We ( myself Victoria Miroshnik and Dipak Basu) have analyzed this issue in our book, India as an organization, published by Palgrave-Macmillan. The thesis of Ayesha Jalal was wrong. Jinnah was recruited by the British in 1934 to create a new state where the British Army could stay to protect the Middle East from the Soviet Union and the sea route between the Suez Canal and Australia. NS Sarila, who was the ADC for the last three Vice-Roys of India, wrote that in his book. There are two others who were recruited by the British: Gandhi in 1915 and Ambedkar in 1930. British supported the Muslim League wholeheartedly from the beginning in 1906. In every riot, British police took the position to support the Muslims. That was obvious in August 1946 in Calcutta, then in Noakhali, and Chittagong in East Bengal. Pakistan was created by the British and Jinnah, Gandhi, Ambedkar were the British agents. Gandhi planned Pakistan in 1943. He sent his plan to Jinnah through Rajagopalachari, but Jinnah wanted a corridor through India which Gandhi could not agree with.

There seem to be so many excuses for Pakistan including the writing of its constitution. The very idea of a religiously fleshed out state is odious. It will rile Pakistanis if it’s pointed out to them that they share this distinction with Israel.

The truth of the matter, and forgive me, if some of you find my comments unforgivable, but the truth is partition took place because Britain wanted to ensure that its security interests in this vast country, in terms of military bases would not be compromised after withdrawal. The sceptre of communist Russia looking towards the Middle East beyond the Persian Gulf represented a vulnerability as far as the British were concerned, and so, India was carved up because well, it could be an important buffer that a third-party rather fancied. This is not the only example of this, if you look at Eastern Europe, there are so many countries that were "created". Africa too, its easier to infiltrate what was a province yesterday vs an enormous geographic monolith, it isn't an astute way to spread the risk. It just so happened that at the time, this move for a bi-national State corresponded with what some community unrest, but in hindsight, we'd have been better served to slug it out and move on. Instead, we succumbed to splitting India along religious lines, and well, I'd have gone along with it until Bangladesh was founded, which in my view negated the entire premise. Its a shame. So many of us have so much generational history and yet find ourselves extrapolated away, or sectioned off by an impregnable border. I'm pleased to hear Ms Jalal's viewpoint but I don't agree with it all necessarily. We so frequently fall for the trap of hatred and blaming one another, it's quite easy to miss the broader point, we lost out on a lot. Its bizarre, this notion that as a Sikh or Hindu you have to move mountains to go to Lahore, a city drenched in history, culture and significance for more than the adherents of one particular faith. Or that as a Muslim, we can't visit Lucknow. Everybody deserves a round of fucking applause, fuck it lets just carry on hating...

Very true. They wanted a military base in Balochistan close to the erstwhile soviet union and they used Jinnah to get this, because the british knew that the Congress would never forgo the sovereignty of an undivided India.

NS Sarila, who was the ADC of the last three British Vice Roys of India wrote a book on this matter. He suggested in 1934-35 British decided to create Pakistan where the British Army can stay in case the British got to leave India in future. They recruited three politicians of India, Gandhi, Jinnah, and Ambedkar among others to execute their design. In 1945 Churchill called a meeting how to resist the Soviet Union entering the Middle East. He thought that Pakistan would provide the security of the Middle East for the British.

There is a qualitative difference btwn Indian (hindus) freedom struggle and Pakistani side freedom struggle. Like Ayesha said M K Gandhi made the diiference. Here it was a mass movement earning for freedom but in Pakistan side , it was more an elitist movement. This is also thd pivotal reason for nation building after independence. While it was quest for nation building in India, over there it became power capturing.

1947 - Assembly of 300,000 Khaksars in Delhi to Overturn British Rule When Allama Mashriqi called for 300,000 Khaksars to assemble in Delhi on June 30, 1947, the Government not only fast-forwarded transfer of power, but also imposed section 144 in Delhi and formed police pickets on all entries into Delhi. There were standing orders to arrest the Khaksars entering Delhi. In this photo, policemen are conducting a search of a Tonga in Delhi. According to the Khaksar circle, the overthrow of British rule was around the corner, but Muslim and Hindu leaders were directed to accept the partition of India before June 30th (which they did). These leaders ruined the pride of the Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and others for not conquering the Indian sub-continent’s (now Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh) freedom. Pursuing a transfer of power also speaks loudly to the fact that these leaders did not have power in the streets.

