Since the 1896 Olympics, our sport has been known as Weightlifting. After World War II, powerlifting came to be contesting the bench press, deadlift, and squat, but this is a different sport in its entirety. A weightlifter competes in the sport of weightlifting, a powerlifter competes in the sport of powerlifting, a bodybuilder competes in the sport of bodybuilding, and so on.

I am 47 years old. I been in the gym 35 years. I'm 6'2 and I weigh 330 pounds. CT Fletcher is more than a weightlifter he is a beast. I tried his ten sets of ten on the benchpress and it literally gave me the workout of my life. It was amazing. Have to take off a few weeks from training due to a recent injury, diabetes and blood pressure problems. On pills and injections for the above. I can start training again in July and after a few weeks of maintenance it's back to the CT Fletcher Program.

I don't see how it's an insult to say someone is not a weightlifter when they were clearing referring to the olympic lifts... It's like saying CT isn't a strongman. I love CT, but what a lot of you don't understand is that the term "weightlifting" is used predominantly by the community to mean participation in the Olympic Lifts. True, the common definition of weightlifting is as CT stated. But the "sport" of weightlifting is specifically the olympic lifts-clean & jerk/snatch. So I have no idea if the guy writing tweets, etc. was trying to be rude/harmful, he was just probably coming from that background. P.S. ISYMFS!

I DO believe he has some kinda other issue, though to be responding to random comments by people without even real photos on their profile. Also, he always says "Twinkie eating" or "couch potato" when he addresses a negative comment. Hilarious. It's not fat people questioning this dude, it's other weight lifters. Mayhap he doesn't realize that? We are fat, we don't even really care if you use steroids or not etc. Why would we comment on that? @hectormandarin11 жыл бұрын
He's a weight lifter (or weightlifter or weight-lifter if you prefer; it all means the same thing). There are different types of weight lifting, body building differs to power lifting but they both involve lifting heavy things to acheive their goal. It's like saying that someone who does marathons isn't a runner, a sprinter is a runner or vice versa; they are BOTH runners, just different types.
@nitratebuster11 жыл бұрын
I love CT but im so disapointed in his attitued on this I just did what he said to do LOOKED IT UP and it told me what as a pro stregnth athlete already knew here is the first hit when google searching " weight lifter definition " weight lifter Web definitions Olympic weightlifting, also called Olympic-style weightlifting or weightlifting, is a sport in which participants attempt a maximum..weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates..
@RatedMTV11 жыл бұрын
agreed, but the clean and jerk and snatch are olympic lifts and, this does not relate to CT, but when it comes down to it, i can accept that part of my comment was wrong, for example, weightlifting means the lifting of heavy weights in a prescribed manner as an exercise or in athletic competition. CT was a weightlifter for competition, he still lifts heavy weights as an exercise, true or false?
@LearningSpanish199211 жыл бұрын
The comment was just saying CT is not an Olympic weight lifter. CT was a powerlifter. Two different sports. Olympic weightlifters do c&j snatch etc, powerlifters do, squat, bench, deadlift. What is the disagreement?
@LearningSpanish199211 жыл бұрын
Weight lifting does not just mean you lift weights, its category of strength traiing that seperates powerlifting, oly lifting and strongman and bodybuilding. Does doing a bodybuilding split make you a powerlifter? does olympic lifting make you a bodybuilder? Seriously the dude in the comment said He respects CT, He was responding to another comment, not dissing CT. A good example is a kai Green quote; "I will never be a weightlifter, I am primarily concerned with the contraction of muscle"

It amazes me that you're a professional strength athlete and you don't know the difference between the strength sports, and what's even sadder is that the majority of the commenters don't either. It's not an insult for somebody to say you're not a "weightlifter" if you don't compete in the snatch and clean & jerk, because it's not your chosen sport. here's a breakdown of the 4 main strength sports: funintelligenttraining. com /know-your-meathead
@RatedMTV11 жыл бұрын
also, i do bench presses, deadlifts, squats, and one rep maxes, that does not make me a powerlifter, i also do the clean and jerk and the snatch, does that mean i am not a weightlifter?
@TheLonexartist11 жыл бұрын
A weight lifter lifts weights to get stronger, relieve stress, escape boredom, a weightlifter lifts weights. A body builder builds their bodies to amazing and "perfect" sizes and shapes. A power lifter only lifts heavy weights at a fast pace. They are not in it to build their bodies or spend hours lifting weights. They just want power and strength.
@jmhanson0211 жыл бұрын
What I'm trying to figure out is how you exclude all other types of weightlifting. Yes, the 'sport' of weightlifting is the olympic lifts, but that does not mean that other types of lifters aren't weightlifters. After all, what do you call CT, a weight mover? Weight Pusher? He lifts weights, therefore, he is a weightlifter in the same respect that a person who runs 5 miles 5 times a week is a runner, competitively or not.
@L0Kiification11 жыл бұрын
Weight training is a common type of strength training for developing the strength and size of skeletal muscles. It uses the weight force of gravity to oppose the force generated by muscle through concentric or eccentric contraction. Weight training uses a variety of specialized equipment to target specific muscle groups and types of movement.Sports where strength training is central are bodybuilding, weightlifting, powerlifting, and strongman, Highland games, shotput, and discus throw.

