All of those approaches to getting through to MAGA victims are smart. But, even if you can avoid, “speaking down,” to them, you have to keep in mind that you’re likely dealing with someone of a much lower IQ than you. That’s not a jibe, or a quip. It is the GOP strategy. It runs all the way back to McNamara’s Morons from the Vietnam War, and a branch of very deliberate exploitation of those who feel left behind, who are mostly people of lower thinking ability.

Absolutely. The people who raised us instilled in us values that they never actually possessed themselves. Somehow they were able to do enough lip service to the “right thing” that we picked up on it and internalized the actual goodness. I was so surprised to realize that when my family went off the deep end for Trump. I got married in Oct 2016 and had an awesome family honeymoon (my parents, my daughter from my first marriage, his parents and my aunt and her s.o. all went on a cruise together after we got married on the ship) and I’m still angry that one of my most vivid memories of the honeymoon is my dad *screaming* at the taxi driver in Nassau about how he would rather have a “strong” president like Trump and Putin than a Democrat. They’re still in the cult.

The thing that makes the Trump Cult so powerful is the daily indoctrination by Fox et al right wing media. Without it they would eventually pull away. You have to look at different facets of those claiming to be 'true christians'. There are actually fringe far-right white christian nationalists and authoritarian-fascists behind a lot of the original social media posts that are then purposely highly amplified by others. Fear, religion, the previous belief in conspiracy theories and lies, and a restricted infosphere makes one more susceptible to accepting false info. You also have Russia, China, etc. amplifying with their own disinformation and lies with bots, etc. to sow hatred and distrust among the masses in democratic countries. Putin and others are masters at 'brainwashing' and disinformation techniques.
