I want power steering wheel n my 1812. I’m glad I watched this video cause I wasn’t aware of the axle swap. Nice job!

Thanks! The power steering swap was a bit of work but I know it will pay off in the long run.

Beautiful tractor. Didn't know about the intake issue, maybe that's why my past 416-8 developed a surge. I'll have to watch the 520-H. Onan's are just great industrial motors, I'm really glad I was able to rebuild two. The sound and power is worth the price of parts.
@MichaelTJD604 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. Well worth the money to rebuild one instead of replacing the engine with a newer v-twin. I'm not quite ready to rebuild one myself just yet, but I've got enough parts laying around just in case.

Hey Mike, just found your channel. Nice cub! I have 4 now 2 narrow 2 wide, 102, 104 upgraded to 12 hp. 147 and a149. Love these little tractors, have owned a dozen, only reason to sell one is to buy a bigger one

Thanks John! Sounds like you have a great collection. I owned an 86, 129, 882, and 1811 in the past...would like to get my hands on a red 782, 982, and an Original one of these days.

Coming right along. I am still trying to get my 582 painted. I am getting excited to get the 582 done so I can start on the 982. The power steering is a nice option. I am going to put a 3 point on my 582 down the road as well, Just have to find one at a decent price. That sucks after all that work and then the plug strips out. Thats usually the way my luck goes as well. At least it was a easy fix.

@Nimbus Nimbus III I may have to look at that. I agree 500.00 is a lit of money for a hitch setup.

I've had to pull it out about 4 or 5 times over the course of this project, but it doesn't bother me too much. When you're doing a custom build, the parts aren't always a perfect fit.

Looks great Michael. I just got 782 and I know nothing. The fun begins. What tires d you have on the back? Thanks, Greg
@rosslicitra5662 жыл бұрын
Michael, Great channel. Can you tell me about the front tires on your 782. I like the raised ribs
@MichaelTJD602 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ross. The front tires are Vredestein V61's, 170/60-8 size (metric equivalent of 16x6.50-8). They are actually a hay implement tire but have become a popular choice for garden tractors in the last decade or so. They are 6 ply so they are very durable, and they allow for smoother steering (less friction) and better handling especially in soil.

Really appreciate your videos. Lots of good information. One question. Why would you use a power steering column from a John Deere 318 instead, as you said in your other video? Would it bolt right up? I really would like to add power steering to my 782 as well.
@MichaelTJD602 жыл бұрын
The 318's ('84 and newer) use the same 5-port Ross steering valve, and Deere still sells the parts to rebuild them as well. The 300 series are far more common and easier to find parts for, and probably for this reason the steering columns can be bought much cheaper from a Deere than from a Cub Cadet donor. Some parts guys want $250+ for a column from an 1872/2072 or similar, which is insane compared to what a good used column out of a 318/322/332/420/430 can be bought for. It should bolt right up as long as you use the triangle-shaped bracket from an 1862/1864 like I used for mine. My main reasoning for not using a 318 column in this project was simply because I wanted to use as many OEM Cub Cadet parts as possible.

Looking good buddy! can't wait to see it putting in some grunt work. Is that the dealer name stamped into the frame on the right side?
@MichaelTJD604 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's the original owner's name, he carved it into both sides of the frame. This tractor was sold new at Hines Equipment and spent its whole life in the New Paris/Bedford area until I bought it in 2018.

I put a tube in the rear tire of my 1860 and the valve stem is hitting the brakes. I noticed yours are on the outside, wonder if mine could be switched around?
@MichaelTJD604 жыл бұрын
The valve stem should be on the outside. Cub Cadet wheels were factory installed in the "wide" offset position as opposed to other tractor brands because the "narrow" offset would not clear the brake rotors.
@MichaelTJD604 жыл бұрын
If your wheels have the valve stem installed in the "narrow" offset position, I'm guessing the wheels are off a different brand of tractor. As far as I know, Cub Cadet was the only brand that factory installed their wheels in the wide position.
@robwright43984 жыл бұрын
You are correct about the wheels being from another mower. I picked up the 1860 and a Simplicity from the same owner. He must have switched the back wheels, they look the same except for the valve stem. Thanks for your information
