This time on MonarchsFactory you can laugh at my struggles with pronunciation as we find out that King Arthur was a hairdresser in the Welsh legend of Culhwch and Olwenfrom the Mabinogion.
The source for this story is Lady Guest's translation of the Mabinogion (a second edition physical copy).

I love how the porter at the gate sounded like an old English Victorian police officer from a Sherlock Holmes novel, best piece of characterisation I've seen in ages.

It humanised someone who has always seemed a bit silly in the original text. However I couldn't help thinking that Dael was avoiding trying to pronounce his name, Glewlwyd Gafaelfawr.

Your impersonation of the dialogue bewteeen Culhwch and his stepmother is legendary. The whole dialgues section of this video is just hilarious to bits. The old crone who swears there is no heir... well except this son that she forgot to mention. Not to mention the comments upon the story ("I'm no doctor buth this would be my guess"...). You. Are. The. Best. Storyteller. Ever. Thank you for putting me in stitches every time.

The banter between Culhwch and The Most High Porter is fantastic XD It reminds me very much of the audiobooks for Pratchett's night watch books! I had myself many a giggle :) I wonder how useful The Most High Porter was in all those exploits with Arthur and his army...

That sums celtic mythology up pretty well, everyone who's exposed to it loves it so why's it not more popular? Because people are too embarrassed to retell it bc of the god damn impossible names

Porter: I shall not let you pass unless... you bring me a shrubbery! Arthur: You can have anything you desire, except my wife? Culwch: Your wife? Arthur: Yeah, she's on a romantic getaway with Lancelot.

Cool! Although in the original versions, it was Mordred who ran off with Gwenhwyfar. Mordred was Arthur's best mate, just like Lancelot.

I'm so excited for this story! Fantastic beginning, even more amazing than I expected. I know at least a bit of this story, (though it is apparent to me now that it is a later part, probably much condensed) due to a song by a absolutely Fantastic artist by the name of Heather Dale. Many of her songs are inspired by & based on Arthurian legend, and it's marvelous stuff! 'Mordred's Lullaby' was the first song of hers I ever heard & I was instantly hooked. I too find it immensely amusing that Arthur is the family hairdresser: Brilliant. The characterization in this one was Excellent, Dael! The old toothless crone, the interaction between Culhwch & his step mother, and them between him & the porter! Splendid! xD

My favourite Daels video (or videos actually, love the fact there a three for this myth). So fun, but finding it (as I like to rewatch it from time to time) is a hilarious nightmare! I've tried every variation of Kulchwih and Ouluen Kulwhich and Aluen Kul... you get the point

I love your one-woman dialogues! They’re something out of “Monty Python.” Thank you for clueing me in on how to pronounce the main character’s name in one of my own webcomics. :) A few years ago I concocted: The Chronicles of Culhwch y Drewllyd (Culhwch the Foul Smelling). It’s about the cowardly warlord of the village Biswail Swp Tyno (Dungheap Dale, at least according to “Google Welsh”). This was based on a Dark Ages tabletop wargame tournament in which I lost every battle, but in an “amazing feat of arms,” snagged next-to-last place. :)

Just realized that when Culhwch's stepmom is telling him that he'll never get a girl until he gets Olwen, that was probably a traditional geas, which did come from Celtic mythology, iirc

This was definitely helpful for me. I'm writing a book about King Arthur and I'm not sure if I'm going to include Culhwch or not, yet, but I needed to know how to pronounce his name. (actually, most, if not all, the names) Even if you got some wrong, it at least gave me a general idea so if I did write the character in and I had to talk about him I don't completely sound like I have no clue what I'm talking about. Thanks again.

Anyone else notice that there's some serious undertones of English-mockery in this story? -King Arthur the hairdresser -The pompous fool at the gate -The absurdly long listing of names (seriously; I picked up a copy of Le Mort D'Artur once, the old Arthur tales do lists like that on the regular. -All the caveats of the promise Arthur makes, because you should never trust an Englishman to make a straight and open promise -The English turn out to actually have no idea who this Olwen person even is. I'm sure there's a couple of examples I missed, but I am still amused.

What is it with ancient epics and listing every last bloody lord and general in excruciating detail? Your voices/acting were absolutely top notch in all of this. I love that as soon as you specify Keyludd? not Keyleth then every other time he becomes Keyleth though :p. The rest seemed pretty good from what little Welsh I know from living there for a few years and being half-Welsh. Not enough challenging ll's though, need to get on that! On the subject of critters though, how caught up are you? Have you been watching lately?

I love stories in the King Arthur universe and am I the only one that has been pondering the future part of the prophesy? Like when do you think England would have needed him most for hi to return and why has no one written a story about it.
@GwladYrHaf
@GwladYrHaf Жыл бұрын
He’s not English, he returns when the Britons need him. The Britons fought against the invaders who would later form the English. It’s a Welsh cultural folktale, different country to the English, different language, different culture, different people. Your confusion is akin to the Apache Geronimo fighting to defend the “USA”.

Dear Welsh language please consider adding some vowels it makes things readable
@michaelsommers2356
@michaelsommers2356 7 жыл бұрын
The trouble is not a lack of vowels, but rather vowels that that look like consonants ('w' and 'y' are vowels), and other vowels that have strange (to non-Welsh speakers) pronunciations. There are also unusual consonant sounds: 'dd' is /th/ as in 'this', 'f' is /v/, 'ff' is /f/ and 'll' is unpronounceable.
