Cubs-Pirates, Aug. 2, 1993 (innings 8-9, 2 more ejections)

Derrick May drove in the final run of the ballgame on a sacrifice fly that scored Mark Grace to give the Cubs a 12-10 lead in the eighth. That held up as the final score, but not before two more ejections in the ninth, bringing the total to six for the game. Pirates outfielder Lonnie Smith didn't agree with plate umpire Charlie Reliford's third-strike call and was tossed. Then coach Bill Virdon, filling in for ejected manager Jim Leyland, followed Smith out of the game. But Virdon had to coax Smith to leave the dugout. The umpires wouldn't resume the game until Smith and Virdon left. It was a fitting end to a wild game at Wrigley.

Watching Cubs baseball on WGN is very nostalgic for me. I grew up watching WGN in Hot Springs, AR, which is Cardinals country..and we also had TBS(Braves), and the Cubs and Sox were always my favorite growing up.

This game, on August 2, 1993, was "quite a ballgame" as my mother put it. I heard all about it from mom when I got home from driving hack all day. Saw the highlights on the WGN News later in the evening of 08/02/1993.

I thought that was hilarious. If you missed the game here today,(as they are) then(those of you not watching this broadcast, listen up) you can see it replay again later tonight on Chicago Sportsland. During commercial break he started explaining to viewers about the commercial breaks and the reason for the advertisements they’re viewing.

This was so special... and MLB let it go. Made the Cubs a national brand. I'm a Reds fan, through and through, but always had a soft spot for the Cubs. Ryne Sandberg and Andre Dawson were my favorite players as a child, and I went into broadcasting thanks to Harry Carray. Still a Reds fan but absolutely zero connection to the Cubs nowadays.

When I lived in Denver in the late 80s to early 90s, I totally enjoyed watching the Cubs on cable out there. But then came 1993 and the inception of the Colorado Rockies. So I didn't see as many Cubs games after that. For the record, I grew up in southern NJ as a Phillies fan!

I remember this game like it was yesterday! Hey, thanks for putting this up sir! Much props to you man. At 2:50 I remember being LIVID at Bautista for even attempting to throw. All he had to do was look up once right before picking the ball up a few steps before. Quick look up….no throw type of play is what little like 10-11 year old me thought! Boy I was hot. 😂
