Finest music on earth PERIOD! This is what I used to listen to during middle and high school in my portable CD player. Giraldilla, Rapsodia and Antiguo is his best work!! I wish he would come back to his roots and play these pieces in this era with modern recording equipment. That would honestly be a dream for me! Saludos desde Wisconsin!

Any cuban drummer you'll see with Gonzalo is going to be on this level. Gonzalo's music is so, so deep (and in a deeply cuban way) that his 'sidemen' are highly inspired and challenged to go to the ultimate degree.

Barreto stands out like no other drummer I've ever heard. Saw him with this quartet in the Bay Area some years ago. He and Rublacaba seemed to elevate each others playing. Brilliant. Perhaps they've gone different ways, but I would love to hear that they are working together again.

is a nice blend of american style of drumming mixed with afro cuban rhythms a lot is taken from bata drumming put into a drum kit so when you mix the two is very powerfull Julio is in another stratosphere like many good cuban drumers.like rodney barreto, raul pineda in his earlier years was like this too i think thery are from around the same year in la ENA national school of arts in Cuba.

I first heard Julio in a CD by Gonzalo Rubalcaba. I really couldn't believe what this guy was doing -- an incredible mix of rhythmic lines, dynamics and... MUSIC! Well... this is one of the very few videos that one can catch Julio on KZbin. And I thank you, oloddo, very much for uploading it. Now I know that Julio's magic is REAL!

I was in Habana when they played this with the sextet...Horacio (el negro) Hernandez was about 17 and it was like this too! I'm working on posting some of that concert.

Oh my god please post that content! I have never had the pleasure of seeing that sextet live. I saw Gonzalo live at Lawrence University in Wisconsin but it was a trio with Ignacio Berroa and Armando Gola. Still a fantastic show!
