In fact against knowledge of the Canadian Govt the Group was requested and sent to Cuba during the Crisis...but that was before the Iroquois were built. The Bonnie was still only at its min-life so it was expected to be around for sometime. just before the new frigates arrived were converted into command destroyers to augment the frigates. For those who are commenting about the current state of the fleet, rest assured that it's changing, though it will take another 10 years do to how long ships take to build. I work for the team responsible for designing the vessels for the Coast Guard, and we have a sister team at DND. After decades of neglect in both fleets, the government finally realized that ships aren't free and that you kinda need them if you want your waterways to be maintained and safe. For the CCG we have about 8 classes of vessel either in concept or being built right now, with probably 20-30 ships planned to be built. In terms of the Navy, from what I know, they have 6 of the 8 Harry DeWolf class offshore patrol vessels on the way (we get the other 2) with 1 already done, and the planned 15 (and possibly 5 modified version for large area air defense, and 2 Coast Guard ships) Canadian Surface Combatant ships, which are Type 26 frigates in essence. It would be nice to get some destroyers, though to be fair, these frigates are not to far off the mark, they are actually bigger than any previous destroyers in the fleet and other than their lack of ballistic offensive armament (not necessary these days with missiles) are functionally destroyers. It's worth mentioning that while I'm involved in the design of some vessels, I do not have any sway over what role the ships are assigned, what projects get created, or what funding is allocated. They simply tell us "Make a ship that can do these things and for this price" and we have to figure out the rest.
@_lime.3 жыл бұрын
@@tylerdalton3267 They came to my university looking for engineering students for Co-op. I guess my interview went well. DND has a lot of similar jobs you can apply for as a civilian, so you don't actually have to join the military. Stuff like designing ships, weapons, vehicles, etc... If ships in particular interest you then the major shipyards are also a good option, they handle a lot of the design process. Davie in Montreal is the biggest, Seaspan is in Vancouver, and then Irving in Halifax. We also work with a lot of private companies, for example Lockheed Martin has a facility in Halifax where they are doing modernization on our Halifax class vessels, or BAE Systems, who make the Type 26 frigate. For any of these things applying as a student or new grad is immensely helpful. They know you're a student so they don't expect you to know everything and generally once you've spent some time there, learned the ropes, and hopefully made a good impression, they'll likely be happy to offer you a job. They've essentially had a trial period to test your skills, so they'll be comfortable taking you on.

I had the honor of taking a tour of the HMCS Calgary in Vancouver B.C. when I was staying at my Grandparents after my father passed away in the 90's. Stennis CVN-74 where the HMCS Vancouver was part of our 'Strike Group'. Sadly that crew was seemingly unfriendly and rigid A.F. in Hawaii when I met many of her crew.. So whats the deal between both vessels? Command? Politics?? Bureaucracies??? I get it, we are all human and are subject to things we'd rather not have to deal with so not attempting to shame anyone, but It was such a polarized difference it makes me wonder to this day. Still! arrow64 64 it’s obvious you’ve never spent a day in uniform, let alone 25 like myself. My brother served in the navy for 20 years on both Halifax class frigates and the Protecter. My father, who was in the navy for 40 years, served on the old steamers and the 280’s. Modern warfare is a come as you are affair. It’s not the glory days of WW2. You don’t have time to build fleets of ships and planes and recruit and train soldiers. What you have on hand is what you fight with. Not to take away from our contribution in the war, but if weren’t for the US, (who simultaneously fought two wars on two fronts , and was called the “Arsenal of Democracy”),the war would have turned out much differently. We’ll never have 1 million people in the service or the 5th largest navy in the world again. During the Cold War and now, Canada was/is solely dependent on the US. This piece is a bit laughable as the Protector/Preserver and all the 280’s (our only destroyers) are decommissioned. Our navy consists of mine sweepers, a dozen frigates, and last I heard one civilian support vessel and 3 used British submarines and a I believe only one of those is in service at any time. After the Oberon class boats were decommissioned, the government wanted out of the submarine business altogether. We lack a sufficient number of surface ships to patrol our own coastline, let alone project a presence in the Arctic. This will severely hamper our claim to the Arctic. The Russian’s are building bases and planting flags on the sea bed in the north, thereby solidifying their claim to that territory. We operated obsolete fighters, with no replacements in sight. No attack helicopters and an insufficient number of military personnel. In short we cannot sustain a prolonged military conflict. Australia which has a similar population, invests heavily in its military and is far more capable. We have some highly specialized and world class units like JTF2 and the CSOR. And I’ve worked with good soldiers during my career and time in the Cdn AB Regt. However, ( and it doesn’t matter how many goofy hockey analogies you make) this ridiculous idea that “Canada the nice” is going to magically morph from a nation of people who say “sorry” to everyone, into some sort of badass fighting juggernaut if you piss us off, is a delusional fantasy. Shot over. Shot out.

I like the bullet-proof life vests/body armour with a life vest attached. Makes sense..but also the more protection, the more floatation you require too. As long as you don't end up with a 12' life raft popping off your chest haha

@kevincrosby1760 Жыл бұрын
@@peterhamlinhamlin8908 I understood the comment perfectly, understood the humor, and did indeed find it funny. In a nutshell, if you are on deck but are carrying no equipment, you have a CO2 vest that is the same size and shape as the fanny pack some wear around town, while biking or hiking, etc. The more gear that you are required to carry, the bigger the vest gets. When you reach the point where you have a hard hat and a tool belt full of tools, chances are you have a larger vest or are required to have that little "fanny pack" strapped on over the kapok life vest. The OP simply extended this concept to the point of absurdity in order to make a humorous point. Personally, I would have went in the direction of trying to navigate shipboard passageways, hatches, etc. while wearing a tool belt and required flotation/safety gear....Petty Officer Penguin waddles to his station...

I would not want to be a captain of a warship, the stress of deciding if I should fire or not has to really get to you. Imagine a small boat heading for your ship and you see two adults and two kids. What do you do when it starts getting closer?. Let's say you shoot and then find out it was just a family that needed help or you don't shoot and the people on the boat are suicide bombers with a boat full of explosives. The decisions you have to make have to be extremely stressful and if you make the wrong decision you have blood on your hands and maybe even prison time.
@zackwolfberg90694 жыл бұрын
When you decide to join the military you have ALREADY decided to risk your life. The captain should always (in a situation like that) NOT shoot. Besides why are you even in a place where you don’t understand their culture. And they don’t understand yours. And maybe we need to look at WHY is there piracy in that region to begin with. IS force and military the only option to deal with failed world policies...?

@@oliverfasola19 Shortly before this footage was shot (Around 2000) the US Military finally transitioned away from the 1911 in .45ACP. The process was well underway in 1990 when I separated. Ditto for replacing the M14 rifle for the M16/M4 rifle. Many reasons were given, but the inconvenient truth still remains. A certain segment of the population (previously prohibited from combat billets) joining the Armed Forces had problems properly handling and firing the rather large and heavy 1911 and M14. These weapons were promptly replaced with weapons more suitable for members with smaller frames, smaller hands, and less upper-body strength. Members, or members with no member. You decide.
