My week long review on the 2020 Honda Grom 125. I commuted on it in city traffic, some in town curvy roads, but didn't take it out on the highway as it tops out at just 62 mph. I put on just about 100 miles on it. Thank you Jay for letting me borrow your spare bike after your accident!

In the country that I'm living most riders are on 125cc auto scooters. I have 3 of those and recently bought myself a used Suzuki GSXS 150...19 HP and plenty fun on the roads that I need to ride. Young driver favorites are the auto scooters, Honda Wave (semi-auto) and the Honda MSX (Grom). My future bike is going to be the Duke 390 or a 300cc - 400cc twin. I used to ride 650's in the states.

So is there no test for a motorcycle in America? Here in the UK it's a long, expensive journey to get a full motorcycle licence. CBT, theory test, and a two part practical test. Just to ride a 125cc you have to do a days training (CBT) and it only last 2 years.
@cisium1184
@cisium1184 3 жыл бұрын
Every US State requires both a riding test and a written theory test. But it's important to remember that the US is a federal republic of independent States - in a lot of respects it is like 50 separate countries. Driver licensing and motor vehicle registration are done at the State level. Except for laws governing roads on federal land, there is no "in America" when it comes to driving or riding bikes. (It's a bit like the EU, or like how Scotland has its own Parliament and legal system. Except moreso.) Which State's licensure law applies depends on where you live. Some States require you to take a course and *then* pass the tests. Other States will give you a license as long as you pass both tests - whether you have taken a course or not. There are courses available in every State (again which may or may not be required). All of them are designed to teach to that State's riding and written tests. These courses are typically two or three days long, but you can find courses that last a whole week if you want. All the courses are designed to take you from never having been on a bike to meeting the license requirements: basically they are like the CBT with the Mods that you guys have - but all at once instead of in stages. The courses may be offered by the individual State governments, or by private companies licensed by the State. In most of these courses, the tutors administer the riding and written tests to the whole group at the end of the the course. Everyone who passes both tests in the course receives an endorsement from the course that they can take to the State Driver Services Office and get their license directly. Obviously, if you don't take a course (because your State doesn't require it) you have to make an appointment with the State to take both of the tests. Courses have really only become popular in the last 20-30 years or so, and a lot of older riders didn't take one. The vast majority of new riders take the course because it is a faster way to get a license, is safer, and is fun and pretty low stress. Another big difference with the UK pertains to the license classification. Unlike the UK's tiered-licensing system (A1, A2), I believe that every State in the US offers only a simple "M" class license. That means that once you get your M-license, you can ride any bike that is street-legal. You can ride a Super Cub if you want, you can ride a Triumph Rocket 3 if you want. There has been talk of tiered licensing in some US States, but not much has come of it. Regarding this, it's important to remember that many American bikers get their car license *first.* Learning to drive a car at age 15 or 16 (again, depending on the State in which they live) is kind of a rite of passage in the US, so many Americans have already taken a driving course and the tests for that, and then they take the course and tests for their bike license later. The exceptions to this trend are the dirt bike riders, who often ride offroad from the time they are little kids and then may get an M-license before learning to drive a car. Finally, the M-license is subject to renewal every few years, but renewal is just paying a fee. You're not required to take any more courses, although there are a lot of voluntary courses out there and they are increasingly popular.

@@iMotoTactic00L and thats the problem, fanboys will always buy stuff like this regardless. No it does matter, this season you could walk into any shop near me and pick up a ninja 400 for 4k. Thats a bikenthat actually usable, is better in every way possible, and cost the same? These are toys and will be prices higher as they are a niche but if they raise the prices they will further drive away people from them. Kawi had all these features on their bike besides the 5 speed and was cheaper than Honda now. The dash is vastly better and it has an oil filter and no starvation issues when popping up the front tire. My point is these bikes need to stay cheap to keep people interested and new buyers around or they will stand side to side with something like a ninja 400 and look at the grom and walk away from honda

you make such a good point for people just starting off and people that don't hold the skills just yet to do things on bikes. Start off with a smaller bike and train yourself on EVERYTHING. Then slowly move up in cc and go from there. Too often you see smaller people like yourself get a bike that is just simply too much for them. Not saying thats what you did but a lot of people end up doing that cause if you ride a motorcycle you must go fast! Start small and work your way up.

The Honda VFR 400, that's right Honda made a 400cc VFR which is surprisingly quick like a Honda 600c CBR bike. Unfortunately there aren't many in the US and Canada they were mostly sold in Europe. The 750 and 800 VFR were build using the same technology. This video is from HeroRR who lives in the US. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJqqdX2HhrCWoa8 - Enjoy! :)

Then you have to wait for another year to be able to go for another course to get class 2 licence which enable one to ride 400cc and above. Literally the government made it so difficult to get a USA equivalent beginner bike here. 3 years if u don’t waste any time. And we have high import tax and a bike ownership certificate which only valid for 10 years (costs abt 5k usd) . And for any bike it added up costing 3 times more than in USA. There's a thing I started practicing recently. Imagine duck walking the bike, but with only 1 leg... So my butt is scooted outside the bike, so I can flat foot with that 1 leg, then slightly lean the bike towards it to create this solid tripod thing with me leg and the bike and then just push forward or backward with that 1 leg when I need to. If I need to turn the bike, the bike is somewhat leaned over already, so turning that direction is easier. If I wanna go the other way, I just switch legs. Idk how well it'll work with heavier bikes, cuz my bike is only about 430ish lbs.

Got one for riding around London, loads of fun! Tyre upgrade is a must though, would also be good to get the suspension upgraded at the same time. Better bars also make it more stable and look way cool - have the pro tapers on mine with some domino grips :D

Great commuter ‼️ I have one of those it's enough to the small comute here in my country MOST of bikes are 125cc and the "go to for more power" it's the 250cc bikes above 250cc are more like a luxury vehicle than a need since our speed limit is 50 mph BUT I'm thinking of buying a Kawasaki 300EX Ninja for the aggressive looks and to be able to cruise easily at 50-60 mph, a friend of mine has a bmw F800GS and he can't maneuver and manage the heavy traffic as I do and all the extra power can't be used neither legally or safely 😅 I guess anything above 300cc on the streets is overkill (I'm not a motorcycle enthusiasts, I'm just someone who enjoys riding not racing)

Itsthe same in uk depending on your age. You need a group 2 licence, up to 16, after 16 you take a group 1 license. One is limited to 125cc 2 is limted to 250 cc Then a full licence you can ride anything providex you are over 24 years old. Or you take a direct access course and get a full licence tbat way.

As a rule (at least for old school riders like myself) I always count my gear position. It’s a mental thing I do in the back of my mind as I ride. Even if I have a gear indicator, I always do this to keep from glancing down or in an emergency situation I know where I am gear wise, for a quick escape or to shutdown quickly.

Wrong. Growing up in the state of Illinois, we were limited to 125 CC's. I think, maybe 50 years ago anyway. I believe they have raised that to 150CCs now.

Actually we have 3 different motorcycle drivers licence levels in Sweden. "A1" is 125cc "A2" is up to 500cc "A" is 500cc and upwards. (Its not that simple but pretty much, there are power-levels in kw) 16 years A1, 20 years A2 and 24 years A. If you get a license for A1 at 16 you can take a test for A2 at 18 and A at 20 but by then you will have invested like 5000 dollars on just drivers licences. Pretty insane. 😂
