I was making plans to return it to the store where I purchased it and then listen to my hubby say why don't you just buy ground coffee. lol! He thinks grinding our own beans is silly but I think fresh ground coffee tastes 100 times better which is why I got our own grinder instead of grinding beans at Costco (I hate those community grinders). So, I decided to do some research and found your videos. I watched the how-to with Minute Rice video as well and it is genious! We use very dark French Roast brand of very oily beans. After about 1-1/2 months of use (my bad), it started jamming and it would shut itself off. I know that must be a safety feature to protect the motor but it was frustrating. You are so right that the limited fold out manual doesn't explain how to dissasemble the grinder. It is now working perfectly and I promise to clean it weekly! Thank you!
@helpfulnatural4 жыл бұрын
I agree! Freshly ground coffee tastes so much better than pre-ground from the store. I never used the community grinders either, who knows how often they get cleaned, (if ever). It also seems silly to stand there grinding an entire bag of beans all at once when just the amount you need should be ground right before brewing. Just stuff I learned from watching Seattle Coffee Gear's channel. :-) And like any other appliance, coffee grinders need cleaning too to keep them running smoothly. Oily beans can cause a build up faster than other roasts due to their oily/sticky surface. I'm so glad my video helped get your grinder up and running again! Thanks for watching! :)

I don't know how well the flat plates will work for grinding herbs and spices. I use a small blade style grinder for spices which has a propeller type of blade that will chop and pulverize them. The flat plates in this coffee grinder uses pressure to squeeze the beans as it spins. I'd be interested to know how well it works for you. Just a hint, you may never want to use it for coffee again as the onion and garlic will leave a residue. Glad my video was helpful to you. Thanks for watching!
@donmargiepulicicchio59556 жыл бұрын
We don't even drink coffee lol, his dad bought a Keurig so he hasn't used it in a long time and thought this might work for us. We just started making our own seasonings but can't find a blade that works right. Maybe I need to buy a spice grinder, I'll try this and see how it works. I'll let you know :) and just a FYI, we dried shiitake mushrooms to make mushroom powder and put it in ground beef....best burger ever! lol
@helpfulnatural6 жыл бұрын
Yum! I finely chop Crimini mushrooms and mix it into my burgers too! It adds so much flavor and keeps the burgers from drying out. Here is the spice grinder I use: www.amazon.com/KRUPS-Electric-Grinder-Stainless-3-Ounce/dp/B00004SPEU I've had it for years and it works great! I use it for grinding peppercorns, flaxseeds, chia seeds, etc... I also use rice to clean it since you cannot get it wet which will ruin the blade/motor. It's also available everywhere including Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond.

If they're oily, they're very old. Coffee is only fresh for around 1 month past roast, and should be okay for a month or so after that with muted flavors (I have some 2 month old Kenyan beans right now that still have the characteristic berry flavor, but much milder compared to a fresh roast). If they're oily, they're past that and probably don't taste like much other than generic stale coffee. I know fresh beans are expensive, but if you know where to look you should be able to find something that isn't so old it's oily.
@helpfulnatural4 жыл бұрын
@@doctorwhofan2563 Actually, oily beans are those that are roasted longer for darker roast/flavor profiles. I used to roast coffee beans so I am familiar with the process. Older oily beans will lose the sheen as they go stale, not the other way around. Lighter roast profiles generally tend to not have an oily sheen even when they are fresh.

There is a link here in the comments to another of my videos showing how to use Minute Rice to clear out old grounds and coffee oils from your grinder. After you follow this video for opening it up and brushing it out, run some Minute Rice through and brush it out a 2nd time to get all the old oils out that turn rancid over time, ruining the flavor of your coffee. It works great! Thanks for watching and hope you get your grinder going again. 🙂

I laughed when you said “weeks or months” - we’ve had this grinder since we got married in 2007, and I’ve never disassembled it to clean, just wiped out the bean holder and the ground coffee cup! I found this because I was thinking I really should see if I can clean it better. We usually grind medium roast, so that’s probably why we haven’t had issues so far in 13 years! Great grinder.
@SmallSpoonBrigade4 жыл бұрын
You've either been lucky, or you've been grinding course grounds, because I had mine for a few years of grinding for espresso and eventually it just died. After removing the collection cup, the entire chute was plugged with coffee grounds.

The user manual that comes with this machine is sorely lacking in info on how to disassemble it for cleaning. I'm not a mechanic but I know that the burrs in coffee grinders must be cleaned somehow. One day I just decided to turn the bean hopper beyond the coarsest setting to see if it unscrewed and sure enough, it came apart! Thanks for watching! :)

Just wanted to say thanks. It's 2024 and we've had this model for - oh - 10 years or so. Lately we've been finding a lot more powder in the output. So thought maybe it was time for a replacement but I thought maybe cleaning it first would help. So ya, video was very helpful. But I have to say my wife and I LOL'd when it was mentioned to clean it once a week or so. Ma'am we haven't cleaned it in 10 years. This model is a beast that just keep on kicking. To me the burrs look worn so it's more pulverizing the beans instead of grinding (cutting) them. But we'll see how it goes. Again though thank you.

