I couldn't justify buying "Cthulhu Wars", but this I had no problem coming up with the money for. I can see them making other factions available in the future, so that you have more choices, even if there are only two players still. Thank you, Petersen Games!

I haven't even watched this video yet, but I'm already giving it a thumbs up! I hope this becomes a regular thing! To be quite honest, I rarely watch reviews by one person unless it's for a game that I'm already very interested in. I much prefer these discussions with two or more people, especially if I'm on the fence about a game. I find this format more compelling and really enjoy the discussions, so I've really missed Miami Dice ever since Sam left. More of Mike & Roy please!

Really cool that the upcoming editions of this will each have 2 unique factions and a new map, all interchangeable. Wouldn’t be surprised if down the road they released a multiplayer pack with a bigger map and maybe some rules tweaks for 3+ players. Mike asks if you need this if you have regular CW. I wouldn’t say “need”, but I’ll have regular CW at home for the spectacle and take this with me if I’m playing somewhere else. Thanks for the review, guys.

Do you think the 4 player version would benefit from bringing the decay marker over?

No. Because it causes issues for the Sleeper faction which has the ability to delay taking their turn until all players are out of power. I don't expect to see Sleeper as one of the factions they bring to duel for this reason. It also gets a bit wonky if High Priests are in the game where players can re-gain power and get back into the game by sacrificing them. Basically, if the decay marker were at 2, that ability to react by sacrificing an High Priest would be removed.

I will likely get this and add it to my big box. When playing two players, use this instead, but still have the miniatures and such, since all that seems to be the same. Just need a larger map in this format. Maybe a playmat is forthcoming? One can hope.

I’ve played Cthulhu Wars several times (a friends copy) and really enjoyed it. But I never got round to buying my own copy as the cost and size of the game was wayyyy to much to add to my collection. This version definitely fixes that problem for me, though I do wish they add more factions to this version too, I feel like only two factions in the game effects the replay ability of this game.

Other factions will probably come later as expansions. The two included factions are the easiest to play of the base game's factions.

Wish there wasn't such a demand for big bulky miniatures in games, drives the costs up. Sometimes I prefer the cheaper components and more barren art direction of military games to moderate costs.

@@pankakotakismegalomavropou3355 agree, using small minis like in Chaos in the Old World would have made the game more widely available/sold, or even wooden meeples or screen printed neeples like in Root would have worked. I cannot justify spending $200 on a single boardgame

I'm pretty much all in on Cthulhu Wars so didn't get this, but I'm glad it's available for people to get as it's easier to store and carry and much cheaper! It's a fun game for sure and lots of options with factions, maps, and independents, but this looks solid and great for those who want a fun area control game with the Lovecraftian theme that doesn't break the bank. I really like the sound of that decay system. It would vastly alter how I play my favorite faction (Sleeper), but a cool idea for 2 players. This sounds much better for 2 players than playing the original game with 2 players. I've never played CW with more than 5, I have the maps for up to 8 players, but like it most with 5, it's excellent with 4, and ok with 3.

I agree that Cthulhu Wars is best at 4-5 players. I grabbed Duel, because it's easier to get to the table. I could have simply printed off the rulebook for Duel and used my full game, but this is so much quicker to get to the table. I have to wheeling around a board game bag equivalent of a suitcase with normal CW. lol

But... Decay mechanic is litteraly Base game 2 player variant, no? Atleast when I played CW like 1-1.5 years ago - I found this exact decay rules.

Cthulhu Wars is on my purchase list but the price just a bit much now that this is out I think I'll have to go ahead and pull the plug as soon as I can figure out who has it or where to get it I'm assuming the manufacturer sells direct or hopefully so

I have not tried yet, but in bgg some people said they can play duel with normal game. So if that is true maybe there is no need to have both?

Most or the rules like change in doom via killing and decay marker are from Base game 2 player variant. So this version is just use a smaller map, but in original you could get a pretty small Map too, yeah, it maybe not optimized for 1vs1, but still pretty decent and this version is definetly more cheap than "big" one because of minis. So this is just cropped out version with very minor changes, but it serve it purpose. I'm only sad that they decide to put only two factions here

If you have the original game, you can play it with Duel rules. The only difference is that you play on a three player map.
