in judgement with an upcoming train. In The Netherlands this will usually only happen to you once as a person, and usually you will be unable to tell anyone about it, because our trains cross crossings at at least 80 miles per hour or at their maximum allowed top speed of 86 mph (around 140 kilometers an hour). You are saying that people with headphones on will not hear a train coming but the people that I know who wear headphones like, all day long, have it on at a volume they probably would be totally oblivious to a train horn (from which Dutch trains only have two by the way, and usually they are not activated simultaneously). Isn't this simply a matter of being totally ignorant about railroadcrossings? I see so many clips from railroadcrossings in America with trains sounding their horns allmost continuously and everyone still drives through the activated crossing (especially the ones with only warning lights as means of signalling). Isn't it much nicer to the people having had the "bad luck" to be living near a railroad (maybe with an extreme increase in frequency of passing trains) to not hear a train horn everytime a train crosses? Because clearly, in most cases, sounding the horn clearly doesn't help either.

Alan ive been watching your vids for a while now and for sure theyre great stuff all around. But come on now, a rail fan that doesnt love sound of train horn, is like trying to find an honest politician! Ive made it a point now for that past few months to give the wave or thumbs up to an engineer of an oncoming train, and the only occasional time they blow the horn is if my shorter and younger friend is with me. As for safety, yeah like some many things today we got to go back old school!

I am 28 I grow up in a small town in Michigan, and there is a busy rail line that passes though it. Trains blow there horns a lot day and night. It doesn't bother me, I been hearing it my whole life. I am use to it.

They're banning horns in my city as well, it's ridiculous. The city spent about SIX MILLION dollars to make crossings LESS safe to satisfy about fifteen citizens in a city of 354 thousand. I'm thinking of doing something similar on the day when the horns on all crossings go silent in my city.

You know what else hasn't been heard there and probably never again? Steam whistles. 1) CSX won't let steam on their railroad 2) Horns/whistles will never blow here again

Although I really hate the quiet zones (my hometown Tulsa, OK is a quiet zone), I think that on a really busy line of 5+ trains a day with their horns blowing can be a little excessive. Why not just reduce the horn blasts to just a few shorter bursts? It's just an idea, so don't bash/hate. I love the train horns! :) They save lives
@pisces25696 жыл бұрын
Justin Castleberry no because train drivers don't communicate like car drivers. In other words, for car drivers there is no code made standard by an organization that translates into a meaning. A blow of the horn could mean many things depending on context. On the other hand, train horns are used to communicate like Morse Code which is standard throughout the country. One pattern of horn sounds means something completely different than another pattern. You can't change the code to suit a town's needs