Meaning of 'Weight Lifter' reffers to an athlete who lifts barbells. So yes CT Fletcher by definition is indeed a weight lifter.

I'm a personal trainer and i teach people who are weightlifters in the gym, i teach powerlifters, i have the qualofications to tell you that powerlifters only complete one repetition for competition, weightlifters complete multiple reps to benifit their physicality and their muscular strength and size. the clean and jerk and snatch are powerlifts and olympic lifts, they only require one rep per set, ct is not a powerlifter or olympic lifter, he was in the past, but now a weightlifter.

to be perfectly honest he is not really a weight lifter. Yes he lifts weights but he is not what we call in the fitness and sport community a weighlifter. yeah i know what it says in the dictonary and how long he has been doing his thing. If he is " weight lifter" then all fitness guru can call themselves weight lifters. It's common knowledge that people who do olympics lifts are called weightlifters because of the technical aptitude it takes to do olympic weightlifting.

Nobody doubts how strong you are. It's not hating to say you aren't a weightlifter. The sport is called weightlifting, not 'Olympic lifting.' The world championships are called the 'world weightlifting championships,' not the 'world Olympic lifting championships.' You wouldn't watch a high school 100m and say they are doing 'Olympic sprinting,' would you? Lifting weights (two words) is different from weightlifting (one word)
@lukeadamson1211 жыл бұрын
that's quite a lot of assuming you just did there. weightlifting - snatch + clean and jerk. weight lifting - resistance training etc. when CT says he's a weightlifter, he means that he lifts weights, to avoid confusion he should acknowledge that he doesn't do weightlifting (implying the sport of weightlifting) and state it as resistance training. there's no shame in that, the guy is a beast.
@RatedMTV11 жыл бұрын
so what your saying is that, if one person disagrees with your opinion on the matter, they are a "soft minded" person, i believe the phrase is "practice what you preach", on a serious note, do you work in the fitness industry, are you a bodybuilder (i'm not), are you a PT or any kind of instructor, if you don't know the facts, your argument is an opinion and not a factual statement.

A weightlifter is just that, someone that lifts weights. And CT is definitely one. I lift for power, but I'm not a power lifter because I've never entered a power lifting contest. If I lifted to look like a body builder, I would not be a body builder because I haven't entered a body building contest. I don't question other men about such things, I do what I do, and he does what he does.
@TheRealAbraxas11 жыл бұрын
I was just about to say that, 1 thing you forgot to mention is that not only do they not compete in cleans or snatches but they don't even incorporate them into their workout routine cause they're dangerous (ie: you could fall over or hyperextend your knees, or any sort of thing, olympic lifters get hurt alot)
@bugkill1sf11 жыл бұрын
Why even try to make the point about CT being a weight-lifter? He is a weight-lifter because that is what he does on a regular and it is part of his life. Being a weight-lifter is not just about competitions or what specific exercises you do, but more about how one incorporates weight-training into their daily lives. That is what a weight lifter is and there are a great number of people who fit that bill who are just regular people.

Weight lifter (2 words) implies weight training, which is not the same thing as the sport of weightlifting (snatch and clean+jerk). CT is not a weightlifter because he doesn't compete in that particular sport, but he can be called a weight lifter because he does weight training for other reasons. It's a very subtle distinction.

There's this guy who won a Heisman trophy and went on to a great career in the NFL, so he's definitely a great rugby player. That's exactly what your argument is. @ArakkAttack11 жыл бұрын
Words vary depending on their context. There are plenty of guys down at my local gym who are weightlifters in the general sense, but no, not in the Olympic sense. To try to define weightlifting and narrow it down to that specific semantic field is just stupid, that's like saying only players on the WTA Pro Tour are tennis players.
