Bought a Used Grom? 5 Must Do's Before You Ride!

I bought a new used grom! Using my new grom as an example I go through five maintenance procedures you should do to your used grom right when you get it, or any grom for that matter in order to save money! Either way, they’re good skills to learn, and it’s my goal to demonstrate to you that they’re not that hard!
1. Wash Bike 1:58 minutes in
2. Clean Lube and Adjust Chain 2:41 minutes in
3. Change Oil and Check Screen 5:00 minutes in
4. Check and Adjust Valves 8:25 minutes in
5. Check Tire Pressure 11:25 minutes in
Tools/Parts Used:
right engine cover gasket (clutch side), set of feeler gauges, a basic set of tools including sockets, used oil container, a quart of Rotella T6, torque wrench, kerosene, Motul waxed chain lube, plastic bristle brush, crush washer for oil drain plug is optional.
Some Key Information:
Intake Valve: 0.004 - 0.001 inches Exhaust Valve: 0.007 - 0.001
Oil Capacity 0.9 liter (0.96 US Qt) at draining, 1.1 liters (1.16 US Qt) at disassembly
Clutch Cover Gasket part # 11394-KYZ-900
Oil Drain Bolt torque: 18 lb-ft (24Nm)
Credit: Luis Gomez - Thumbnail
Toolset I use: amzn.to/2Zfwc8X
Oil I use: amzn.to/2Zfwc8X
Torque Wrench I use: amzn.to/2Tg7GR2
Chain Lube I use: amzn.to/368PxtV
Chain cleaning tool I use: amzn.to/3bJR8Y0

just 6$ for oil here in thailand and do it yourself make it really cheap but with reasonable mechanic shop they charge 7$ for oil+labor really dirt cheap really.

I’ve been watching a lot of videos to figure out what to get as a first bike and I’m pretty sure I’ve decided on a Grom. I think it’ll be the perfect bike to learn on. I was planning on getting one new just because I’m not very mechanically inclined but with videos like this it has me thinking of checking the used market first. I’ll have to watch a lot more videos to see if I think I can do the work myself but I appreciate videos like these that give me a little confidence that I can do it myself. Even if I buy new these things will still need to be done at some point so I’ll need to learn at some point
@CTGromer
@CTGromer 3 жыл бұрын
I think you're right on the money with a grom being a great learner! Even if you don't buy used, maintenance will always need to be performed so familiarizing yourself with the bike is a good move, it will save you money too!

MrOlionabike I’m excited for you too! I should’ve made a video showing the actual cleaning of the oil spinner However, there’s a lot of good videos already out there, just give it a search. It’s tedious but doable. Make sure you have a clutch cover gasket and new oil spinner gasket on hand the day you start the procedure. Good luck, and thanks for commenting!

I would add fork oil and brake fluid to that list as well. Axles, wheel bearings, brake pads, etc. A bit further into it but just as critical. If you’re going to enjoy a motorcycle, you should be able to fully maintain it to ensure your own safety. And the Grom is the ideal platform for that. One more comment on the valve lash, you’re given the target, along with an acceptable range. So for the intake valve, it’s 4 thousandths plus or minus one thousandth. So 0.003” to 0.005” is the specified range. Same for the exhaust 0.007” target, with 0.006” to 0.008”. Cheers

Love your vids. I picked up a Benelli TNT135, love it. Then the GF took possession of it!!! Looking at a Green Grom now. Dunno if it'll be as quick as the Benelli, but there are a ton of things you can do to it. Aftermarket for the Benelli is kinda weak at the moment. Watched a bunch of your vids. We are both newbies and it would be nice for someone to explain all the different parts of the bikes. Keep up the great work.

I'm really glad you're finding value in the videos! Even cooler that you get to ride with your girlfriend, thats awesome. Aftermarket between the grom and the Benelli aren't even close, the grom has pretty much unlimited aftermarket potential. Good vid. I got my Grom new and had to do most of the stuff you mentioned in the first 1-2k miles (break in period). Also, worth mentioning, is how bad stock tires are.Used stock tires are probably even worse. I junked the "Vee" rubber for the Michelin City Grip tires. A very noticeable difference in handling and wet riding performance. To save some money I took the wheels off the bike myself and brought them to an indie tire dealer to do the hard part (mounting and balancing).

That’s a great engine, I’ve heard tons of great stories about it and Honda has used the same basic design since the 60’s or 70’s. FYI a valve adjuster screwdriver costs nothing and can be a big help.
@CTGromer
@CTGromer 4 жыл бұрын
I'll look into one of those screw drivers you're talking about. And yes, Honda HAS been using this same engine since the late 60's! It's in all the trail 90s and 110s, bomb proof tried and true design.

Yep, Honda sold a basic horizontal pushrod OHV motor in 1958, then in 1965 they moved to a chain-driven overhead camshaft, since then, specifications, ignition, and induction have changed, but design has remained the same.

3:34 and 4:18, I like to slip a piece of cardboard between the swingarm and the wheel during chain service so that the overspray of the chain cleaner and chain lube don't end up on the tire 👍

Don't have a grom but you just reminded me I need to do my Super Cub110i and ANF125i which I guess is pretty much same procedure. So yeah thanks, will use this video as a guide.

Its by far the best stock color scheme ever made (in my opinion) on the grom. You definitely scored! I'm big on the Zoom mufflers man, by far the best bang for your buck, and they're not too loud and give you good tone for the money. Good grab my friend!

My Honda Elite 80 (1985) crapped out last summer; I cracked off both exhaust bolts, couldn't fix it myself and I've been looking at Groms since. 80cc tops out at 35mph, so I'm looking for more top end for in-city commuting. I'm guessing a 125cc is topping at 50-55, so it's perfect in-city.....but a no-go for freeway. No problemo; that's what my K75C Beemer is for.

Loved the video I work on my bikes just like that... One tip... Your chain has a master link just like me ax1... Make your life easier... Unclip the chain, bucket, chain looped like a snake three nuts under it to give you space from the botton and fill with kerosene... Live it 10 minutes soap water and she is ready to rock... Clip it up and lube

Good luck! Find someone who has the bug to grab one of those ruckus's and I bet you'll do well when you sell it. Like the grom, the Ruckus is one of the niche colt following bikes. I found the grom WAY more fun though!

you don't have to worry about the battery or the wiring harness getting wet they are made for that some people ride in the rain. all harnesses should have water proof connectors with lil rubber inserts and the battery would need to have a puddle of water on top of it to connect the terminals together but it still wouldn't do much other than drain the batter because its DC power. the only place you don't want water is in the exhaust or the carburetor everything else should be fine unless damaged or altered and worst that would happen is maybe a short and would be fine once it dried out.

If you are going so far to check the valves clearance, go ahead and adjust them to the center of the range. Put the .002 feeler gage in and adjust to that. It is only a minor bit of aditional work.

Liking the positivity man. Thinking about getting a Grom myself. I’m a little over 200lbs, do you think it would be underpowered on 55mph roads?
@CTGromer
@CTGromer 3 жыл бұрын
Hey I appreciate the compliment, thanks for watching and commenting! I think it would be just fine-- You'd be able to get to 55mph no problem. a 14T front sprocket would help, and so would intake, exhaust and ECU re-flash.