Subhash himself formed All India Forward Block, and his Communist ideals are very well alive in Forward Block although they are very irrelevant today because of the militant hindu nationalism... But to say that Sugata Bose is nehruvian is blasphemy. He is a socialist just like Subhash himself. 1. If Pakistan is not a failing state what is she doing in America? 2. The history of Pakistan begins form 14.8.1947 before that everything is Indian history and even now. 3. The sum total of the Pakistan demand has lead to its creation it could not have been any other way. 4. The Isaeli's bought the land form the Arab's so they paid for it. But the sate of Pakistan has got it for free + 300 mln Rs equivalent to a dollar at that time+ the Navy and Military plus some charity from India. They just didn't get the land. It's very flawed to say that they just had got land, they are getting water for free. Their loan for dam was paid by India under the Indus water treaty. 5. Religion cannot be a basis of a state, Bangladesh has proved it. If, it is true than she should not remain in America. 6. Just as the Muslims have the right of self-determination the Hindus to have it too.

By your logic the history of Republic of India began a day after the creation of Pakistan, bottom line prior to the independence of both nations their was the artificial construct/prison that was British India, once this gargantuan prison unraveled, partition was inevitable....And Gangetics/Deccans need to refrain from making false associations with Mergarh, Mohenjandaro, Harrapa, Taxila, Gandhara and Kashmir, these are the heritage of Pakistan, land of the historical Indus Basin (Cradle Of Human Civilization) with its immense 9000 yr old urbanised history.

Its ridiculous, funny and idiotic to even mention that Pakistan was not created in the name of Islam. You open up any speech of Jinnah, his meetings with congress/ British. If you cant read/listen to that, just look at country’s flag for God sake 🇵🇰 But Jinnah also specifically mentioned on record that equal rights for minorities as well. 1- If we take her logic, Israel 🇮🇱 was also not created in the name of religion. Since there are more jews living outside Israel than inside it! 2- If Pakistan was not created in the name of Islam, why only Muslims were migrating to Pakistan and not Hindus and Sikhs! 3- There are more Pashtuns in Pakistan than in Afghanistan. So now what to do! 4- Punjabi is more frequently spoken in Pakistan than Urdu. Since, Punjabi population is more in number. So as per her logic, make Punjabi your national tongue. You simply do not define/set your ideologies based on numbers! 5- Lastly, if we do consider her argument for a second. Has she accounted for all the millions of muslims that were butchered by Hindus/Sikhs while migrating towards Pakistan. That would have certainly resulted in a muslim numbers boom for Pakistan. Talking about 2050, it would have been a multiplier for our population

Example is in turkey. If you have a lot of control and popularity within the population, that will limit what the army can do. Another thing is after you won over the population, you can court marshall, and arrest members of the army if you find they are interfering. That will further consolidate your claim as a tough leader. You can also pass a referendum, however thats only if your popular with atleast 50 percent of the nation. However there will never be coups in Pakistan anymore, because the genrel public will not allow another one, they dont want another dictorship, so they will trust the democratic process

Madam, no amount of whitewashing will do to hide Jinnah's crime of partitioning India which resulted in the killing of millions of people on both the sides of the border. His call for Direct action in 1946 ignited the powder keg and resulted in the mass killings in 1947. In contrast Gandhiji went on a fast unto death in Calcutta and literally brought the riots to an end within a week. Then he went to Naokali on a peace mission with his band of selfless followers from village to village on foot. Where was Jinnah, sorry, Mr.jinnah, did he at least issue a statement to halt the killings? He was egging the Punjabis to turn on each other and when the wholesale killings broke out he was busy negotiating the renting out of his mansion - flag staff with the U.S. ambassador. He did not even open his doors to muslim refugees. Did he ever utter a word of remorse for the loss of lives, the rapes, the pillaging that followed the partition. It was the British who played the biggest part in the partition of India. They wanted a client state bordering South-west Asia and the then Soviet Union and who else will fill such a perfect recipe except, jinnah. Further, the British wanted to reward their lackey who collaborated with them unabashedly, especially after 1940, when the Congress & all nationalists were clamouring for freedom. Remember they would have settled for the Dominion status in 1940. But the British did not hesitate to deny even such a modest concession even when their very survival was at stake. But jinnah did not bat an eylid to be the humble camp follower of the power hungry imperialists. No wonder that the lackey was rewarded with his pakistan. Did he ever give a single lecture against the British imperialism during his long career? He was a camp follower of the British imperialists and his successors are the camp followers of the U.S imperialists. Lastly, madam Jalal, you should have more intellectual integrity to call out the imperial machinations of the British, who currently happen to host you, indefinitely.