Glad my video was helpful. I have another video showing how I clean this grinder from beginning to end. Here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZvQkJmjdrGZitk Just an FYI, it isn't just old, stale coffee grounds that get caught up inside but also coffee oils that go rancid fairly quickly which can spoil the flavor of your fresh beans. This is a very dependable little grinder but does need cleaning now and then to keep it going. Thanks for watching.

Thank you! I have a slightly different model CBM-18C, but this helped tremendously! (on mine, the top burr isn't connected to the hopper) I've had the grinder for about 8 years and I wasn't even aware I could clean it, TBH. What happened was that it would power on and the blades moved, but no beans were ground. Took it apart and cleaned all the built up grinds and oils, and it worked!! Maybe I'll get another 8 years...lol.
@helpfulnatural6 жыл бұрын
Oh my! That is a long time. :) I'm glad you got it going again. Where is the upper burr attached if not under the hopper? Oh...do you have the conical burr grinder? I have that one too and I think it's much easier to clean than this one because the upper burr can actually be removed from the grinder.
@nollypolly18696 жыл бұрын
That's the one! It's indestructible and still produces grinds from powdery fine espresso, to super coarse french press. It's the best grinder I've ever owned.

Thank you for posting this - I've been using a small pastry brush to clean mine, but the toothbrush is much better. One other thing that I've found that helps is a can of compressed air with the long straw (like for computers) to clean around the bottom burr a little better - I just hold it over the sink and spray that area.

Ok... so I'm definitely appreciative for helpfulnatural's video. I didn't even know that the sucker came apart like that. I started hearing noises from the grinder that I never heard. And I wasn't getting an automatic grind from the bar button. I'd have to hold the thing down. After viewing this video, I did go through the steps here. As best I could. I used a regular size toothbrush. At any rate... not much improvement achieved. That being said... this was the first time I cleaned the thing in more than ten (10!) years. I'm tripping out. I can't believe that helpfulnatural does this every week. Obviously, one should not go ten years without maintenance, but I think you can stretch out the maintenance time a smidge. These things run about $60. So I just replaced it. And for the record, I drink coffee everyday. I've run this things every morning at least once for more than 10 years. Some time off for vacation, but this is a workhorse instrument. Is it the fanciest burr grinder out there? No. But it's got to be the pound for pound champ.
@helpfulnatural2 жыл бұрын
I agree that it's a workhorse coffee grinder. I clean it once per week when using dark, oily bean as they tend to clog it up faster. I have another video showing how I run Minute Rice through, then brush everything out. The rice cleans out all the residual grinds that get trapped inside. Maybe you could do this once per month?? 🤔
@helpfulnatural2 жыл бұрын
One more thing, coffee beans contain oils which when left inside the grinder can go rancid in a matter of weeks. 🙁
@PatrickFaySeattle2 жыл бұрын
@@helpfulnatural yeah, I get you. I should have been a little more clear. I'm a truly avid coffee fan. Thus a burr grinder in the home. I do think I have a decent palate. I have served as a wine director at a few restaurants. And have worked in food my entire adult life. That makes a fella persnickety about his coffee. I generally only drink light roasts. Ethiopian, preferably. Yirgacheffe, or Sidama, are my favorites. After drinking these for years, it's hard to drink a dark roast. Even an impeccably/responsibly sourced bean from a small local roaster. It just tastes burnt. My reason for chiming in here is to hopefully, be helpful. Your video is exactly what I needed. I just feel that once a week maintenance is pretty high in frequency. Although my evidence is anecdotal, and slightly hilarious, ten plus years without cleaning simultaneously absurd and exceptional. I shouldn't have done that. You showed me how to do what the machine needs. I think monthly, or even bi-monthly, is a fine preventative maintenance and upkeep schedule. I do like the idea of the rice grind from time to time as well. Great stuff all around. Thank you very much.

I'm so glad the video helped you with your coffee grinder! I have another video showing how I clean this model using dry Minute Rice and all the steps mentioned in this video. @bensebaugh60178 жыл бұрын
On the question about why not include this in the manual.... I'm going with Cuisinart wanted him to throw it in the trash and buy another one. I've been more than a little frustrated with their food processors these past few years.
@helpfulnatural8 жыл бұрын
Yea....and yet they sell thousands of these coffee grinders, it's a very popular model. I think most manufacturers would prefer to have customers just give up and buy a new unit rather than try to fix or maintain the one they have. I've seen this happen a lot with the Ninja appliances too. I also have a Cuisinart food processor that I used to like quite a bit but I rarely use it at all anymore. I don't like the plastic bowl and now the blade assemblies have been recalled due to the rivets giving way and the blades shatter into your food. I registered for a replacement blade a little while ago but have had no confirmation from Cuisinart that I'm on the list to receive a new one. No surprise there, unfortunately. :/ Have a happy Holiday! :)

I roast a lot of dark batches and the beans are oily. The machine became almost unusable -- I cleaned what I could see but that wasn't enough.
