This is a Racor 490-RAC-01. It comes with a pre-attached S3277 gasoline filter, which is 10 micron, but you can also spin on the 2 micron S3228SUL which is better suited for these engines.
The original fuel filter in this 1986 M1008 CUCV is leaking and needs to be rebuilt. The original fuel filter base has a connection for the "Water In Fuel" light on the dash as well as a heater connection that warms the fuel up. For these reasons, I will keep and rebuild the original fuel filter base. In the meantime, here's my spin-on conversion build. My favorite features of this particular setup are the built-in primer pump and the fact that the mounting holes on this filter base perfectly line up with the original holes and can be mounted without having to fabricate anything. Even though I want the original filter base back, this setup would be perfectly fine to just leave in the truck forever.

Really enjoy your videos dealing with the M1028. I am getting one myself in about 2 weeks (M1028). I was wondering if you could tell me the part number for the inline fuel anti drain valve that you installed? I have read that fuel drains down in the factory line and it causes a hard start situation (common issue from what I have read). Thanks again, I am learning so much from your videos!

After looking at Racor’s filter line..l it seems to me that the appropriate (cheap.. no primer button) assembly for the 6.2L diesel is the RACOR 120AS. With R12S, 2 micron, 15gph filter element. The 245R2 (with primer) also would work, but at twice the price of the 120AS.

Actually, you can use this base and just spin on the Racor S3228SUL. I describe this in the video details. This base just came with that 10 micron filter you see but the S3228SUL that also fits is a 2 micron. Check video description.

I looked into this filter and filter base and it’s for gasoline. I don’t know if it makes a difference. The 245R2 has a primer and it’s for diesel.
@RocknusUrbanCamouflage

The differences are that the one I used is rated at 10 micron and the one you speak of is 4 micron, but the gph on mine is twice that of the one you are looking at, hence my decision to go with it. Mine is also a temporary fix as the original filter will be going back in.

Probably 4 or 5 micron filter would be better and you can get those to fit too. Again, this was temporary and original filter base is going back in after rebuild. If you use this 10 micron and worry about it, add a basic cheap plastic inline filter.

@Rocknus I just purchased a new fuel filter housing unit. Any ideas on the best way to plug the small hole that is behind the Fuel Pressure Sensor, just above the words Sensodyne? One KZbinr used a Washer and JB Weld SteelStick.
@RocknusUrbanCamouflage
@RocknusUrbanCamouflage Жыл бұрын
The JB Weld/Washer trick is the way I've seen it done too. Honestly though, these things find numerous ways to leak. I replaced mine with a NOS unit and it lasted a month before it started leaking. Didn't even have the fuel pressure switch installed on this unit. Still leaked. I went back to my spin-on.

@@RocknusUrbanCamouflage I ended up purchasing a new Fuel Filter Assembly from Hillbilly Wizard. John said the ones they sell are already plugged up and there should be no issues of leaks from that hole. On the flip side I was able to find a New Fuel Pressure Sensor that goes into the old/original Fuel Filter Assembly. They’re only $20 and the guy has a ton of them in stock. This would be ideal for anyone who wants to rebuild their existing one. Just wanted to let you know brother!

I put a spin on filter on my 1985 m1009 cucv. Never had a fuel prime issue with the original filter set up it just kept leaking. Now that i put a spin on filter on it doesn’t leak but it keeps losing prime. Do i need to install a check valve?
@RocknusUrbanCamouflage

Hi Brandon. I like a check valve on my CUCV, but if you are losing prime, you have an air leak somewhere and should definitely locate that. You can temporarily install a small clear line on your IP to monitor for air. I've cued up this video to show you what I mean... kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4W7emCPdrF7etU

Im just at a loss as to why this all started after i put a spin on filter on. I used fuel compatible thread tape on all the fittings. I have triple checked everything i touched to put the spin on filter on and nothing is leaking or loose. I guess ill have to pressure the system by the haynes book and see if i can find anything

Very cool. I’m having an issue with my truck where it won’t start without ether after it sits for a day. I replaced glow plug controller and solenoid and check the resistance to glow plugs. Everything seems to be working fine. When it does get running it sputters and I have to give it gas to keep from stalling, but then it runs and drives fine. Leave it for 1-2 hours and it starts right back up, but park it overnight and it’s a no go. I’m thinking I have air coming into fuel lines.
