Pasteles have a learning curve unless you were having them since the womb. Also, I've had a hundred different alcapurias and pasteles and to me, they don't always hit the spot. There are as many different recipes for PR food as there are dialects and families. I'm sorry your first experience wasn't the best.

It is pretty cool, all the different ways Spanish cooking translated across Latin America, including Cuba and Puerto Rico (as well as the more familiar Mexico for most Americans). You can see the similar threads of culture, but also the regional differences in ingredients and seasoning. People can say there's good and bad with the history of the Spanish empire, but there just is what there is today in the present... and I just have to appreciate all the really good food out there.

My sister makes delicious pasteles...with yucca/platanos for the masa, awesome meat mixture and wrapped in banana leaves. I helped make them a few times and it is a labor of love. She also makes awesome tostones. She hasn't found a restaurant that makes decent PR food, yet. Home cooked is the way to go.

Yes go to Puerto Rico, the restaurant food looked good but I don't know why Puerto Rican food in puerto Rico taste better over there or then again depending who makes it,I don't know if it's where things come comes from and it depends who makes it too,but for some things you do have to acquire a taste too because I'm surprised you didn't like the alcapurria, unless they made it wrong, like greasy and not the right root vegetables I don't know anyone who doesn't like Puerto Rican or Dominican food I always say they are like our cousins in culture.

I am Cuban who grew up in Miami, so Cuban food there is very similar to what my mom would cook for us. But I live in Georgia now and I yet to find a good authentic restaurant except one place in Marietta. It is primarily because the ingredients either are not available or they are too expensive. I suspect that is part of the reason for Puerto Rican food.

I am Cuban and my wife is from Puerto Rico. In fact we are visiting her family soon. My wife won't go to a Puerto Rican restaurant outside of the island. There is a huge difference on the island. I love alcapurrias on the island. Did yours have meat in it? That is kind of a necessity in my opinion. I also don't like pastel. It tastes weird to me. And yes arroz con gandules is awesome. My wife makes it all the time. The secret is the sofrito which my mother in law makes for us and we store in the freezer. And I had chuleta Kan Kan on the island and had the same reaction you did. Not very healthy but I indulge whenever I am on the island. You should definitely take a trip. If you want, I can give you placed to go to get real authentic food and isn't a tourist trap.

Pasteles probably is an acquired if you haven't grown up on them, I love them. Oh, there's so much more. I don't think you can get good Puerto Rican food at a restaurant. You need a home cooked meal. The best food I had in San Juan was at the street vendors!

You have the reactions I’ve had most of my life despite growing up with these foods in NY. (Home cooked, Puerto Rican restaurants aren’t prevalent here). Believe it or not, I couldn’t tolerate arroz con gandules until adulthood. The exception is chuleta kan kan, which I first heard of in PR in 2020. That I like. In short, most things are good, but not alcapurrias or pasteles. Try mofongo.

umm yeah there's a big problem especially in Florida as Cubans and Puerto Ricans don't really mix all too well. I think its some kind of rivalry or something. But seriously try to hide the fact you are Cuban in these areas as the Puerto Ricans will call you out on it and start arguing with you.

@@sneakyracerpr Alcapurrias - we ate some from a "kiosko" on the side of the road near where El Yunque is. Absolutely delicious, with ground beef in it. Trifongo - we had it at a small out of the way restaurant called La Casa de Mamá I think on our way back from Las Quevas de Camuey. I don't think that restaurant is there anymore, but I lovedit, stuffed with shrimp. Chuleta Kan Kan - I have had it several places and I love it although not very healthy

Everyone makes it differently and it has different tastes. It's like the different tastes of pizza. It's the same/similar ingredients, but it depends on how the person makes it and the amount of seasonings to create it. I love pizza, but there was one person who put too much basil in it and it ruined the whole dish. So keep trying out more Puerto Rican dishes because of the variations in flavor.

Hay sitios... y sitios. but wait... are you tasting that on US...? Sorry, in the island of PR is another story.

Lots of weird things I saw in the food. Restaurants are not the place to go eat Puerto Rican authentic food. Why? Because behind that restaurants ownership I'm pretty sure is not a Puerto Rican. Puerto Rican food is eaten in local rundown poor hoods in grandmas houses and the country side Lechoneras. Those Alcapurias looked they had no meat, we call them ciegos porque es Todo masa y no carne o sabor. They didn't look crispy, more like soggy. Los pasteles looked so pale unless it's made of yucca and the taste is different from the plantain ones. It looked like it had no meat or ingredients inside. Best recommendation is go to a grandmas house, go to the country side (not tourists restaurants) avoid metro areas and try real Puerto Rican food! I have Cuban, Dominican and Colombian friends and I never eat in the restaurants. I go to their houses (when invited lol) and try their homemade food. Fresh, Authentic and Delicious!