If Jinnah wanted a Muslim majority Pakistan it is obvious that Urdu Speaking West Pakistan and Bengali speaking East Pakistan has to be carved out of India as the seeds of inability for Muslims majority can not have other communities has to complied with or else at a later date West Pakistan will create for East Pakistan. So it is logic for Hindu Maha Sabha to solve the future problem. So why HMS can't be held responsible for division of the country on religious lines

The problem with Pakistani and Indians is that they are unable to understand that a book is a book and particularly a research-based book is a document that reflects the point of view of its author in the light of his inferences. Inferences of an author may be wrong or maybe right. An author spends too much time in research so he/she in reference to commoners, in most of the cases has better knowledge and understanding. When the afresh author emerges and keeping in view the point of view of the previous ones, evolves a new theory, the old and older ones are discarded at once, this is unfair. Research is a continuous process particularly in History, it's a never-ending topic. The tragedy of History is that it is interpreted in the light of a specific era. The authors are projected for different reasons, purposes, and motives. The western authors have poor rather rubbish ideas on certain issues but due to global western domination, they are predominant as compare to the Eastern authors. Also, keep in mind older times of Historians are a better source but in respect to modern times, they are irrelevant. For me, every serious attempt at research is highly appreciatable.

The struggle for Pakistan is rather misleading. The people who are not from the Indian subcontinent can be fooled easily. One Indian doctor from Pakistan army who was persuaded to stay back as they needed him very badly.Ones on Pakistan army function they were singing a song ,hans ke liya hai pakistan lad ke lange Hindustan. They used to ask him we hope you dont mind.Later around65 he came backto India. Instead of taking over India, they lost east Pakistan for which we are very sorry.

Why waste so much time defending what is indefensible? Pakistan is a democracy ruled by Army. The narrative of Pakistan is what the Army wants at the moment.

Zia died because of MUBAHILA challenged by Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, the 4th Caliph of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community to whom Zia wanted to arrest in a false case of abduction and killing of one Aslam Qureshi who is still alive. He was an Ahle Hadis and considered All Sunnies as Mushrikin.

After listening to the lecture my respect for the organisers is even more lower than the speaker. How could they let such ranting pass of as an intellectual deliberation. Every problem of pakistan can be traced to india , and every discussion on pakistan's pathetic state of affairs needs to be counterbalanced by a tirade against BJP / Hindutwa etc. She spoke about the poor state of muslims in India as reported in Sacchar committee report. AT LEAST THERE IS A COMMISSION TO LOOK INTO THE PROBLEMS OF MUSLIMS BY GOVT OF INDIA. In pakistan the hindu minority has been made near extinct to 0.5 percent of population . After partition it was around 18 percent or so. The poor lot of muslims in India are due to two reasons 1. They start from a very low base (They are all converts from lowest caste of hindus , meaning they were very poor, same with hindu dalits who did not convert)2. Their ANTIPATHY towards secular modern education , and flocking to MADRASSAH (yes india has about 200000 of them ) education , which teaches arabic , urdu and LOT OF ISLAM , hardly a curriculum that will lead to job or training and prosperity. PS : it was pathetic to see her husband Prof Sugata Bose roll over and did not correct her misrepresentations

The long list of invidious comments here shows the prejudice which the Indian leanings are still broiling with. Her religion is not the question but what she is saying needs to be listened to --objectively. But that is not something the jingoistic mindset can ever achieve, perhaps.

Now Muslims in India can understand why MUHAMMAD ALI JINNAH Got Pakistan for Muslim. if BJP remains 10 years more in power then all other minorities understand that. Pakistan zindabad

Pakistan gets 5.7 gdp growth rate(2016) near to indian 7% . Indian compare their country with Pakistan . However 1970 china and india reformed their economies china is super power and india an other africa of hunger and poverty. Besides 6th terrorist hit country on the Earth . India rejected seat in security council and nsg membership . It failed to win big role not in Asia but even in south Asia. No big achievement except 2 aircaraft carriers and mars mission . On the whole india is icon of hunger.
